View Full Version : Brent Symonette for Prime Minister!
It is so obvious that some people just hate for the name PLP to be mentioned. Why can't you guys realize this is a different government from the one lead by Sir Lynden O. Pindling? I too would like to get into politics later on in the future. And I will also like to be a member of the PLP. Not because of who else is a member of the party but because of the rich and important history they provided to this country. Yes they did alot of wrong things but what they accomplished in the begining will never be surpassed by any party yet to come in the future of our nation. It takes the right people to change an organization. Things never stay the same. Just like a basketball team, let me use the chicago bulls for example. Before Michael Jordan = loosers. During Michael Jordan = most feared and respected Dynasty. After Michael Jordan = shamefull loosers. The name Bulls doesn't strick fear or demands respect from anyone in the NBA now. But back then with M.J. in his prime, nobody wanted to play them in the playoffs. The same with the PLP. The mistakes make people hate the party but that old party is gone now. Don't just vote against them because of the past. Embrace change and lend a little attention to new faces wanting to make a difference. If the FNM party underwent a face lift with lots of new members I will give them a chance to show what they are all about. I wouln't toss them aside because of the name of the party. That is whats wrong with a lot of other countries in the world. They aren't voting in a change for the better. They are playing the role of the old faithful. "My father voted for you." "My grandfather voted for you." "So I'm voting for you." Don't be stupid. I don't vote for a name and I don't vote against a name. I vote for the people who promises to make things better and demonstrates actions and shows proof of how it will be better. Those FNM's didn't do that and now they are gone.
Actually, I find it hard to disagree with a lot of what you said - but, I don't hate the PLP! Why should I? I have a strong dislike and mistrust for some PLP's and some FNM's for that matter. Parties change (as you said) they often go from good to bad and back again to good. I think the PLP is trying to get back to the good but they have a lot of bad baggage that people find hard to forgive. Just as you and Spirit find it had to forgive Mr. Symonnette.

Actually I can give a hoot about Mr. Symonnette, I just don't care to vote for any FNM unless I see some change in their party's views. I hear some of them saying things I like to hear but I am no fool. They are just changing their clothes without washing thier skins. In other words same dirt trying to be covered up. Show me some new people saying these new things and I will give them the attention deserved. I know people can change and meybee they did. But is it worth risking putting the same old, back in power again? We all know politicians will say what is neccessary to win office so when in doubt trust your insticts.

There is much in what you say. The FNM's agenda did not mesh with the people's agenda - an error that all parties seem to make, given enough time.
GOOD LUCK ..........WILL ALWAYS BE 3RD WORLD ..

Rory you say alot of things that upsets me and I don't bother responding. However, don't consider this a notable response. I am just letting you know that I wouldn't be responding to you if I can help myself. I don't beleive in arguing back and forth like fools. You are indeed an waste of time!!! :realmad:

Maybe yes, maybe no. Who can tell what the future will bring. Who can tell what twists of fate might happen. But I can tell you this, if we keep thinking and acting 3rd World then that is what we will be.

The best statement of this entire thread.
One of which many need to take note.

Thanks Bahmia, we need to change our thinking - FAST!
We need to stop all the negative talk. It has been written, "As a man thinks, so he is." I can add, "as a nation thinks - so it is!" Criticism? That is OK but provide a solution as well, also work towards that solution. To often we like to "belly ache" and that is all we do!!!! I am as guilty as anyone else, but that must change.

12play 02-17-04, - 07:20 PM There has been much debate recently about Brent Symonette the member of parliament for Montagu area and his bid for leadership of the opposition Free National Movement (FNM). The debate has not been geared towards his leadership skills which has been proven to be very successful in recent elections but the it has been geared towards the fact the Mr Symonette is a “white Bahamian” and if it is right for a “white Bahamian” to lead a black nation such as the Bahamas.
The questions are:
- Should 'Race' play a role in leadership?
- Would you elect Brent Symonette as Prime Minister?
- Do you think that the PLP Government fear the possibility of Brent Symonette becoming leader of the FNM party?
Please post your thoughts on this issue.I had no idea that we had elections for Prime Minister. Am I the only one who is in the dark here? Maybe we should have direct elections for PM since that is what Bahamians seem to want anyway
The Watcher 02-17-04, - 08:02 PM It is highly unlikely that I would vote for or support a white political leader. ..
I am not a racist, but I have frequently been exposed to situations where I was able to observe the way many whites operate when it comes to blacks.
Whites promote themselves & their kind..they support themselves & their kind, they extend greater opportunities to themselves & their kind while offering blacks token positions in their establishments so as to appear impartial.
Take a good look around this country, you don't see whites at the gas pumps, as bank tellers, as packing boys or sales reps & its not because they're in the minority. Only select blacks are invited to barbeques or dinner parties on the Eastern Road. I can go on & on. Whether or not we choose to admit it, racism is a silent killer in our communities & we are a country of silent division.
There is no question that whites run this country as they do the government. They continue to use their influence to stagnate the economic success & growth of many blacks & in most instances have used our own people to do so.
However we must give them credit for smarts & shrewdness. If after 25 years of PLP, another 10 of FNM & now another 5 of PLP & we are still on the losing end of the economic pie with the white man still pulling our strings, us blacks must not be too smart eh?
NO, I WILL NOT VOTE WHITE...I know from where we came, I know where we are attemtping to go & trust me on this one..with a white man at the helm we will never get there.

Explain? Give a situation, time or event.

Come on!
Some of the most weathiest people in this country are black.

Leaders are leaders Watcher. No matter what skin color I will stand by anyone who supports my views (white or black).
You call yourself the Watcher. I wonder what you are watching!! At one time Blacks fought to be bank tellers. Now they are not only tellers but Bank Managers as well. I know a number of white sales reps, and a young white lad packed my groceries a few months ago. As for no whites pumping gas? I dont know about that. The station where I get my gas is owned by a Black man.
As for whites promoting themselves and their "kind." Have you every heard of the NAACP? Or the Ebony awards? Have you every watched ZNS? It is nothing but promotion of Black folks.
As for "Only select blacks are invited to barbeques or dinner parties on the Eastern Road." You are right there. White folks tend to invite people who know how to conduct themselves in public. I was at a dinner party last night at a "White Knight's" home. There were four Black couples and five White couples there.
As for saying, ".....we are still on the losing end of the economic pie with the white man still pulling our strings, us blacks must not be too smart eh?" The only folks on the losing end of the economic pie are losers! (There are black ones and white ones.) As for Blacks not being too smart - tell that to the Black Bank managers, Doctors, Lawyers, Business men and the many other professions and services in which Blacks excel. Keep watching - you are missing a lot.
