thanks, i'm thinking of really going for it because I've been thinking about it for the last year seriously. Quick question, if I live there for eight months I still have to go thru the immigration process? I thought you could live there pretty much for eight months without going thru that process.

I have been told when you enter you can get a 3 months stamp in your passport, if you wish the 8 months, you need to apply for the visa and show the ability to support yourself.

I came here in Jan 2002, forgot to leave ... BOL ... Just kidding

i for got to ask what is it that you love about the bahamas also which iland was you thinking of moving to?

to be honest like i said if you have a friend turn on your utilities, and take care of your car registration and all that and you have enough money for the time you wanna stay in the bahamas you can skip the vacation process.

your biggest problem would be working

I've visited Nassau for the six times and I went to Freeport once. I love Nassau and want to stay there. I just left there 2 weeks ago. To be honest I love everything, the people, the food, the scenery, the laid back lifestyle. I do realize I was on vacation so that my state of mind could be a little different. The last couple of times I came, we rented a condo so we did go to the grocery stores, caught the bus and even went to a party in Foxhill twice. So I kind of have a small clue on the not so tourist point of view.
When I was looking online at some of the apartments, some of them had utilities included and this was $1100/month including utilites so I felt that was an awsome deal. I do know a couple of guys down there, but I don't know if I would be comfortable asking them to do this for me because I don't want any strings attached. I'm pretty sure I'm not bringing a car nor will I purchase one there for just a year. I want to stay somewhere that I will have access to the bus or is called "jitney"? It won't be economical for me to go thru the car process and I'm only planning on staying a year. I plan on coming back down in Sept. to check out a couple of places that I did find online.
Like I said, I'm using some of my saved money and I'm by no means rich, but I feel people pay for what they want and what's important to them, so I'm making the ultimate sacrafice and making this happen. Life is short, play hard.

I'm thinking of moving to the Bahamas within the next few months, but only temporarily, maybe 1 year or so. I currently live in Houston Texas and have visited Nassau for the last 7 years every year. So I have a pretty good idea of the Bahamian lifestyle. I am single, no kids, 32 yr old female. I have some money saved so I'm exploring the option of perhaps not working, but living on my saved funds, however I feel I would be more comfortably financially if I could find a job of some sort. How much money do you think I would need to live comfortably with my rental being approx $1100 per month? I believe I can stay for 8 months without having to get residency or go thru any immigration if I read correctly. What are some of the challenges I may face staying there?

Hey TX Gal, I have a similar scenario to you. I have wanted to move somewhere in the Caribbean for the past few years now but was actually looking into Jamaica or perhaps even US Virgin Islands. After visiting Nassau I figured maybe I could settle here. Of course I would pick a place with a hard immigration process. Unlike the rich expats that enjoy a vacation lifestyle there in Nassau, I work for a living here in the states and would expect to do the same anywhere I lived. I didn't finish more than an Associates degree and actually work in the beauty industry and so I dont even know if either of those would mean much there. Let me know what you find out about the moving experience be it long term or short for Americans. Im curious to see what you find out.
