View Full Version : The University of the Bahamas
garnelleo 04-18-05, - 05:10 PM Not to long ago I was a lil ticked off from what was going on at the College of the Bahamas but now I am pleased at what I am seeing from Dr. Smith and the and the Council.
Firstly 7 taskforces were appointed to assess the major areas of the college, to give a detailed account of certain issues and provide a outline for changes. This is a major step in the right direction, as I was apart of one of those.
Two they are aquiring heaps of property in the Oakes Field area, like the Thompson Blvd building and supposedly the lot adjacent to COB's tourism training center.
Three a 15 million+ dollar library, which hopefully will commence construction
Hopefully, we will see more things such as this occur in the coming weeks and months.
My one question is how are things going to get paid for? Hopefully tuition wont skyrocket.

Such things were in the works for a while...I read something on the development of cob to university status about a year ago...and they had some of these things out lined.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 04-19-05, - 09:18 PM my only question is, why does the sign that they have in front of the old passport building say College/University of the bahamas? it makes it seem as if the idea isnt finalised yet. or maybe i'm just paranoid :(
Tafadhali 04-20-05, - 03:34 PM It would be a great idea to move the whole school off Nassau. It would create much needed economic empowerment in one of those Out Islands and no excuse for students not to be focused on their studies.
Alien 04-20-05, - 06:19 PM now will all kids who want to go be able to go??
hehehhehe

You know that comment makes not sense right. Why move the college far away from the majority of the people. Imagine moving the bus depot miles away from the nearest residential area...who would the bus be serving....The college of the Bahamas is ideally situated in the centre of the mean city of Nassau.

So its more about convenience for you? Its about Focus, being in an educationally friendly and stimulating environment. The main idea would be for everything in all these 700 islands not to be so Nassaucentric, and you wonder why the brain drain continues on the Family Islands...

Acklins please Exuma!!!!!
But seriously you didnt answer the question and you are totally missing the point. Having the school in a rural community or an underdeveloped out island would simulate the local economy and have something for the locals there to gravitate towards instead of simply leaving and always moving to Nassau. The idea is simply staring everything away from Nassau. I thought of this becaue its so many instances where people have only been to Miami and within the confinement of the 21x7, and never once to Inagua or Crooked Island or whereever else. The Bahamas is more than just Nassau as we all know, now its time to show that we simply dont look at our Family Islands as backward and destitute but hopeful of promise and opportunity.

It would be too expensive first of all. Building a new campus etc. Furthermore, with all of the money spent on the current infrastrcuture (fibre optic etc), it would be for naught. Thirdly much of the students who attend the college are part time students who work and go the school during the evening. Plus what about the faculty, staff, and the other employees. They would have to relocate along with their families.
Regarding the whole University/College of the Bahamas reference. In our taskforce meetings that is how we referred to COB and i think you are going to hear more of that.

Agreed! I would however like to see some type of tertary instituion(s) set up in places like Andros, so that there is not a major drove of people heading to Nassau for school and work. May be an angricultural/agribusiness school or a technological college. The possibilities are endless, and the potential is there for the picking.

That's a convenience issue, that's out the window. :dunce:
There are too many other Bahamians who need work, who are tired of making beds, who would like a career change. Making all these excuses and excess considerations as to why and how anything gets done is the main reasons why there is low moral and low work ethic for alot of Bahamians on the job.
The gov't is not concerned about how money is spent efficiently, case in point the bleacher fiasco, this was just an idea to help the further economic development of the Family Islands, Nassau could use the space. While were at it the Prison and the Detention Center should go to.
