I have always had this issuse with this terminology of our own citizens. In my opinion if you always think of yourself as a small man you will be treated as such. Small men always wait on the government instead of doing something for themselves. Small men are always ignored....or never respected for that matter. Small men never keep themeselves enlightened of the facts so that they really know whats going on. They also need to be taken care of at all times and need to be guided because they have no plan for themeselves. I believe that this way of thinking is slowing us down...and eventually will destroy us. No one in this nation is a small man, they make themselves this way. Don't you know that little people always get step on? You see this is why we are a democracy and not a dictatorship, nor an absolute monarchy. Every person is empowered because we make our own futures. And some people wonder why they are never taken seriously or feel left out. You teach others how to treat you and I think that teaching comes from your own self identity.

you are so right but becuase most bahamians see themselves as the small man they will never relise your point. it is a vicious cycle.

I don't see it as a derogative term. I think it comes from the term "Small Holder." A Small holder might own or farm a few acres of land as apposed to the "Large Land Holders" or Estate Holder who owns hundreds, if not thousands of acres.

One might say that the man who owns and runs a vegetable stand by the side of the road is a Small Man as apposed to say, City Markets. Yet, there is dignity in his work. To me the term refers only to what he owns not his character, or his vote. He gets one vote, same as the Estate Holder.

I agree CG and when I said thing small live small was referring to small minded people.

My father who happens to be a well know man ( not that it matters ) uses the term "The Small Man" alot and he also uses The Collar Term alot as well ( blue, white etc ) he uses it as a figure of speeh I guess ( he tells it like it is )

I agree though, the word is usually used very much as a habit. What I was thinking about was the people who really believe that they are small and give in to that stuff...and end up nowhere....or at least end up stuck in place that they dont want to be :realmad:
