View Full Version : Gas Prices.
niknak30 08-17-08, - 11:18 AM Could someone please explain to me why is it that gas prices have been steadily falling in the US for the past month, but here in the Bahamas it took them a month to drop it by $.50??
Why is it that when crude oil prices were increasing by the week, so was fuel costs here at home? But when the prices start dropping, they can't follow the same trend? Are we as a people truly living by the slogan of that political party .."Forward ever..backward never!"
Come on fuel companies, what we gatta do to get fuel prices under $4.00?!??
canesfins 08-17-08, - 11:31 AM It is an easy explanation - the price drops in the US are detemrined based on the most recent price of the most recent inventory purchase, which happens at least weekly at US gas stations. In the Bahamas, they dont purchase inventory weekly, they purchase it in much greater bulk so in order to realise a downward adjustment in the price, you have to extinguish the current inventory bought at a higher price. Remember, this is still a business, and business principles still apply. On average, the price per gallon at the pump has always been arounf $1.50 higher in the Bahamas than the US, it is still roughly still that.

We have talked about that a lot here. I have said that if prices go up we see it in a day or two. If it goes down it takes weeks to see it. With all our talk there has been no explanation, other than “things are different in the Bahamas.” What that difference is no one can explain (unless I missed it.)
Buying in bulk is not the thing as the price still goes up fast, down slow no matter how much gas is stored away - or so it seems.
PS Welcome to the site.
niknak30 08-17-08, - 06:18 PM Thank you both for your responses and for the welcome (CG).

...my explanation is that yall are getting screwed.
Replacement cost makes sense but this doesn't seem in line with that.

Replacement cost makes sense but this doesn't seem in line with that. That is what we are trying to tell you but you keep talking about BULK:realmad:fuel buying we use just as much gas from our stations a the do that why when gas goes up it those too but not down. go cliffton and see how offten the tinker comes in:realmad:
Ting-um 08-18-08, - 08:02 AM I keep saying it because it makes sense and that's how I see it where I am. If it is happening differently in the Bahamas then I don't know that. And yall keep complaining and never do nothing. So I assume yall are happy with it.

Well NikNak, someone has to pay for the red plates on the road, we have to pay for them as the public so that red plates (which make up 95% of the govt vehicles on the road) have a right and opportunity to drive around anytime between 6pm and 6am Monday through Friday and on Weekends so that the red plate vehicles can have a fair opportunity to be used for nothing pertaining to the Govt. Trust me, I have close relative who does it all the time and lets her sons and daughter use her Red plate vehicle all the time. Its does not even make sense me reporting it because her and the top man at her dept is best friends. She braggs about it all the time how she gets free gas.
So what if they buy the Gas in bulk, where there is a will there is a way, if they wanted to base their prices based on the market, they would still benefit, why, because where it may take 3 months to sell gas at $6.00 a gallon, if they reduce it to $5.50 a gallon, it may take two months to get rid off that load of gas to then purchase the next load at a lesser price the moment it is known that the next load will cost less but that will never happen because the Gas Station operators only make $0.40 per gallon no matter what the price is per gallon so they sure cannot help us or else they cant survive as you can see with the many Stations that are closed.
The Govt, whose profit from each gallon which is presently $1.77 per gallon will not help us also because of the first paragraph I posted above, someone gat ta pay for the red plates to be on the road, you could throw the green and blue plates in there also if you wish so in the mean time, while ya in Nassau, ya gat ta pay ya $7.00 a gallon because you have to pay an additional $1.01 per gallon to truely get one gallon of gas in your car, based on a little study done at a local Gas Station less than two weeks ago.....
Just tellin it like it is in a way where many dont want to accept/believe it or want the public at large to know:hammer::hammer:

Under $4.00!! Those were the 'good 'ol days' baby. Never to be seen again.
Esso is $5.37 by the way, as of yesterday. Are there any cheaper stations?

Arrh, its actually $6.38 per gallon because ya have ta make sure and add an additional $1.01 to gat exactly one gallon of gas because the pumps are not accurate (at least the company you mentioned), use a one gallon gas container first thing in the morning before it gets hot if you need proof because once ya gas go in your car, you cannot accurately measure it.....
by the way, as of yesterday. Are there any cheaper stations?

It is no different here in Ct. Gas prices have only dropped an average of.52 since the July highs of 4.41 to 4.99. Everyday there was some suggestion of any type of political or weather problem they rose, but in all the time the price per barrell has dropped, .52 cents is all we have seen as a savings here.

BAHMIA 08-18-08, - 02:55 PM I was at the "On the Run" on Thompson Blvd./Farrington Rd. $5.37 was on the pump.
trubahamian 08-18-08, - 03:03 PM It seems to me after looking into it that gasoline itself ,if not government subsidised, costs about the same errywhere. The difference in price is the difference in the way it is taxed from country to country.
