I'm thinking of moving to the Bahamas within the next few months, but only temporarily, maybe 1 year or so. I currently live in Houston Texas and have visited Nassau for the last 7 years every year. So I have a pretty good idea of the Bahamian lifestyle. I am single, no kids, 32 yr old female. I have some money saved so I'm exploring the option of perhaps not working, but living on my saved funds, however I feel I would be more comfortably financially if I could find a job of some sort. How much money do you think I would need to live comfortably with my rental being approx $1100 per month? I believe I can stay for 8 months without having to get residency or go thru any immigration if I read correctly. What are some of the challenges I may face staying there?

You cannot engage in gainful occupation without the permission of Immigration..(Unless you are a citizen of the Bahamas!) Obtaining a work permit is not an overnight process and you will not be allowed to apply for the permit; the employer applies.
Bahamians and most persons living here don't enjoy the vacation lifestyle...You would have to live with (for longer than a few weeks) someone who lives a realistic (job, commitments) life to understand Bahamian lifestyle! As for living expenses...Rent, electricity (HIGH!), food ( a lot more than US due to our tax system)...Hopefully you have a lot saved!!!

I wasn't gern into all dem details...I've lived here long enough to have seen sooo many cases similar to this... vacation here and think how lucky we are to live here! (YES WE ARE, BUT NOT FOR THE REASONS TOURISTS THINK!) In many cases the gals are wined and dined and partied constantly...money can't done...so the gal moves here (sometimes marries locally) and reality sets in! Can't work, Bahamians don't go snorkeling or to the beach every day, the parties become few and far between, eating out becomes cooking at home, left home to be bored out of the mind! Some of the women I know have stayed and stuck it out, but not all can handle it! Vacation is not reality!

r all these people the same person talking bout they movin to bahamas?

well tx gal the truth is when it comes to immigration the bahamas isnt like the usa.

no light shall be turned on in thy house unless you can prove legal residence.

same for the phone, water, cable, and internet.

however you can get around this if you have a bahamian friend who would turn those bills on for you.

then there is the issue of a car a friend would have to register, license, and insure it for you as well.

in terms of rent to you spot a place yet.

generally an american wont be comfortable living anywhere else in nassau besides east or west. that is unless they are just down to earth or use to ghettos.

groceries are expensive, like post cereal? get ready to spend 6 bucks for a box of that sweet tempting honey bunches of oats.

the americans brits and canadians and rest who live in the bahamas live cofortably becuase they work for banks, embassies, construction companies get paid lots and lots of money and on top of that get free living expenses so to them bahamas is truely paridise.

i say if its truely your dream go for it!

I am Bahamaian and I live in Houston, Texas.

Before you move please get a realistic idea of the increase in your living expenses and the rigirous immigration process.
