Let me vent!

About a month ago I put an urgent matter in my lawyer's hands, in the form of documents that needed his attention.

A week passed and I did not hear from him, not even that he had even received the documents. I called his office. “I am sorry, Mr........ has gone on vacation. He will not be back for two weeks.” When I asked why I was not told this when I dropped the documents off, I got the “I ain’t know” answer that should really be our national saying.

I was mad but I asked if another lawyer in the firm (a large firm) could handle the matter. I spoke with the new chap and told him that the matter was urgent and could he handle it at once. He said he could.

Another week passed , no word, so I called “Mr......... has gone on vacation. He will not be back for two weeks!” I blew my stack!!!! (Something I seldom do!)

I don’t believe lawyers should go on vacation, not for the money they charge us. If they do go they should make sure that every client is covered before they go. I have dealt with lawyers all over the world. Urgent is urgent and they seem to understand the meaning of the word. Bahamian lawyers do not, or so it seems.

If they have the nerve to send me a bill for their lack of action, I am going to have some one call them and say “Mr. CG has gone on vacation and will not be back for two years!” lol!

Chile CG looks like your definition of urgent and his differs.Guess he figured he had to take a lil vacation to attend to your urgent matter. There are more lawyers in this country than you can shake a stick at.You need to find another lawyer if this mr on vacation treating you like this.

I work for a lawyer who just went on a two week vacation, leaving his staff completely useless.

We are not allowed to open mail or correspond with clients even though for the most part we know what we're doing.

We would never commit to something we know not to be true or not sure of but surely we know to ask for documents, send documents to be signed, closing statements, etc...but we are here twiddling our thumbs being yelled at.

I would venture to say that you and your colleagues likely know more than the lawyers! (At least on to treat people.) :)

I just might do that! But “shopping for a lawyer” is like using a match to see if there is any gas in the tank! (A dangerous thing to do) You never know when it blow up in your face - or the new lawyer walk away with your money - something that has happened here a lot. Sometimes the devil you know is better that the devil you do not.

We are just a slack set of people, who have our own definition of professionalism. It seems when Bahamians go on vacation, nothing else matters. Its as though the world is supposed to stop or something.

You know good and well da only-est ting we care 'bout when way-ca-shun time reach is da price of da Mickey Mouse ears, if da Holiday Inn on Independence Drive gat a kitchenette fa gradmudder mornin tea and if we could get da weekly sales flyers early ta mark of da items we 'need' fa when we get back ta Walmart in My-yam-mee.

That is for sure.

I seldom go on vacation, my life is a vacation (except when I have to deal with lawyers) but when I do go I make sure all the bases are covered. Any of my clients that might need something know when I will be away and when I will be coming back - in advance.

I find generally that the big firms could care less about dealing with "small/trivial matters"! They know they have big companies etc on retainer and in their company/corporate area they make lots of money just from annual fees etc!

There was on large firm where the partner responsible for mortgages took two months to get documents out!

So one day I decided to try a young lawyer who had just formed a firm and I had mortgage docs in two weeks!

They have also lost the ability to see that there are no small, trivial matters to the client. If they don’t want the work, don’t take it but don’t say “yes” when they really mean “maybe.”

I normally ask them how busy they are and "threaten" to send the instructions elsewhere if I son't have results in 10 working days!

Don't get me started on building contractors.

My hubby bought 10 acres of land over 4 1/2 years ago and he is yet to get the ORIGINAL conveyance. The white lady on Dowdswell Ave is never in office.
