OK, this is just something I have been playing around with following the various threads on Crabs!

Crab and Dough, The Androsian Way

1. First, catch yourself some crabs, drive the deserted roads of Andros after dark until you see a crab crossing the road. Screech to a halt, jump out and run down the crab!

2. With your trusty flashlight in one hand, pick up the crab. Watch your fingers!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/4.jpg

3. Show off the fact that you have caught your first crab and you are on the way to making an Androsian/Bahamian Specialty

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/1.jpg

4. Put crabs into crab bag, a crocus sack is ideal for the job!

5. When you get home, transfer crabs into your crab pen, a lobster or fish trap is ideal for the job!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/5.jpg

6. Secure the pen so that there are no breakouts!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/6.jpg

7. Feed and water your crabs, to clean them out and make them fat. They like leaves, fruit and coconut

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/7.jpg

8. Happy contented crabs make for the best meal!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/12.jpg

9. After a week or so, remove crabs from pen, they can be feisty so watch yourself as they will try to escape.

10. This one got away , well for a little while at least :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/10.jpg

11. Clip the crabs by breaking off the fins and biters (just don't think about it)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/androsann/Crabs/2055b37b.jpg

12. Put clipped crabs in a bowl ready to carry inside

Stay tuned for part 2!

So... it takes at least a week of feeding to clean out a crab ? if the insides are tar black does this mean the crab was just caught?
What type leaves are good for feeding them, I hear bananna tree leaves are good is this so ?

It is recommended to leave them at least a week before cooking them, you can use any kind of dried leaves but they do like banana leaves and leaves from other fruit bearing trees as well. We usually feed ours watermelons, mangoes, coconut and uncooked rice along with the leaves.

When I was a little girl spending summers on Mangrove Cay, we would use a home made torch to light the way through the back bushes.

My auntie (may she RIP) gave each of use a little kerosene in a soda bottle with a cloth wick. They had no car so we went "crabbin" on foot. Everyone had their own crocus sac.

Auntie would whip you silly if you even thought of catching a crab on Sunday.
I rememeber nights we would catch so much crab we had to put the sacs in the house in a closet so as not to overload the pen and suffocte the crab!

The younger kids had our own special pen so auntie would not think she could sell out our "profit"! BOL!

My brother and I brought home enough crab one summer for my mother to sell to make our school fees and take us to Disney World.

Good times.

Obviously the first thing is that you will have to make sure that they don't clip them (remove the biters and fins) or the crabs won't be able to eat. Then find something, that you can make a small box out of with slatted sides, we used to use old pallets, I have also used an old pet cage at one time especially if you are only going to have a few at a time. Be creative Lotus, anything that has a top, bottom and four sides with a door of some type in the top. Don't forget to give them a flatish container with water in as well.

So they have to keep their claws...I was hoping you would say I could clip 'em.

Ok, I can do it and not loose a finger.

Thanx

What exactly does this cleaning out entail?
How are the insides of a 'cleaned out' crab supposed to look?
