View Full Version : Nassau Guardian's Website
garnelleo 03-28-05, - 08:42 PM Have you ever noticed the The Nassau Guardian's site (http://thenassauguardian.com).
I have been noticing some things lately
1. It was not compatible with Firefox, and magnified the text to like a 72 point font :realmad: but now it is regular :dancer2: .
2. They changed the layout, and the color scheme, although i'm not so sure that it looks that good now.
3. At first I thought that that was a Colina Ad but i just remembered that they are a subsidary of Colina. Then I wondered to myself, since they are a newspaper and their main source of revenue is ads why dont they put some on their site, particularly Adsense ads. Low and behold, boom right there Adsense ads.
4. I like the online archive, great for research, which I am a fan of.
garnelleo 03-28-05, - 09:07 PM and not only that, they as a company with a website you are presenting yourself to the world. The great thing about the web is that no one has to know how big you are.
Many companies on the net are small garage, dorm, or apartment companies, but you would not know that by their website.
But, atleast they have a website, does the Trib have one?
garnelleo 03-28-05, - 09:26 PM I like Bahamas b2b
I check out the Guardian when I dont have 50 cents for the paper.
Maybe its me and several persons on this board who are from an IT background may agree, but I feel that all well known businesses should have a website. We are in the 21st century, the Information Age, and not to beat up the Trib or nuttin, but you are missing out on a huge market without a webpage.
There are students at school who want to catch up on the news, there are researchers roun' the globe who want to get more info on wats going on, there are us who want to read the news when checkin email in the morning (boy how times have changed) etc etc etc.
I'm glad how banks are getting online banking, COB with online classes, and ZNS with online radio and tv feeds. But more persons need to jump on the Internet bandwagon, globalization is here, and the Bahamas supposedly wants ECommerce to become a third pillar of the economy, therefore improvements must continue.
I'm thinking of teaming up with some fellow CIS majors and start doing webpages.
garnelleo 03-28-05, - 09:54 PM Customs duty doesnt make it any easier
Customs is another story.
noone can find an excuse not to have a web site. Especially as now there is software like, yes, Front page, Visual Interdev, etc, that does it all for you
And your right it doesnt take much to do a website. Wanna get one off the ground fast, go buy a template or have one custom made. I was checkin prices for my dad on building supplies, and some of these companies with the amount of money they have didnt have websites. and the ones with sites were crappy. Broken links, login pages that made no sense, and more broken links.
Email is the biggest downfall, too many people here with businesses, and large ones I might add, dont have email, and if they do, they only check it once a month, which is useless.
Speaking about no replying to email. Shoots thats a problem with fortune 500 companies. Either i need a secret password or they have their spam setting to filter emails with the word "the". A few times i emailed a comany as large as Microsoft and have gotten no respnses or automated answers. I once emailed the PUC asking about Voip and its legality and u think they replied?
Thirdly i cringe when I hear rather large companies say "you can email us at mycompany@hotmail/yahoo/msn.com" yuck yuck. Presentation is one of the most important thinkgs when it comes to the WWW.
Triple X is still the biggest legal profit making industry on the internet today, as it has been for many years.
YOu seem to be bery bery interested in the Adult entertainment industry.
garnelleo 03-28-05, - 10:14 PM sorry im little lost on the email question. But to answer your query I primarily use my Gmail account (webmail service by Google with 1gb of storage for u who dont know).
And GMail has helped push Yahoo and Microsoft to increase storage. after gmail came with 1gb, yahoo responded with 100mb, then 250mb, and now 1gb, and Hotmail as increased to 250mb. Competition for ya.
I have no problem with Hotmail, or Yahoo, in fact i used Yahoo b4 i joined the craze and tried Gmail. Now its my primary email, and I used it to back up files and stuff. All of my school work, ebooks, and important files are on another account. Sorry if i sound like a Google spokesperson but I'm a fan of their services. I hope that answered your question.

Crazycoyo 04-01-05, - 01:33 PM Lol i was wondering why text was so big in firefox on guardian site :mad:
hey does the Punch have website
garnelleo 04-01-05, - 03:32 PM Do you want to know why it appeared that way.
bad html.
There are good ways and then not so good ways to code html. That is why the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has placed guidlines on HTML and has a validator that checks your site's HTML.
This is also why the W3C has recommended XHTML 1.0 as a successor to HTML 4.01. XHTML is more strict, produces better code, displays web sites better on capable browsers and is better for mobiile devices as well.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 04-01-05, - 05:15 PM speaking of firefox, has anyone configured it to load pages even faster? i noticed a marked difference.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 04-01-05, - 08:08 PM well i like my pretty images too much for that :D i was meaning this:
Use FiREFOX for internet. Its much secure and much faster. But add this trick to it.
Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:
Type "about:config" into the address bar, hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
* Right-click any row, then click New, Integer. Type or paste the following preference name into the dialog box that appears (this is a hidden preference that doesn't exist in the Configuration Console until you create it):
browser.cache.memory.capacity
Click OK, then enter the following integer number into the next dialog box, representing 16 MB of RAM for the cache: 16000
Click OK to close the dialog box, then close all instances of Firefox and restart it.
* Type "about:config" into the address bar, hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
*
Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
*
Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.
If you're using a broadband connection you'll load 2 times faster.
user_pref("network.http.max-connections", 32);
user_pref("network.http.max-connections-per-server", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy", 8);
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4);
garnelleo 04-01-05, - 09:32 PM well i like my pretty images too much for that :D i was meaning this:
i did that that night when i was up doin my vb and yea it works.
casualobserver 04-13-05, - 01:02 PM The Guardian just take cue from the Bahama Journal. Their website is so much more superior in quality and content, and they have pictures!!!!
A little photojournalism course would to both Bahama Journal and the Guardian some good. Many times the pictures are taken too far away. Even more times, two or more pictures would be better than one.
eg. The concept art for the new Baha Mar development. I'd love to be able to see what they're planning on a picture larger than a postage stamp!
But I do agree that BJ and B2B are the better portals to visit.
Why doesn't The Punch have a website? Tabloid or not, they have pictures and news too.
