View Full Version : PM Says No Immediate Solution To Crime
pkmeow 07-30-08, - 02:32 PM I agree with the Prime Minister on this one to an extent. As long as a criminal mentality continues to blossom throughout Bahamian society no amount of police cars and magistrates will be able to hold back the tides.
With that said, we also have to consider how other failing institutions are related to crime: schools for example. Studies show that as the educational system in a country deteriorates, crime rates rise. We can also consider immigration. I'm not suggesting that immigrants may be naturally pre-disposed to violence, rather without proper processing they will obviously have a greater difficulty finding jobs that pay well enough to insure a reasonable standard of living.
This goes far beyond just equipping the RBPF with everything they need. Crime is the measure for how successful a society is in all facets.
We need our own mayor gulliani. The same things were happening in NY and worst: much worst. However, he did it and made no continued speeches about not being savy enough to complete the job. In the Bahamas we love heralding incompetence and ineptness. Any minute now, Ingraham soon get an award, just like Christie for trying hard and his efforts. Mind you not an award for actually doing, but trying. But nothing beats a failure than a trier.
And his reasoning that he is doing all he can is a LIE. Murderers still on bail, doing the same crime. Drug dealers still on bail selling more drugs. People smugglers still on bail still smuggling illegals. People who hold up traffic with shot gun, talking about he looking for his stuff, does get fines and no real punishment. NO its not the people, its the powers that be.
Plus, give me an example of how Bahamians supports murderers, drug dealers and rapists.
The easy one first. Drug dealers. Many people buy drugs, they are not going to turn in their dealers! Some mothers and father see their sons driving around in fancy cars and the kid does not work! They never question because the kid helps support the family too. Look how many people called Ninety a nice man because he help them with their bills, held block parties, etc.
Many murders are because of drug dealing or gang related revenge - often the gangs deal in drugs. Other murders are over property stolen to buy drugs or others reasons but these goods have a ready market. Some murders are just crimes of passion and do not fall into this category.
I would agree that rapes are not supported but still, they often go unreported.

And lets not forget parents who willingly pimp their daughters out to an older man who takes care of the family finacially.

That is true I had forgotten that!
Danielle McDonald 07-30-08, - 09:51 PM I dont have a problem with a leader who stands his ground. My problem is a leader who stands his ground when it is clear that his policies and initiatives are not WORKING.
I concur....whats the point of standing your grounds when you screwing up the country and you dont care about what you are doing.
This to me is very troubling. It seems to me that the prime minister has thrown his hands up in the air and nothing can be done about crime.Comforting thought isn't it.I still believe more can be done. For one our judicial system needs to see to it that persons who are charged before the courts are brought to trial speedily. It does not make any sensd having people waiting for their case to be called 3 and four years after the fact. Also the bail act needs to be revisited. There are too many person on bail for attempted murder walking our streets.
RockWell 07-30-08, - 10:38 PM The hearts and minds of men cannot be controlled by any kind of government legislation. That is where crime finds its roots, and truly exists in its most potent form. So a man thinketh he doeth, in many cases that is.Foolish is the heart & mind of a child. But the rod of correction will drive away foolish thoughts.

Crime dont affect them at all. Its like they live in a bubble separate from the rest of the Bahamas. As a PM he should never make a statement as he did. So basically the criminals out there saying da Government cant do anything more about us so we might as well have a field day.
babydee 07-30-08, - 10:59 PM We as a country can only combat crime if we confront the situations front on!
1)What we should be doing is calling the police or social services if we see the neighbours or their children engaging in illegal activities. Many Bahamians have the attitude "lee ppl businezz alone and mind ya own" but crime is indeed everyone's business.
2)As many have said on this thread we need to reinforce stricter penalties so that persons would think before they act. Once ppl know that their ignorance will cause them "BIG TIME" maybe then the crime will start to decrease.
3) Parents with unruly children ( to the point where they are seen to be "Uncontrollable") should be reported and fined if they do not seek help for their children from either the police or a correctional facility. Again "WE" have a part to play whereas we must make the report;remain anonymous if you're afraid.
4). There are some police officers who are just as bad or even worst than those in jail...ssking at young girls, letting their "boys" get off the hook, patrolling the streets and turning a blind eye to crime but rather harass some innocent person. Here again," We" must go beyond measures if we have to, in order to make our country a better place by reporting these officers. The law applies to "the men in uniform" too. Surely I have made my reports!
5). Every person out on bail essentially serious offenses should be on weekly/if possibly daily surveillance and should be involved in some program to help them build a better character. If they refuse to adhere to these policies then send em 2 jail!
6). There should be a national curfew for children under the age of 18 to minimize roaming on streets.
7). Murderers and persons found in possession with guns or a substantial amount of drugs and there is good enough evidence should "not" be placed on bail.
8). More youth program initiatives should be screened to try and improve it and more programs of different interests should be available to youths esp those in the destitute areas.
9). We need more church driven motives in order to captivate the minds of children.
10). In a time like this when prices are gettin higher there is a need for higher cheques. Also more jobs are needed as well, time for gramz n papz dem 2 take their pension and let some young folks get the training thats necessary to take over.
11). We need to see a change in our leaders and this too will influence a change in Bahamians...Our leaders should remember that they must first be the change that they want to see.
THERE U HAVE IT...BUT WE ONLY CAN DO IT IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER:hammer:

This is so true. When they have more bodyguards and a security detail than some Bahamians can imagine, it seems as if they live in a different bahamas than we do.they show up to the HOA talk sleep smoke and believe that they have done something. But boy let one of their family members be affected by crime,or a tourist, den ya ga see dem making changes. I dont know what happen to HI.This seems to be a different HI of 92 who really made change happen.I gattee get a copy a da manifesto and see if this I did all i can do was in it.SMT

Da Educator 07-30-08, - 11:51 PM You would think that someone who has held the office for two consecutive terms before would make vast improvements and a great difference in the way he governs this time around, but its obvious that nothing has changed. We've been duped.
