Alien 06-27-05, - 12:58 PM I dont think we ever asked this question correct me if i am wrong!
I think we are upset that Gasoline is high, but why its high i dont think the Bahamian public ever got any clear answers as to why it is so high, and what can our trade and foreign affairs minister about to do about it!
I am responding to the possibility that Gasoline can go up to $4 as stated by the Nassau Guardian by Minister of trade L.Miller.
What can we as the Public do to research and find possible solutions to why Gasoline is so high....
In my oppinion we have refineries and import from the proper oil producing countreis Venezuela and Iran "i think", and they are in concurrence with OPEC standard prices that are in accordance with U.S. import prices.
My point is, if we arew so close, and have refinery capability and American Gasoline moguls operating in Bahamas, why is it our prices are $4 dollars when American prices are $2.35?
That to me is a huge jump...if anyone has any answers or insight please add!

One reason is the $1.14 Bahamas' Government tax! P.S (Is it $1.14?) Second reason might be the cost of transporting it here?
Vicky 06-27-05, - 02:58 PM Actually the world is using more dead dinosaur juice faster than it can be refined.
Alien 06-27-05, - 04:04 PM is it really 1.14 in govt taxes...
I gues we really do need a Vat tax..or income tax!!!
:screw:
the cost to get it here would be the same for the US as it is for us, if we used the same amount. I imagine the US gets a better deal as they buy more of it? Hence it would cost less.
bahmaboy 06-27-05, - 08:30 PM i have bad news, gas in the bahamas is likely to hit 4.00 a gallon becuase it is projected that gas in certain parts of the USA is going to hit 3.00 a gallon.(speaking of 4.00 has anyone noticed that the average cost per item in the food store is 5.00) n e way what amazes me is that bahamians are just now realising they are being robbed on gas. i have another question why is it that the USA's fluctuates and the bahamas gas stays pretty constant? the gas where i lived moved several times in the past two months, actually just two weeks ago it was down to 1.96 now it is up to 2.05. i have another question, why dont gas stations in the bahamas publish their gas price, on the signs like they do in america?
all i know is the reason gas is high is
the taxation system needs to change, it is far better to pay a little tax on everything versus pilling it on. if bahamians had to pay property tax every year on their cars, boats, jet ski's, and motercylces then the gas they put in them wont cost as much. if property tax on vehicles is imposed then the gov can still charge gas tax but instead of it bein an outrageous dollar sumtin they can cut it to like 30 cents. this is the ONLY reason gas has ALWAYS been high in the bahamas.
also bahamians should keep in mind that gas tax is per gallon, so at the end of the year the typical driving bahamian paid thousands in gas tax. what a rip off
bahmaboy 06-27-05, - 08:41 PM another question i have is why are so many bahamians rolling round in SUV's knowing that gas is and has always been expensive. in fact i know like to people that bought SUV's knowing that gas is over 3.00, now they talkin bout they will have to park it cuase they cant afford the up keep. WHAT THE #$#.
its doing stupidness like this that makes the government not take people seriously.

Are gas prices really that high?? And here I was complaining having to pay $2.14 per gallon yesterday. That is ridiculous.

This is a very good point. So many of our people want to be like the Americans driving huge vehicles with the fancy rims not considering how much it will cost to maintain that kind of lifestyle.

That may be one reason why it is cheaper for the US. Another reason why it would be much cheaper for the US is that is actually has oil fields in its possession, so it has some control over the oil supply. Even further is that the US has huge oil reserves, so when OPEC tries to push up the oil price it can just flood its domestic market for a while using these reserves to push domestic prices down.

Yeah, but that is still crazy. How are people able to afford a car with prices like that. After factoring in insurance, inspection, etc. sounds like you really must be rich to drive around the Bahamas. I heard that it is almost a dollar more expensive in some "family islands" too.
finekameo 06-29-05, - 12:09 AM Since I am not in the country can someone tell me if the government has discussed reducing the tax it places on gas or possibly raising minimum wage?? Have they done anything to help the consumer in this extreme time of need?
