View Full Version : PM Says No Immediate Solution To Crime
Da Educator 07-30-08, - 12:06 AM My party I have no allegiance to any party, I was critical of the other Administration as well just not via this blog because I was not a member at the time. Also I am not sayin that bahamians are not smart enough to see that crime is not pinned on any Gov't , that never came to question for me.
mafia princess 07-30-08, - 12:11 AM Seriously! How can the government stop crime? List 10 things that Prime Minister Ingraham and his cabinet can do to stop crime and I'll email the list to him!
Where are the brillant minds in the gov??whre are the new ideas for crime other than cars and more officers..any old rogue from downtown or bain town could list ten..we have a parliament filled lazy "we'll do it the same ole way but just throw something new in there" mp's
Da Educator 07-30-08, - 12:12 AM What I think it really boils down to is enforcement of the Laws. If you say for instance, that the penalty for running the light is $200.00 dollars I expect if I run the traffic light that i'm gonna pay the penalty of $200.00 dollars or suffer the strictest punishment allocated by the law of the land. So what i'm trying to say is we are poor enforcers of the Law of the land and if we are to truly but a stop or control the scourge of crime we have to be seen by society as full enforcers of the law even if they are petty crimes. We have to put the perception out there for those who are thinking of committing crimes that NO act of crime will be tolerated. In our society today no one is serious that they are going to feel the full blunt of the law if they commit a crime, not even murders. So it has to be strict enforcement of the laws across the board.

We can surely start with seeminly PETTY crime: open cussin', drinkin', foul music on the airwaves/buses/open spaces....
It is DISGUSTING to see & hear especially "professional, etc." ppl. who seem to have NO self-control or respec' and think its "CUTE"... IT IS NOT OKAY!!!

All da way ta da HOA. . .right on target kind sir!!!!
Da Educator 07-30-08, - 01:08 AM Yes , It must be stern enforcement of the laws , even petty ones such as those which " The Point" so eloquently points out.
asterz57 07-30-08, - 01:16 AM We have ourselves to BLAME for this crime issue...The country is too slack, nothing is fully enforced, there is too much of that "who you know" will get you off attitude going on...Government officals and officers of the law need to seperate their job duties from their personal lives..This country is down to the dogs lets face it ..everyone does what they feel like with no regard for the law
When we as a country can get past the "its who you know" thing then we can move forward. Once you have money, status and know somebody in this country a person can get off with murder. As small as this country is and the fact that everybody know somebody who know somebody crime shouldnt be this high.
It all falls on the Government to realize that they have to try something new to combat it somewhat. They need to move them bunch of ol heads in the Police Force and bring in fresh people with ideas for the 21st century. Too much corruption plaguing the Force and they need to clean it out. Too many people have rank and can hardly read and write.
We gat plenty work to do in this country and everyone just playing the blame game. We just need to adapt a ZERO TOLERANCE for crime. Hang dem suckas who on death row and start trying cases like today and stop having people on remand for three years before their case is heard.

I'd drink to that , It is unfortunate. The irony of law enforcement in this country is that when it is carried out or attempted to be carried out, those who are the perpetrators always find persons who are in authority or have influence to help bail them out. This is most upsetting and ILLEGAL in my belief. How can there be any real punishment or justice when there are so many corrupt and untruthful personalities working in our institutions. We need a clean sweep. How do we determine that? One way is to not put in place corrupt people to do the sweep you will find that they will move the corrupt ones already there and just replace them with their own. We need to do proper screening and security vetting when it comes down to selecting personnel to work in our institutions that deal directly with the criminal aspect and the laws of the land.
generalcrazy 07-30-08, - 02:38 AM Submit your bid!!!
Perhaps .. LOL
Hey, maybe we cant STOP crime, but we sure as heck can fight it good.
Bait Cars - they work.
Where are the Stake outs with fake Stolen cars to catch car thieves?
Drove all day today, where are the cops?? Saw 1 bike cop joyriding thats about it.
Saw dozens of people run red lights, and tons more never used a signal.
They wont enforce the law, what do we expect?
Crime, thats it, there is no law and order.
Bahamians want to park all over the sidewalk, block the road, make lots of noise, cuss or beat someone down when they angry, they WANT to do what they like, they DONT want cops or anyone to try tell them otherwise - change? It will never change.
Objective thought 07-30-08, - 08:05 AM It is not governments fault, as the PM said they have done all they can.
"We have increased the number of police officers, we have increased their resources, in terms of vehicles and other essential equipment. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the number of magistrates is increased. We have a serious backlog in criminal cases.
"I don't know what else we can do more than what we have been doing," said Ingraham, who reiterated that many of the crimes committed in The Bahamas are by people who know each other, including drug-related crimes and domestic violence."
The fault lies with the population. Crime needs a good number of people who will buy stolen goods, drugs, who will support prostitution etc. We got that - a big population. Crime also needs people who will turn a blind eye to what they see - we got that too.
The only people who can turn crime around is us! Put a cop on every corner, hire 1000 magistrates, build a bigger jail, even start hanging but if the people don’t stop supporting crime it will mean nothing.
According to the FNM during the PLP's term in office, crime was the PLP's fault!! Or have you forgotten those famous words, "Get rid of the PLP and you will get rid of crime"....
What short memories we have!! Don't blame the population for expecting more. They have been deceived once again!!! Save the drama!!!
concerned 07-30-08, - 09:21 AM It becomes difficult to enforce the law among the general public when those who should be doing the enforcing are also corrupt. Clean out the RBPF. Is there an Internal Investigations Dept.? Who is policing the police.
If simple rules and regulations in the Civil Service are habitually broken and disregarded, why should we expect laws to be taken any more seriously? Start enforcing company policies and create an atmosphere of discipline and consequences in the workplace and it will carry over to the larger community.
Start enforcing the law from the top down. If you are fighting in the HOA, then you should be charged with disturbing the peace or disorderly behavior or something. If you can't prove where the money in the closet came from then you should be treated just like the Haitian man with the $2 million in a suitcase. No one should be seen to be above the law.
Community police officers need to do more than just cruise by. They need to stop, park, get out, form relationships with people in the communities. They need to question some of the youngsters who are just hanging out. I don't mean to be funny but if Sherry could get one week for loitering, then so should many of these other loiterers.
Impose fines for misdemeanors, enforce the law and collect the fines. Put some money back into the Treasury so that Police officers can get a raise and the court's time can be better used for more serious crimes.
Try serious crimes like murder, rape, robbery quickly not only will this stop criminals from getting out on bail because they've been held too long awaiting trial but it will send the message of zero tolerance to other potential criminals.
Most importantly, parents please raise your children to love their country, respect authority, to have some self discipline, morals and ethics. Lead by example, set rules and expectations for your home and enforce them even if it is inconvenient for you.

We need our own mayor gulliani. The same things were happening in NY and worst: much worst. However, he did it and made no continued speeches about not being savy enough to complete the job. In the Bahamas we love heralding incompetence and ineptness. Any minute now, Ingraham soon get an award, just like Christie for trying hard and his efforts. Mind you not an award for actually doing, but trying. But nothing beats a failure than a trier.
And his reasoning that he is doing all he can is a LIE. Murderers still on bail, doing the same crime. Drug dealers still on bail selling more drugs. People smugglers still on bail still smuggling illegals. People who hold up traffic with shot gun, talking about he looking for his stuff, does get fines and no real punishment. NO its not the people, its the powers that be.
Plus, give me an example of how Bahamians supports murderers, drug dealers and rapists.
