RockWell 06-29-05, - 11:11 AM i havent read anything about it ..
Leslie Miller has indicated that he has asked the govt. & the oil companies to each take a 61 cent cut.NOW will anyone listen to him is another matter.
Truthseeker 06-29-05, - 12:13 PM This do nothing PLP government is not only clueless but don't give a crap about the average bahamian. Leslie Miller is a fool and anybody who listens to or believes him is just as dumb. :hot:
12play 06-29-05, - 02:50 PM Let us have a trade off..we give then an LNG pipeline and they give us a gasolene pipe line..what ya t'ink 'bout dat?(that way we can pay 2.50 a gallon for gas again)
bahmaboy 06-30-05, - 02:40 PM Yeah, but that is still crazy. How are people able to afford a car with prices like that. After factoring in insurance, inspection, etc. sounds like you really must be rich to drive around the Bahamas. I heard that it is almost a dollar more expensive in some "family islands" too.
i meant the 2 somthing price in america, when i pull up to the pumps i thank god also i know when it is possible the price will be back in the 1 something range; did you know in some parts of the world gas its 5 something. while in the bahamas it is 3 something, when i am in nassau we rarely go bout the place, we see family, i go to the gym and thats about it. believe me we dont drive around nassau cuase it nothing there i havent seen before
bahmaboy 06-30-05, - 02:47 PM Since I am not in the country can someone tell me if the government has discussed reducing the tax it places on gas or possibly raising minimum wage?? Have they done anything to help the consumer in this extreme time of need?
YOU GAT JOKES HEY :bigmouth: that bunch of theives, i mean the gov, will never do this with out a push for change by bahamian people. to me it seems as though bahamians are quite content with being guaged and robbed blind, well i am not. also many dont know how much taxes they actually pay the gov,i think even though taxes are worked in when you go to the food store or buy gas the amount of money or the percentage that went to taxes should be on the recipt, also many dont know how to solve these expensive price tag problems, and many bahamians are totally opposed to having a income, property, and sales tax system to alliviate the problem even though it will be much better for the society.
aslo in terms of these taxes and minimum wage, whos side do yall think the gov is on: the foriegners or the bahamains

harsh words, men :p
Alien 06-30-05, - 05:07 PM the thing is the oil companies here have grown accostomed to robbing us and using the goverment to do it!
i want you to take note, that gasoline fluctuates in american cities that have a high per capita car percentage and large care percentage!!!
it is only a money making scheme by the part of oil companies...if people have more cars here, charge them more for gas!
look at the price indexes...
the cities that are
1. largely populated
2. have a huge car and SUV capita!!
they range to an average to about 2.15 to 2.60
while cities that have smaller populations and fewer cars range out to an average of 2.05 to 2.20 "at its most extreme"...
with the exception of Texas, where the oil magnates are, and a good majority of the people are in the poverty level, all the other major cities are being hit hard by oil prices in the U.S....New York, California, Michigan, Massachusets....which signifies that they can lower prices in cities where there is less demand.
which signifies that there is a blatant gouge by oil companies!
and to us....i am sure we can find a cheaper priceon oil, and find a way to lower the tax on oil....

very intresting thanks for teaching me something knew. these oil jiggaboo's know their day coming soon. cuase hybrid technology is becoming more popular and they know it is only a matter of time before cars are totally independent from gas. I CANT WAIT FOR THAT DAY
springman 07-03-05, - 11:04 AM One reason is the $1.14 Bahamas' Government tax! P.S (Is it $1.14?) Second reason might be the cost of transporting it here?
You are correct, its in the area of a dollar and change
Alien 07-06-05, - 11:33 AM You are correct, its in the area of a dollar and change
but the u.s. transports oil just as we do..and they keep around 2.20....
its the tax!!
along with the price gouging by oil companies!!
Sugar 07-06-05, - 01:43 PM Why is mostly everything in the Bahamas so high? I went to buy a bag of chips and it was 4.99. Here in the states the same bag of chips is 1.49. I understand that everything is imported but with the huge amounts of money the tourist bring in, shouldn't that bring the prices down? It seems as if this country should better off than it is.
I've always wanted to ask this question. Can someone please explain it to me?

one word sugar: TAXES. well i shouldnt say taxes, every country needs to have taxes, but the tax system. the bahamian government places an extrodinary amount of taxes on EVERYTHING that is brought into the country becuase the tax system is ancient style and needs to be revamped, i luaghed when i read you use the term "mostly" everything is expensive; i luaghed becuase everything even down to a pack of folder sheet is over taxed. many Bahamians dont relise this becuase when you buy products the recipt doesnt break down exactly how much went to the government (another ancient style practice). the tax system is horrible!!!!!! I GET THE BIGGEST LUAGH WHEN PEOPLE SAY THERE IS NO TAXES IN THE BAHAMAS. did you know that the bahamas is a tax heaven for the rich. did you know that poor bahamians have to foot that bill. also the system does a dis service to bahamians becuase whatever product in the bahamas that has a some what comparable price to one in the USA the bahamian public must endure buying a cheap version to get the same price as the quality version. eg: a 12 oz can of Coke a Cola sells for like 45 cents in the states, in the bahamas you can get a 12 oz can of soda for 55 cents but what brand? and of what quality is it?. the same can be said for cars, cloths, shoes etc
in america, canada, uk, and other common sense places EVERYONE pays a little tax on EVERYTHING; instead of SOME people paying a lot of tax on SOME THINGS.
THIS IS WHY THINGS ARE EXPENSIVE HERE:
there is virtually no property tax on cars, boats, bikes etc.
only SOME people pay taxes on their house, it has to cost a certain amount
there is no income tax
i am pretty sure there is no estate, royalty, or gains tax and other taxes like in common sense system.
becuase these taxes dont exist the gov has to inflate import charges 100-300 times just to pick up the slack. In the terms of retail the store owner has to charge 2-3 times more just to make a prophit (they have light, water, rent, and employees to pay). wouldnt you rather a tax system that would allow you and every one else to walk into a store in the bahamas pick up a bag of chips for 1.49 and be openly told that you have to pay another .20 cents in taxes versus going in paying 4.99 although you paid "no taxes" on it. you were secretly charged about 2.00 in taxes?
i personaly dont think the system will ever change becuase i hear many bahamians say they like it just how it is :dgi: :dgi: :dgi: :dgi: :dgi:
Truthseeker 07-06-05, - 05:05 PM The chief with the blown head gasket (PM) has stated that no income tax is to be instituted in the Bahamas under his watch. These buggers like it just the way it is. I can not understand that mindset. Why does a government deliberately keep its citizens poor and backward thinking. Oh yeah, I know, to enslave them. The average joe bloke is being screwed left and right by the leadership of this country and the sad part about it, he is totally unaware.
Income tax is not as bad as the boggie men make it out to be. It is far more equitable than the regressive import duty tax we secretly have to pay, but this is just my humble opinion. Damn, even a sales tax could work! :dgi:

AND THIS IS THE PROBLEM. the gov and leaders scare people to thinking every day taxes are horrible, the people believe it, they enstill it in their children and the cycle continues. the funny thing is when bahamains in the USA they dont mind paying the sales tax, i wonder if they even notice. boy i glad i catch sense
