As i know..."lookingnow at a tarriff book", any cpu equipment is duty free!
Electronics like t.v. and stereo you have to pay the 35%, but the rule hasnt changed either!
Any CPU related equipment is duty free, printer included!

if someone tells you other wise, take it to the highest of the area....cause if they change rules like that, it has to be documented and it has to be placed in newspapers and in the terminal!
Well I dealt with a Senior Customs Officer during my incident(was just like you) & I was told that parts are not duty free, also was surprised to find out that ink(powder) for laser jet printers are not duty free. :screw: ps: mind you the officers were havin a dispute over this but I guess senority ruled.

Yes, thats correct, Computer Parts are not duty free, though half the time they let them through as duty free anyway, especially if they are computer cards. Printers, Monitors, etc, once shipped by them selves, not part of a complete system, they charge duty. If shipped with a PC the monitors are duty free, the printer im not sure. 7% Stamp tax on everything regardless .. that can be a very expensive stamp with some orders! I have issues half the time with cameras, where Video Cameras are 15% Duty, but Digital Cameras are duty free, so half the time they let them through as Digital Cameras, but then the other half the time they put them as Video Cameras ... its a toss up as they are analog cameras (coax) with a digital CCD.

i brought a scanner in like 2yrs ago and it was duty free. so unless the rules did change i dont know why they would tell people that.

Scanners arent duty free, but like i said, it depends who is on Duty, most of them dont even know what duty goes for what, they generally just take a guess. If there is a discrepancy then they pull out the book ... which i have a copy of at my colleagues office by the way ... i could check on tuesday ... but im too busy really :-))

You simply happened to buck one of the few "computer components" that isn't duty free. Cartridges for printers and computer speakers (cause they can be modified with an adapter to connect to a regular stereo) are two exceptions to the rule, but usually if it is solely a computer component, it is duty free.

LCD Monitors are another set of products that they are getting a bit touchy about nowawdays because some of them can be attached directly to a cable or tv tuner box and used as a tv. Some lines are being blurred.

The rules seem to change at the whim of the customs officer.

There is a nice thick book with everything in it, but its not the easiest thing to understand ... i think the customs officers on duty must just use the smaller pamplet, a small booklet, which doesnt have everything, just the most common items, so when they come across something they dont know what it is, they use their own judgement.

Isn't it quite a coincidence that the oil dealers are in power in the US (Bush dem) and oil prices are the highest ever. Open your eyes. Same thing happened during the last Bush/oil Administration.

Crude Oil was trading at $70.00 a barrel. It had dropped to $59.15 a barrel. How it is up again due to Hurricane Wilma fears $60.63. The average price for gas in the US had dropped from a high average price of $3.09 to $2.70 a gallon, yet our price keeps going up!!! Are you sure it is George Bush who is to blame??

the problem is cg people dont read they just cast blame. even if its george bush's fault...he is not the one dictating policy in our country and he is not the one who raises our prices or why we pay so much tax on every gallon...let me bring it closer to home leslie Miller and our Gov't Ministry not dumb Bush!

Exactly! :D Bush is not home free in the Blame department but our guys are not either. The tax is to high, but we cant do anything about that because I heard that our government has already spent the tax even before it is collected!!!

Our government has allowed the oil companies to raise their profit margin while, at the same time not allowing the local retailers to raise their prices in line with what the companies are getting.

We are paying $4.00+ a gallon. But if you were to paddle a boat over to Miami you could get the same gallon for $2.40 or less.

Here is what I think we all should be doing. As of this posting, Shell has the cheapest gas $3.99. We all should buy from Shell. If in the future ESSO is a few cents cheaper, we should buy from them. In time the Companies we see that everyone is flocking to "X" gas stations and not "Y" gas stations. It would not be long before they put two and two together and realized that it is because of price. We, the consumers don't use our buying muscles as we should. Call the stations and ask them their price! I do!
