Ashley Newbold was sentenced today for the murder of Joyanne Cartwright who was a former 601 night club manager.

The father of Joyanne Cartwright said on the news this evening that “ If Ashley Newbold was convicted then that means that the jury believes that All of the events of the case was true ”. He also added that he will be looking for further convictions in the case of his murdered daughter. Lawyers for Ashley Newbold said that “the Jury has made their decision and it is now left to the Police to continue the investigation into the case”.

The son of the nation's first Prime Minister, lawyer Obie Pindling, was also accused by Newbold to be involved in the murder of Joyanne Cartwright. Pindling claims that there is a conspiracy against him and that he was exploited for money.

My question are:
Do you think that the police will further their investigation into this murder?
Who do you think was really responsible for the death of Joyanne Cartwright?
Why did this case take seven years to reach just one conviction?
Do you feel that the Justice system in the Bahamas is bias?
If there aren't any further convictions in this case how do you think the public would feel about our police and court system?

Please feel free to post your comments on this issue.

Wow, what a profound and nice thing to say. Even though I don't know if you're a 'Christian' I truly believe that just by living in this 'Christian nation' you have absorbed their love and ways.:realmad:

I think that there should be further investigations into the matter.I don't expect for much to come from it simply because the Pindling name is like the Kennedy Name . I think that Ashley Newbold being sentenced to life in Prison indicates that the Jury believed that he was not the killer but someone who had a stake in it .Let's see what happens next.

It's a very interesting and confusing case. It probably will be further investigated but no way do I believe that Mr. Pindling is directly involved in such a disgusting and violent act. Try to leave all judgements to the proper authorities. Nobody is responsible for their family name. I dare say they wear it well and I shall continue to keep the Pindlings in my prayers. Stay strong and keep the faith!

Doesn't anyone remember that Ashley Newbold himself stated in court that none of the testimony that the officers gave was true regarding his alleged "statement" to the police?

Doesn't it seem odd to anyone that the police have conveniently "lost" the original signed statement that Mr. Newbold gave which is why we were all subjected to that sensational, questionable testimony by the officers in court?

What about the tapes that the police made of Mr. Newbold's attempted extortion of Mr. Pindling? Why were they not introduced in court?

Why is the public so eager to believe the "alleged" statement of a man who has been implicated in at least two other murders and various other crimes as gospel? But the same public does not believe the testimony of a respected member of the community whose only crime appears to be an accident of his birth and perhaps some questionable personal judgment in who he chose to associate with.

Yes, in the Bahamas the Pindling name is somewhat like the famed Kennedy name in the United States. This mere fact makes it even more likely that someone could succesfully get away with attempting to publicly slander and humiliate them for any reason, credible or not.

Speaking of Kennedy-esque cover-ups, none has mentioned the involvement of the equally infamous Symonette name (the other "father" of our nation) in all this. Why not?

Other than his admission to being at the scene of the crime, I still can't figure out what basis the Attorney General's Office used to proceed with the case against Ashley Newbold in the first place.

My personal opinion: The real killer is still out there and I believe that he/she has precious little to do with either Mr. Newbold or Mr. Pindling, both of whom were probably lucky not to be killed themselves as well.

Face the facts if Mr Newbold killed Ms Cartwright it was Murder. He should have been sentenced to death. On the other hand if he was given Life then it indicates that the jury believes that someelse killed Ms Cartwright .Pindling or none that the facts. And if yoy think that it is strange that the Police lost the original statement is strange then you tell me who stands to benefit from that .

Off the cuff & from the gut...I suspect Pindling to be very very much involved! Whether or not it will be pursued is a completely different matter. Y? Becoz, class and money operate on a different set of rules in this country and it is this fact that is breeding much of the violence---I pray the full and complete truth is revealed and soon!

Isn't that what I said?

Now on the matter of the "lost" statement, that will benefit whoever the police want it to. Since the original cannot be found, they can pretty much say whatever they want and implicate whoever they are told to implicate don't you think?

I think the fact that he was sentence to life proves that the jury did not believe that he killed that young lady. The police won't investigate this matter because this the son of a national hero being accused, and look who is the Goverment of this nation, The party which his father has steered until his father died. So there it is case closed. But God will not let this injustice be swept under the rug. If he is gulity for this crime he will pay for this crime in the long run, or his children will pay for the sin of their father. Someone has to pay for this life that was taken needlessly.

There are too many questions in this case for the police or the public to just let this one slide. If they do, it will be obvious what trend we will be on in this country for the next 7 years at least.

Time will tell, and all involved should know they will pay somehow one day if they are responsible for frigging up someone's life. Since we are a so-called "Christian nation" (that's right, the quotes mean that is utter crap - Christian does NOT describe the average Bahamian) then we should remember that sometimes the sins of the fathers are visited on the children and their children's children... might not seem fair but that's what the book says.

And regarding the slain girl's lifestyle, how she chose to live her life is her personal business. To say she got her just rewards based on media reports or sip-sip is unjust - who is anyone on this rock to state that she deserved to be shot to death?

You know there are really too many unanswered questions and there are truly too many coincidences.

I believe that we should look further into the circumstances surrounding the case.....the many wrong doings by Ms. Cartwright to various people immediately prior to the shooting, the (dangerous) people she associated with and the manner in which she was killed.

I believe that there is a possiblility that Newbold did not kill Joy nor did Pindling but I do believe that they sure do know who did.

Extoriton...Fall Guy...think about it...too remnicent of a cover up...there are more holes in this case than swiss cheese.

But as is always, on this island and indeed the world, once someone has taken the fall that'll be the end of it.

God Bless

Star , you are dead on with your points.I missed that crap that classicromeo22 wrote. As for this nation being a christian one ;well that's what the Pastors say to soothe our minds. There ain't nothing christian about mothers accepting gifts from their drug dealing children. I heard a comment made about someone the other day .The person said that he should have stopped dealing drugs before he got caught. That is the mind set of the average (Christian Nation) Bahamian .Not that it was wrong and now he well be punished .And you guys wonder why there are so many criminals walking the streets; BECAUSE CRIMINAL MINDED PERSONS MAKE UP THE JURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up Bahamians" the grass is growing and the horses are dying!!"

I am a bit perplex. If an investigations is ongoing regarding this case then how can you have a conviction and sentencing? Should not the police have concluded their investigation before Newbold was tried and sentenced. Suppose in their investigation it is revealed that the other person concerned with Newbold on the night of Joy's murder actually did pulled the trigger. Who is this other person that was with Newbold on that fateful night? I think seven years are a long time to still be investigating a crime. During the trial Newbold claimed in his testimony that Pindling was the other person with him that night and was in fact the trigger man. How is it the police has one of the killers and not the other. If Newbold is one of those persons at the scene then it stand to reason he knows who the other person is. Don't mind him recanting his story. There is a very good reason he did that. Why isn't Pindling being charge or arrested? Pindling admitted in court that he owed Newbold the convicted killer thirty thousand dollars. For what was this money owed? Every policeman knows Newbold was a hitman for hire. He was involved in other killings for hire. Pindling admitted he had a personal relationship with Joy Cartwright and a close friendship with Ashley Newbold a hitman. Joy stole 2 million dollars of Ninety's money Pindling was holding. Ninety was putting the pressure on Pindling to retrieve his money. Joy refused to return the money in addition she was involve with another man while seeing Pindling. Pindling found out about the other man and made preparation to deal with Joy. He certainly couldn't go to the police with the legitimate story. Pindling decided to entrapped Newbold by recording his telephone conversations while the police listened. Newbold kept calling Pindling for his payment but Pindling made up excuse for not paying him. Pindling had ample opportunity to commit this crime just as Newbold described in his testimony. He left the club located on Farrinton Road which is only a few minutes drive from Joy's house around 3am. Joy was killed early in the morning. Pindling has no alibi after 3am. Put jealousy for betraying him with another man 'Symmonette' anger for stealing 2 million dollars from him and pressure from a major drug boss and you get a pretty good motive for murder or hiring someone to do the job. Pindling seems to have more reasons for wanting Joy dead than Newbold. The defense Pindling put up that someone trying to ruin his name doesn't wash. If he was concerned about his name he would not be associated with Ashley Newbold a hit man, Ninety a convicted drug lord and cheating on his wife.
