nyflava 06-09-05, - 10:34 AM It's a Government Owned Monopoly. It is owned by the gov and it is a monopoly. There is a $300,000 fine to sell VOIP for example, this ordered by the PUC (government).
wow you have a socialized telephone company that you have to pay for.
i thought socialzed segments of business were designed to provide free service to its citizens.
is anything else socialized? healthcare? other utilities?

socialized!! thats a luagh. BEC, BTC, and the rest been robbing us poor citizens blind since day one. but what can we do?
and they even have unions that make them shut down our Utilities whenever they want a couple days off ..!!
Jimmy Geek 06-10-05, - 04:23 PM VOIP has shown just how vulnerable the business model is for BTC. Unfortunately, their answer to declining revenues is to hire “consultants”.

That isnt so bad. What really is bad is the question of whether they actually listen to the consultants that they hire. BTC has the potential to make a truckload more of cash, steal a larger portion of the valuable broadband market and keep everyone happy with lower prices. All of the ingredients are in their hands, but I don't think that they see it. Nor do I think they will allow their "consultants" to have the creative freedom to unleash some serious technology on this island.
They'll wait until some other company begins to creep up on them and then the PUC will probably step in to "regulate" the situation. Foreign investors have already lost confidence in our tech market. Just look at what they did to SRG - Millions of wasted investment dollars, just to protect a dinosaur that limps along. I couldnt belive when SRG agreed to give up their Internet clientele. What were they thinking?!? They could've deployed a WiMax network, offered VoIP services (in addition to a few other goodies) and demolished BTC.
No need to worry tho, Technology is the scissors that will eventually cut through all the red tape. They can't stop it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm :-)
And check how much they are paying these consultants, especially when their findings will never be utilized in this, or former govs .... i think with bahamas air, they paid $1 million for them to tell them what they should have already known or researched.... they ever heard of the flippin intrenet??? I can understand if they want something to back it up with, but for who? Where is it going? Yah cant run, own, or contemplate an airline if yah cant take care of simple things like ground traffic control .. darnit! :shaky:
..1 hour driving from east bay to Carmichael Road today, and $15 gas, got run off the road twice, had to ignore drivers trying to cut in front of me 21 times, witnessed 6 drivers that ran red lights, 16 drivers driving at 20 mph or so, with very much trouble taking simple turns, 1 almost head on collision at a light where the opposite driver forgot I had the right of way ..... all this is what i counted on the way (give or take), starting at east bay st, most were in the oaks to fire trail area ... and guess what, i didnt see 1 Police. .. This doesnt even include the people that overtook/cut in at the fire trail/texaxo light on the Sir Milo "highway", mussee seen at least 100 or so have total disrespect for other drivers by doing that ... that crap is pee me off, same happens at the montagu light ... i make sure they gonna hit me hard if they try that when im in line .... ha hha hhhah ah
Yah know, time to hook the jeep cam up and show yall whats up ....its gonna happen soon now, just waiting for the rugged vehicle DVR to arrive ... :-)

Considering the US can't get through to Nassau when it rains a lot or the tide is high, we should feel blessed for what we have. The BTC infrastructure hasn't changed in decades. Underground wiring is actually sitting in the water table.
Sometimes I think they have the old-time ladies at the switchboard, moving jacks from one hole to another to make connections. When you call a cell phone, the 'cannot connect' message says that the person has left their vehicle! No one has a car phone anymore! People still wait months to have a phone connected to their house.

Sorry, Mr. Speilberg!
When should we expect the trailers (ha!) and the debut of
'Rory's World - A Secure Life: Behind The Wheel'
Soopaduke 10-28-05, - 08:45 PM After reading the entire thread, I just had to register and throw in my two cents worth. Funny enough I came across this site whilst googling for something completely opposite to anything Bahamian......Funny that?...
As a Bahamian ex-pat, living in London I could'nt begin to tell you how much better things are here but if I were to begin to tell you how much better things are there (Bahamas), I probably would never end.
Shure, BTC is a monopoly, the government is always in the way of "progess" on countless issues, etc..., etc... How else are they suppoed to keep a balance. Yo do'nt pay income tax or sales tax! This point is only effective if you do. I pay 17.5% extra on everything I buy here from a napkin to a Nissan. We pay 80% extra fo a litre (not a gallon) of gas. The British income tax has a number of bands: 10% (lower rate), 20% (basic rate for interest), 22% (basic rate), 32.5% (higher rate for UK dividends) & 40% (higher rate for other income).
Over here, the talk of the town is 8meg broadband which costs £40 a month
Soopaduke 10-28-05, - 09:14 PM £40 is equivalent to about $80 (www.bulldogbroadband.com) and we just got this technology this year! It even costs £8 ($16) just to drive a car in London. Given these few points which constitute the minute tip of the iceberg. I hope you all will appreciate the good things about the Bahamas you live in. Even though it bores the pants off of me. If you were to compare it to the rest of the caribbean it would always come out on top. Even the fellas over da hill I know in Nassau have more money than the poor sods I live around here in London and this is supposed to be where all the money is!! The Bahamas kicks! Don't let any poor little Englishman, etc... tell you any different! I live here. Its more backwards than anything Bahamian ever!
Ok...So thats my rant over then.... I'm going to hop on my bike now, cycle off to my £23,000 a year job in jolly old London town and leave you poor financially/technologically backwards natives to do whatever it is you do down there;-) Ta ra! :realmad: :uk: :realmad:
canewry 10-28-05, - 10:47 PM I am a network engineer in the US.
I support an infastructure that requires connectivity to Russia & India for certain job roles we outsource.
What I cannot fathom is why US companies are outsourcing call center operations for customer service, directory assistance, and technical support to India, and why they wouldnt use resources much closer to home by building and using facilities in the Bahamas?
Can anyone answer this question?
Why wouldn't I want to build an operations center providing well paying jobs new technology to a country that seems like a huge untapped resource?
Everybody speaks English and I have to train whomever I employ anyway,
and it appears to me that there is a need for jobs and technology that would be better appreciated than it is here in the US and abroad.
What prevents me from doing this?
It seems like a win win for the people, the government, and me!
The answer to that is simple: Labour is expensive...It would be cheaper to open up stores in the U.S.
canewry 10-28-05, - 10:52 PM I don't think there are children writing code, or working in call center operations, these are skilled positions.
The wages aren't much less than US wages for these positions in India, the main benefits are that employers in the US are not required to pay the Social Security and Employment taxes which an additional 20-30% of base salaries to offshore labor.
Are such taxes imposed by the Bahamian government on employers?
Do Bahamian workers in this industry make more than thier US counterparts in these types of employment?
One definately has to pay NIB which is simular to Social Security...and eventhough there isn't an Employment tax, after the Union finish negoiating with you, and you finish paying for work permits for your foreign trainers it will add up to the same thing.
canewry 10-28-05, - 11:01 PM not a software programmer, software programmers in the US are making $60,000-$100,000+
I am looking more in the lines of a customer service representative that answers calls and provides canned product specific answers or specific account information.
Anyone that can read, speak clearly, and learn how to use a computer can perform this job. I am sure there are alot of either unemployed or under employed Bahamians that can perform this job that are making less than $466 a week.
ditto!
