think about it, though ... recent newspaper article showed that 25% of all bahamians now have one of their children born in the u.s., so as to take advantage of lower medical costs, education costs, etc.

what's the difference, immigration-wise, in a diversified economy? i am pretty tired of bahamians not calling a spade a spade here, and recognizing that the haitian situation here is one of our own making. so, we have paid them like peasants for the past 50 years instead of recognizing their historical contributions to this country and part of the world ... now the chickens are coming home to roost!

wow...that many Bahamian women leave the Bahamas in order to have their children in the United States. That number seems to be too high...
Nevertheless, the situation is still not the same....the Bahamian woman returns home with their new Bahamian baby, and grow them up here. There is limited expense of the U.S. Government....

Bahamians Beware!
Illegal immigration is a cancer that will devour your nation!
Haiti or any other land where poverty and the prospect of no future are all people have to look forward to are ALWAYS going to leave that desolation for somewhere better and they will do ANYTHING to
1) get there
2) find work
and
3) stay there
They will not hesitate to enter illegally, once in your beautiful country they will work at rates so low as to displace Bahamain workers and employers will use them without question.. their culture is not in any way compatible with yours, nor do they want it to be they could care less for your heritage and traditions and will work to subvert all you have worked so hard for and hold dear.
Please act now before they gain the politicos ears as we know most politicans are gutless wonders and will either ignore a problem till its too late or tell you that somehow you are at fault !

Hey Great Demos,
In the Christian faith, we are being taught that any other religion other than Christianity is the wrong religion. Consequently, all the Jews, Hindi, Budahs, and of course the Voodoo men are going to hell....

If a country fails, or not, is not based on religion. It is based on how well the people obey the laws of the land and how well those laws are executed. If the Bahamas fails due to a large immigration of illegal peoples it will be because of our, the peoples, willingness to hire illegals in contradiction of the law. It will also be the fault of the Governing powers who do not enforce the law.

God, or Gods, by the truck load, have no baring on that! We should not be looking to God, but to ourselves.

exactly CG. it never fails to amuse me when i hear the older people talk about the haitians taking over..then five minutes later they are looking for one to mow their lawn or some other manual labour. my old man is a RBDF petty officer so i guess that's why everything that had to be done around the house/yard was done within the family.

as i have said before. haitians have their place in our society butwe still have to control, and regulate. there will always be a need for haitian labour, which has far exceeded just yard cleaning.

I agree that there is a need for labour regardless of nationality. but people shouldnt start making noise when the job is done and they deicide to apply for status.

The way I see it whenever discussions come around for F.T.A.A, if the Immigration situation continues TO BE THE SAME we need not sign onto the Free Movement of People area because WE ALREADY HAVE THAT!!!!!! :dgi:

u better believe it

i agreee, however, u still cannot give status to everyone. udo u realise that the labourers from the citrus farm.they r not sending them back, right now they say.which to me makes no sense says alfred gray,we have to check their status.well blow me away i thought once that farm closed and thats the only reason why u are in this country then u need to be deported. its as simple as that or so i thought

Does it strike you as odd that we tell the Illegal Immigrants not to come here. Yet, when they do, they are given free health care, free education for their children. There is a whole host of jobs for them to choose from and a whole host of Bahamians who will hire them, illegally. Many "squat" on land that is not theirs, illegally tap into electricity, water, etc. and the worse thing that happens to them if they are caught is that they are sent back to the land of their origin - many simply get back here on the next available boat, and why not? For them the "streets are paved with Gold."

My solution is brutal, I know that but the problem has become a cancer that must be cut out with brutal surgery before the whole body dies. Here is what I propose.

For Bahamian who hire illegal workers:
It is obvious that the fines we have are not a deterrent. We need new fines. On the first offence the employer is fined twice the yearly wage he would have paid the illegal worker. On the second offence he is charged five times the wage. On the third offence his business, or home, is confiscated to the state. Are the fines too high? Don't forget, these employers are contributing to the problem. It is because of them that people take a risk to their life and limb to get here. Perhaps by risking the loss one's home or business it would make it too risky to hire illegal workers. This in itself might stop the flow of illegals as there would be no work for them.

Now, I know the objection. "We need a percentage of non-Bahamian workers." Yes, we do. My solution to that would be to stream-line the Immigration Dept. so that such person could be brought in quickly. The fees for such people could be lowered. They would have an I.D. card that they would have to carry at all times. We would know where they were and what they were doing all the time! The object is not to stop immigration but to stop illegal immigration. The Immigration Dept would have to have a complete make-over to make this work.

The second part is strong, but again, the surgery needs to be done. We are dealing here with a cancer, not the common cold. As things stand now, one has to prove one is a Bahamian, or legal worker, to open a bank account. The same thing should hold true for free medical treatment and education. That is harsh! Particularly the medical treatment, I know that. But when we hand out free stuff to illegals they take it! Why not? So would most of us.It is just one more thing that make the Bahamas a great place for illegals to live! And don't forget, it is us, the Bahamian, and the legal worker, who pay for these services so that they are there when we need them. As things stand now, those services are in doubt and in short supply for us who pay for them.

Squatting on land, and stealing public services is a crime. Such people should be brought before the courts and justice should be allowed to takes its course. I should also point out that when someone steals a public service, like Electricity, some else has to pay for that loss - guess who pays!

Illegals who are deported and return would be subject to a ten year sentence in Fox Hill. They would not just sit in the jail and get three meals a day. They would be put to work, cleaning our parks etc.

As things stand now, the Bahamas is an attractive place for the illegals. Lots of free stuff, little risk of being caught and a revolving door if one is caught. No wonder we have a problem!

What a load of RUBBISH!. Please type in Haiti in a google search and then maybe you'll be able to find out why these people are leaving in droves. Haiti is HELL ON EARTH, kids are dying due to lack of food and disease, crime is everywhere, there is no law and order. Believe Haiti is a beautiful country its got mountains which touch the sky and beautiful beaches, unfortunately it doesn't have the economy Bahamas enjoys. So please step down from your high horse and overstand where these DESPERATE people are coming from and also EDUCATE yourself on Haitian history and politics, you'd be surprised what you'd find, only the ignorant would blame it on voodoo. Further, less face it you pobably got Haitian blood in you anyway, boy your foerparents would be turning in their grave. Also why you're at it ask the thousands of Bahamians in North America to come home and help fix up the Bahamas

Enough of the hate people! "free yourself from mental slavery"

Wow, your back, thought you relinquished your citizenship. Anyway, I dont think anyone is intending to be insensitive to the plight of the Haitian people. In fact I for one would love to see stability and economic life in Haiti, and that is key to aleving their plight. The Bahamas is a small country that simply cannot absorb the thousands of Haitians that flee their homeland every year, we simply would stagger under the weight economically and socially. Also the law must be upheld when it comes to any illegal immigrant regardless of nationality. Every country inclusive of the Bahamas has the right to protect their borders and police it. Try entering any other country illegaly and see what happens. I also believe any other country particularly in the Caribbean would deport illegal immigrants just as we do, so why are all the fingers pointed to us and us alone? The best thing the Bahamas can do is to work in alliance with other regional countries and the US, to restore democracy to Haiti, and allow them to stand on their own two feet, cause we cant continue to pick up the tab. You call it arrogance because we want to get our immigration situation under control, then I guess every country on earth is arrogant. BTW how many illegal immigrants are you willing to house, feed, and educate,oh dont forget about their kids as well?

Yet another person who is riding the "Bahamians dont want Haitians in the country cause they hate them" bus.

It has to be drilled into the heads of persons like this that:

- The Bahamas is a nation of only 300,000 people. We are not the US or some other large nation that can afford to absorb 4000+ illegal immigrants each year.

- No one can reasonably deny that Haiti is in a mess. It does not, however, in any way excuse leaving Haiti to enter another country ILLEGALLY. If in some way this gives them an excuse, then why does every country have borders? Let's have free movement of people into The Bahamas and make this country a "second Haiti", shall we?

- The Bahamas is struggling to manage its own population. We have over the years managed to maintain our delicate, yet stable economy, but now we have come to the realization that the free services that illegal immigrants take advantage of are slowly adding to expenses we cannot afford.

- Right now many Bahamians do not educate themselves on their own Bahamian history, so if this immgiration trend continues we will eventually have a persons who will be birthright citizens of this nation, but with loyalty to a foreign flag and a foreign tongue. Learning about the history of another nation is good, but at the expense of drowning your own, I would think not.

- One thing that I admire is how the immigrant population sticks together when they arrive here in The Bahamas. It concerns me though, for these are the type of persons who need to be in Haiti to help rebuild that nation. If all of the "industrious" people leave a country, who will be left to lead it?

- We have Haitian Bahamian leaders who say that they have only just begun to discourage Haitians from coming to The Bahamas, not because of the damage that is being done to the country, but because Bahamians have finally figured out what exactly was going on in terms of the illegal immigrant situation and are starting to get tired of their country being exploited. Where does these Haitian Bahamian leaders' loyalty lie?

This is a delicate situation that involves EVERY entity in this country, foreign or domestic. Bahamians are willing to help our Haitian brothers and sisters, but not to our own detriment. The same way that many of you wouldn't give money to someone who seems perfectly capable to help themselves out of a difficult situation is the same way we need to put our foot down at giving away our country to persons who are abandoning theirs.
