Barbaric custom! :what: Abiskan Moon-Angel 11-09-05, - 05:25 PM Ouch! Barbaric custom! :what: yep truly...at the same time though, it raises an interesting discussion - on cultural relativism...hmmm..still not sure of my position, because while i see it wrong for western countries to force their view of 'whats wrong' and whats 'inhumane' on other countries/cultures...i dont really think FGM is in order in this day and age...not given the health risks involved. True, but it interesting to note that the women who have to go through that, don't like it either and the majority don't want it for their daughters but they live in male dominated societies and have little voice. A custom is a custom, but barbaric is barbaric and that custom is barbaric even to those that live under that custom. As I am sure you know, but others might not, its one and only purpose is to limit a woman's pleasure during intercourse - if she lives through the operation that is - and it is done to young girls!!!! bahmaboy 11-09-05, - 07:51 PM moon- that had me luaghin. in seriousness male and female circ's are barbaric. the funny thing is western cultures site them for it but yet they still mutilate little boys as soon as they r born. what a world we live in dreeve 11-09-05, - 08:09 PM WOW, Outsourcing to circumcisim in the same forum sibject Hmm, I look the two up in the dictionary, no coorilation. Nope I didn't but feel they are not similar uless we Bahamians are going to start out sourcing medical pratices in the Bahamas. My view. I would not want a bride who was circumsized. Yet a topic for a new post Strange how threads can drift from one subject to another - sometimes it makes the thread more interesting. :) Abiskan Moon-Angel 11-10-05, - 03:49 AM A custom is a custom, but barbaric is barbaric but when do we draw the line CG? for us it's barbaric of course, but is that how they see it? do these women even know anything else? sure they live in male dominated society, where most of the men are simply war-mongering thugs..but do they think there is something wrong with it? maybe the westernised somalis who grew up elsewhere - maybe thats why they are speaking out. but what about the women IN somalia? what are their thoughts? if they knew AND understood the risks involved, would they continue to 'mutilate' their little girls? for some people, WE are barbaric because we hang people. and WE see some people as barbaric because of their forms of capital/corporal punishment: stoning, chopping of limbs...even what other eat!(cockroaches, bbq dogs, etc) - but this is custom for them and entirely 'normal'. interesting stuff. which brings another good question: why is it we think democracy is good for all the world's citizens? particulary when many people who have no history/traditional links of this political ideaology? hmmmmmm CG 11-10-05, - 09:35 AM but when do we draw the line CG? for us it's barbaric of course, but is that how they see it? do these women even know anything else? sure they live in male dominated society, where most of the men are simply war-mongering thugs..but do they think there is something wrong with it? maybe the westernised somalis who grew up elsewhere - maybe thats why they are speaking out. but what about the women IN somalia? what are their thoughts? if they knew AND understood the risks involved, would they continue to 'mutilate' their little girls? I think that in the main, they do see something wrong with it. Not just the women of Somalia but in the many other countries were this is still practiced. They see their young children die, become infected and in some cases see their girls in pain for the rest of their lives. As for "drawing a line." It is not up to us. It is up to them and if there is a move to change a custom - by the people themselves, we should support this. There is a move by women, and an every growing number of men, in the affected countries to do away with this. for some people, WE are barbaric because we hang people. If by WE you mean the Bahamas, we have not hanged anyone in a while. We seem to be backing away from it. The US is the only Western country that executes. and WE see some people as barbaric because of their forms of capital/corporal punishment: stoning, chopping of limbs... Perhaps we value life a bit more - at least our own life that is. even what other eat!(cockroaches, bbq dogs, etc) - I have eaten, what a cook we once had, called "ungodly food!" I don't see food as a problem. but this is custom for them and entirely 'normal'. interesting stuff. Cannibalism, Head-Hunting used to be normal to - particularly in New Guinea, But the Colonial powers put a stop to that and when New Guinea became independent they up held the ban. "Normal" can change. which brings another good question: why is it we think democracy is good for all the world's citizens? particulary when many people who have no history/traditional links of this political ideaology? hmmmmmm I am not sure we all do. It is the US that is keen on it. bahmaboy 11-11-05, - 08:54 PM democracy although not perfect is the best form of governance. Rory 11-11-05, - 09:01 PM Democracy is Freedom .. It is the only society where people are free, at least free to speak ones mind without facing a firing squad or getting hanged in a soccer stadium. :p Any thing less is pure criminal. Rory 11-12-05, - 07:36 AM hmmm debatable. you can get deported for it here. and arrested for it in the states. yep, but at least we dont get killed for it (at least not by the government) like in Cuba, Sadaams Iraq, etc.. and unless they are talking about killing people or setting off bombs, then they wont get arrested .. those laws always were in place, its called conspiracy to commit murder. .they just changed it a lil bit .. anyway, so how about the weather .. windy down here .. :-) |
