View Full Version : Clean, Green and Pristine!
Great Demos 03-20-05, - 04:51 PM Please give you views on the following proposed developments for the Bahamas. I believe this topic deserves serious attention at this time!
-- The development proposed for Great Guana Cay, Abaco. There was a demonstration here in Nassau last week against this.
-- The LNG Bahamas to Florida pipeline for transporting liquefied natural gas from Grand Bahama to Florida. Seems that this could have terrible consequences for our marine life, etc.
There are at least one other major development planned for Grand Bahama. From all the talk, it seems that most of these could be very bad for our environment and perhaps should not be allowed.
It was reported last year that something went awry with a major developement and the investor pulled out leaving irreparable damages to that particular family island. [Can't recall whether it was Bimini or Exuma].

Iupdate 03-20-05, - 11:03 PM Yeah, I agree, if it can help our economy, then go for it, but I sure do hope that our local authorities are plotting, and asking questions, the tuff and important question. And I hope they are carefully checking the fine prints and dotting the “i’s” and crossing the “t’s” so that when something goes wrong, whatever could go wrong like spills, toxics and poisons are not left floating around our waters and our islands and at our expenses.

Not for sure all that is going on, but If I was yall, I would leave well enough alone. Take a good look at the United States... Very polluted from that very thing. Always wanting to cut down here, drill there, move this and that. Just killing people with toxics and then try to cover it up. There will be a spill, but will they tell and clean up. hmmmmmmm Why risk the beauty of the island for MORE! Sometime less is better. The very thing the U.S. was built on is LOST, in trying to have MORE! ! Trying to out due someone else or other countrys and the pureness of life is gone. Just something to think about.

I have to agree here. How much do the authorities know about oil drilling, the risk to the enviroment, how to deal with oils spills and such. I believe that if something went wrong with the LNG project, folks would be hush hush on the matter to save face, and to save embarrassement, and accountability. We must ensure the natural beauty of our islands, and protect it from potentially dangerous projects like th eLNG project. Once we destroy our coral reefs and kill off our Marine life, we cannnot get reclaim thiose things. These commodities are the very things driving tourists to our islands. Do you think tourist will want to swim in oil drenched waters, with potential toxicity. More importantly us locals can also be threatened. There are other investment ventures that can be made in this country, that would be potentially be less harmful to our enviroment. Mo amount of $$$$ will buy us the natural beauty of our islands.
casualobserver 03-21-05, - 02:46 PM The possibility of an oil 'slick' from an LNG plant is impossible. LNG is only liquified if it is cooled or pressurized to the point where the molecules are so close, they condense into liquid. If there was a rupture of an LNG line, we wouldn't be worrying about a slick as itwould simply regasify as it escaped the pipeline.
The problem is that the bubbles can ignite, creating a 5 mile 'kill zone' if they were to explode! Anyone in the area would be vapourized, so there's no one to complain!

I agree with this and I agree with Grown & Sexy. Imagine how many lives could be lost if a couple mail boats or a large cruise liner happen to be crossing that pipeline and it happens to explode!
For some reason government seems to be gung ho on these types of developments, and I don't think they are taking all the necessary precautions. You know how they like to wait a long time until everybody forgets and then BAM! -- they suddenly spring the thing on us and the development starts! And in the future if the thing turns into a diaster, we all would suffer!
Don't forget the proposed development for Clifton Cay under the FNM. After careful studies and examination, the scientists the government hired advised them that it was very wrong to allow that kind of developement on that site! In their judgment, everything about that develpoment was terrible.
The government got angry with them and put them on the stop list! [I think this happened, not 100% sure, maybe someone can help me here]. In spiite of all this and the demonstrations and public disapproval of it, the govenment was still very dertermined to push this developement on us! And if they have already made at least two blunders before, what is there to stop them from making more!?
I for one would not like to see future generations of our children and grand children talking and reading about the good fish that their parents used to enjoy, and the good beaches and waters, etc, but these privileges are no longer availablle to them because of some government blunder! NO, I'd rather be "poor" and healthy than to be wealthy and sick!
Iupdate 03-21-05, - 09:58 PM I agree with everything you guys are saying here and I for one would not lie to see this go on if there is any chance of danger or where the consequences out ways the investment. Then I say scratch it. Yes, America is made out of a mountain of disasters, but they do not depend on us nearly as much as we on them. I for one do not trust the Americans and you all already know this, they are usually looking out for themselves, the interest of their own country, I prefer that we are not mixed up in their plotting.
Now, if we continue to oppose this or operations such as this then this means we prefer to keep our country under lock and key. As for now we are not doing much of anything with this country. If we are doing nothing with it eventually it will be taken away form us anyway, either by foreign investors, foreign exiles, or foreign invasion and this will happen when we are more vulnerable and most dependent.
We have tourism, yes, but how long will tourism hold us, how long are we willing to hold on to this single resource? Sooner or later we must move to something other. I say this is at least worth a study, if it is unsafe, then yes I agree scratch it. No one want an explosion or toxic and muddy waters, but if the possibilities of development and economical progress exist for this country and the people of this country, then, yes risk is what we must be willing to take, and we must do this eventually sooner rather than later.

I hear what you are saying and totally understand, but Why does everything have to be bigger & more advance. What is wrong with simplicity? Why do you think tourtist are running there....NOt just for the beautiful beaches, food and hotels...........Tourtist comes to Bahamas for the simple life. The hustle and bustle of everyday life it wearing people out.
My family grew up on a farm, living the slow life...not short of the nice things in life...just slow living....Then everyone thought it would be better to get food from the BIGGER Farmers...NOW you have people getting sick for all the chemical and no has the time for nature to grow on its own. MY point is we sure have just kept it simple. Stop trying to compete in every aspect of life.
As far as being independent, find other ways! Dont Detroy the beauty of The Bahamas, the peace, the beautiful sights that God has created.
Next thing you know, yall will be have a train system....lol
Keep thing slow...work on the other issues that is occuring! !

Well said. But note, I have not at all taken one side to this issue. I am not at all suggesting that we go for this pipe line with close eyes, but rather study it and if it seems risky enough then by all means, scratch it. I am not at all saying go for it regardless, no, I am not saying this not at all. But what I am saying is that we can not keep this country under lock and key forever, neither should we continue to allow ourselves to be confined to a single major industry. Yes, there are more environmentally safer industries where the risk may be lower and it is those industries that we must also be willing to explore.
Great Demos 06-28-05, - 06:16 AM Has anyone seen Keod Smith on the news last night? I like the stance he's taken on the LNG pipeline. As it stands now he's not in favour of it because there are too many unknowns: How will it benefit the Bahamas? How dangerous is it? Who will help us to guard it and make it safe for our waters, etc? If it messes up our environment, how will this be remedied and who will compensate us? The list goes on!
To me, this shows great statesmanship on Mr Smith's part, standing up for the best for his country and going out on a limb perhaps against the sentiments of the majority of his party! I commend him for this and add his name to the very few in the PLP for whom I have any respect!
I just hope and pray his party sees the wisdom in his stance and doesn't try to destroy him politically!
I also hope that calmer heads look seriously at the other major developments with a view NOT to develop our great country out of existence!
