View Full Version : Assaulted at work?
I was listening to a BBC talk show in the net. The subject was “assaulted at work by the public.” I was surprise to learn that in the UK it is a big problem. The police, and this is no surprise, suffer the most. What was a surprise is that Health Care Workers are next with 45% being assaulted in any given year. Others that were attacked often were Airport Security, Teacher and even Garbage men and Firemen!
Anyone here been assaulted? The definition of assault on the program was having something thrown at them, being pushed or even beaten, shot or stabbed!
BAHMIA 08-02-08, - 03:51 PM At work? Fortunately, no. But I know anyone who has, at the bank.
(But they were doing the assaulting. Let's say that job didn't last long.)

MY LAWD, errytime I go to a GOVT office or a store or have to interact with ppl on a customer level, I leave saying "WHAT HAPPEN, ALL DA CUSTOMER SERVICE GENES GONE WIT DEM SET DEY SEND AMERICA AYE!!!!"
If yall wan know the root of our attitude and piss poor service all I gun say is
WE GET IT FROM OUR MOMMA (COLONIAL). Dese workers over here dont gee a damn about nothing but TEA and cigarette! Period, full stop AMEN!!!!!!
Da NHS, OH LORD!!!!!! Iffen you ain sick when you start dealing with dem, trust you gun be sick by the time dey finish with you! (I worked dere, trust me on dis). Dont get me wrong the Doctors and such are GREAT, but if you could get pass, not having to knock the receptionist out before you get dere. You gun be in good hands.
Let me end dis, wit dis. As Bahamians we know KMART for cheap prices, competitive and customer service, right. We let me introduce to dey RUDE, NO MANNERS, NO BROUGHT UPSEE COUSIN, ASDA. Dese dont play when it come to slunking an dpassing da buck dread.
I know why, sometimes ppl is just go dere on dem, I swear!!!!
cynthialily 08-02-08, - 06:43 PM I have not been assaulted at work but a few of my colleagues, Receptionists, have been, and it could be the lack of Customer Service Skills they possess that was the cause.
Sapadilly, I too wonder where the Brits get their manners from and have come to the conclusion after seeing children with their Mum's.... they get it from Mummy! They walk in the class-room not a crack to anyone in the morning, but they expect to rudely interrupt a conversation you may be having with another parent. The NHS Secretaries are the top class when it comes to protecting their bosses/Dr's from the undesirable clients, and they too are at the receiving end of assaults be it verbal or physical (not by me I hasten to add) I have brought-up-sie

I know what you mean, but to be fair, by the time a poor patient has called for the 50th time for test result or a consult and has gotten the wrong person 49 of those times, I can understand why I had irate ppl on the other end of the lie.

That's real sad Ann. These children have no shame. :(

Somehow I find myself wanting to know how that figure was arrived at?
100 workers, 45 different workers assaulted in the year?
or
100 workers, the same one rude, pushy, abusive worker assaulted 45 times in the same year?
Somewhere in between?
We were told back in school not to trust statistics, I took the advice from back then but the longer I go in life, the less I trust them.
all the best,

You are right about statistics, but the truth that nurses do get assaulted still remains. There was one nurse that called in - she was stabbed repeatedly with a needle.
My sister was a nurse. She was always telling stories about patients that were abusive, both physically and verbally. The thing is the police never take such things seriously.
