nyflava 06-07-05, - 12:59 PM dont forget, there will just be VOIP start-ups outside of the USA. this situation displays why i have a love/hate relationship with the USA. they always spoiling everything. but then again they looking out for their own people.
yes and the bahamas is a perfect place for one of a startups
it continues to amaze me why the government prohibits competition with BATELCO, new technology and competition means lower costs to the citizens the government is supposed to serve.

simple, the gov owns batelco so if they allow others to come up in here they would be loosin out. yall think if the gov of the bahamas owned a cable company cable bahamas was goin to be coming up in here? all i know is it is ancient style for a gov to own untility companies etc. the role of the gov is to run the country AND THATS IT. doing otherwise slows down progress becuase the gov is pre oocupied with things that they shouldnt.
skype is based in Europe ..

what does that have to do with the price of apples? Skype is an application that runs on your machine, using your computer resources, occupying your internet connection and bandwidth. Skype isn't going to complain if you are using their service, but BTC might!

sounds like communism to me, they own the power company too?
is solar power banned too?

when they cross that line, p2p, and then IM, then it would be email, i doubt they will last long in the bahamas ... they'll have riots at the schools .. no IM ..arghhh!

The Govt owns a great big chunk of Cable Bahamas btw. And guess who owns a great big chunk of Indigo Networks, the so called "competition" for BTC and CB?
Jimmy Geek 06-08-05, - 12:54 AM Skype still will use trackable (and billable) bandwidth, so therefore it too will be regulated one way or another through the ISP.
Yes, you are right. The amount of bandwidth used by Skype and any other internet service could be subjected to the local “Telco Gods”. Because of its point-to-point encryption (Skype), it would be very hard for CB or BTC to tell if you are using Skype. With centralized VOIP services like Vonage, BTC could easily identify and trace VOIP packets on their networks. I like Skype. The only problem with it is scalability.

If they started to crack down on VoIP, it is then up to the local "Tech Gods" to 1. start their own ISP which allows free reign across the wire or 2. begin implementing SSH tunneling solutions that circumvent any attempts to block the service.
Necessity is the mother of invention..or in that case adaptation.

but then you still have the PUC to deal with .. :(

Let's not forget that this is The Bahamas. That's a minor technicality.
The PUC takes its instructions from the government. And some would dare say that some government members often make their decisions based on the "advice" of a group of older, mostly dead men...Oh yeah and one woman.

to NYFLAVA it isnt communism it is a monopoly. joe i dont think bahamians relise how serious this thing is most likely becuase our people have been socialised to the idea that the gov suppose to own these things cuase vee is bahamian we dont relise how detrimental it is to us. look at any striving country those goves dont own power companies, airlines, phone companies etc. it is foolishness

i am confused, does the government own BATELCO or is it a private government sponsored monopoly?

It's a Government Owned Monopoly. It is owned by the gov and it is a monopoly. There is a $300,000 fine to sell VOIP for example, this ordered by the PUC (government).
