Until the philosophy which hold one race superior
And another
Inferior
Is finally
And permanently
Discredited
And abandoned -
Everywhere is war -
Me say war.

That until there no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes -
Me say war.

That until the basic human rights
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race -
Dis a war.

Marichal, I'll say one thing (now this is only my opinion and it is possible I could be wrong), but I honestly believe that if when the first PLP came to power in 1967, IF they had stuck to their original philosophy, this Bahamas would have been a heaven on earth. I don't know about the rest of the world, etc, but I honestly believe it was quite possible for those "original" leaders to have wiped out racism to the extent that we would have been practically colour blind!

I mean, all the people over the hill were so happy that night when the vote was split evenly between the PLP and the UBP -- I got out of my bed at about 2 or 3 in the morning and went out partying, something I have NEVER done before or since!

But after the first 4 or 5 years, the old PLP just started to become uncaring and perhaps a bit corrupt. They started to preach race hatred seriously, and hence the mess we find ourselves in today.

Great demos, I totally agree with you. After the Progressive Liberal Party won the government they became very hypocritical on the race issue. On one hand the PLP painted our white brothers as the bogeyman and on the other hand accepted money and favors from these seem people. There sons and daughters were given jobs at these so call ‘bay street boys’ firm and businesses while the PLP politicians ascended there political platforms and call these seem people everything except a child of God. The PLP did a disservice to the Bahamas by using the race card to win elections. It is my belief that had the PLP made genuine efforts to heal the bitter past and reconcile with our white brothers, the Bahamas would have become a racial paradise. We are doing much better today thanks in part to the Right Honorable Hubert Alexander Ingraham and the FNM government.

Well CG...I think I see one...but don't know if he will be given the chance he deserves. I have always thought to myself that we do not need Lawyers or Religious people leading the country.......what we need is a businessman.... I agree 100% people have their opinions but rationally we all should agree that this is true.......

In conclusion....that person is Brent Symonette. Might be a business man but he was given a start un like anyone in the Bahamas. He knows nothing of having to choose to do this thing or that and if what he chooses fails he won't feed his family for a week because of limited money. You need business people that know what failure is know what it is to work with limits, one that knows how to work around problems.

Thanks pharoah. I agree with what you are saying also. Ping them were telling us the whites were no good, but every business the whites opened they were right there doing the honours in the official opening!

For the life of me, I could never understand why they played that race card so strongly (or at all!). I mean, even right now you will find decent intelligent black men still thinking that the whites don't mean them any good, the whites are keeping them down, etc. Like Ping and his gang just burned that foolishness on their brain forever!

Seems that many also got caught up in party loyalty to the extent that even when the party did very wrong things they were blind to it! I mysellf will never be too loyal to ANY political party!

I am too young to remember, but I was told by mother and older sister, that the movie "roots" was played every election period under the rule of Sir Lynden. I guess just a friendly reminder before dese people (Black Bahamians) forget and catch some sense.

Your Mother and sister were right. "Roots" was played before just about every election. "Roots" was a great book and movie. I enjoyed it. Shame it was used as propaganda.

How was it used as propaganda.Because I saw roots & in noway would it cause me to vote PLP,I'm wondering if you are implying that the average Bahamian voter is just ignorant.

Easily swayed by emotion, perhaps, but not ignorant. The very fact that it did not "work" after a while shows that the voters saw through it.

"Roots" was used as race propaganda. "Look what the White man will do if us PLP ain't here" was the clear message that some Black friends told me they saw. I did not see it myself, it was just a darn good movie.
