Joe Baboon 08-07-08, - 11:19 PM Money is flowing into COB on a scale never seen before. (private money) It most certainly is. Lets hope it ends up somewhere useful. Teniel 08-07-08, - 11:21 PM COB has potential. Get rid of the politics, hire more qualified professors (nobody should have anything less than a PhD), and they will be on their way. University is for professional and academic learning. Academic discipline's like Economics, Philosophy and other liberal arts and sciences certainly should require PhDs. The same with math and hard sciences. Professions like medicine, law, accounting and others - certainly don't need PhDs. In fact, I think a pure academic in a profession is the worst choice possible. You have to look at each school individually to determine the right qualifications for instructors. It makes no sense to pay 200K a year to a business professor simply because he has a PhD and no business experience. sapadilly 08-08-08, - 05:48 PM COB has potential. Well that is the optimal situation isnt it, but far from the reality of most Universities world wide (how many Phd/Mphil/MRES teach undergraduate classes). The academy is a competitive place and in order for COB to have such it requires offering REALLY, REALLY attractive salaries, fringe benefits and most of all a research environment in which to development your faculty. They will get there and I believe that some of the teachers/lecturers there are top notch. I certainly got a great education, despite the lack of infrastructure. I believe most Bahamian children should go there before going off to University. We get get out of school much earlier than our American contemporaries and no longer sit A levels like the English system. The time spent at COB goes a long way in developing them academically and emotionally. We just have to continue to demonstrate confidence in our system. Well, the Bahamian public and private sectors should demonstrate such confidence by offering a premium salary to COB grads over non-COB grads. That would certainly bring in more Bahamians and support into COB. sapadilly 08-08-08, - 06:05 PM Well, the Bahamian public and private sectors should demonstrate such confidence by offering a premium salary to COB grads over non-COB grads. The Hotel Training College has something similar; hotels sponsor those in the Chef programme. I am not sure it guarantees a job, but they do supply internships. It is one the features that makes that programme one of the best in the region. |
