They aren't actually non Bahamians...but actually the new Bahamians. The ones who does still plait straw and carve. The ones who live that primitive island life that some tourist expect us to live. The ones who does sell peas and corn on the side of the road and lift them heavy sticks on top of they head. They aint non Bahamians, but a blast to the past representation of an old time Bahamian.

Plus these strawvendors are sheep and have traditionally been sheep for years. they waiting on they sheppard to tell them what to do.

hmmm, I guess you couldn't find no local place to take your friends that was good besides Atlantis. This says a lot.

Nevertheless, I am assuming you encounter the Haitian immigrants who work over there who don't speak english; man you should know better than to ask them for directions. Usually its obvious as to who one should ask for help and whom one should ignore and acknowledge as the help.

The problem is not the straw vendors. The problem is our government and their nonchalant approach to solving social problems.
This continuing issue regarding the vendors is easily solved. Build a new straw market with good ventilation. It ga take about two years to build. Remember they aint start yet...lol. So them vendors ga have a long long time in that heated tent if they dont willingly move cross the street. After it build, start charging rent; That ga limit who there and the over crowding; Then establish an entity to manage the building. As we all know our government can't manage shipt properly. Then enforce the law. No foreign items. No fake stuff. No hirering illegal immigrants. And this ga be hard, since even the shirts they sell is foreign, and some of the trickets that tourist flock to buy is foreign made. We as Bahamians must understand what exactly is our tourism product. The Ministry of Tourism know, that is why they quiet. But nonetheless, the conclusion is, our government just don't care about straw. Straw just finish in the Bahamas it seems. We just need to face reality.
Right On , Right On:bouncy:

I would not cry if the straw market gets disbanded all together.....I say let the private sector mostly the hotels create commercial space for the serious traders of Bahamian craft and souvenirs.

But if the government is going to do something for them (alas) then lets just do it already. This issue has no right trumping serious national problems that are trully affecting people in more ways than one.

I empathize with your opinion that private sectors should create commerical space for Bahamian craft and souvenir vendors. Perhaps this is the direction we must go. This clearly will slove a lot of issues. Atlantis already has theirs, in fact, they encourage all of their guests to patronize the one on PI and not to venture down town. Simply put, Down town is a dump and everything you would want to purchase is right over PI. A sad truth.

However, we must now ask the question of whether the government has a duty to the vendors down town. Are they owed a space. Are they important to the tourism product. With the 'disbandment' of the straw market do government have a duty to assist these people. Personally, I do not believe it is right for government to be providing free space for anyone. But I am frustrated with the fact that government is playing with these people's emotions.

I like that.
There is nothing wrong with a flea market. In fact, we have millions of tourist who flock to the Bahamas just to walk through that flea market to buy them fake gucci that they can't get in the states openly. The Bahamas is renown for our good quality fake merchandise. We get high marks on ebay.
