Job opening: Association for Professional Communications (APC) - Information Coordinator
(www.apc.org)

APC has an opening for an information coordinator to manage our Spanish and
English newsletters and websites and establish a new APC site and
newsletter in French. Excellent English writing and editing skills and good
writing skills in Spanish and French are required. Excellent writing and
editing skills in all three languages would be an added advantage. A keen
eye for quality control is essential.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the use of internet and
other communication and information technologies for social justice and
sustainable development.

Our readers are intensely interested in finding how information and
communication technologies (ICT) impact positively and negatively in the
societies in which they live. We can help them by publishing articles that
encourage critical thinking and that profiles the innovative and
community-based work within "social techie" network of APC members,
programmes and partners around the world.

Nature of employment: Full time, one year contract following a three-month
probationary period.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
================
The candidate must:

* have advanced editorial, writing and communications expertise. Website
management is a definite advantage
* at least 3 years experience of working in media or communications
* have excellent English writing, reading and spoken skills
* a background in editing is an advantage
* have very good French and Spanish writing and reading skills
* be able to work independently and self-organise
* feel very comfortable working almost exclusively in an 'online'
environment, including a thorough knowledge of communicating via email,
mailing lists, etc

Additional desirable qualities we are looking for include:
* experience working on multilingual websites
* familiarity with the needs of a multilingual online readership
* background knowledge of and experience in APC's areas of work


TASKS
=====
The tasks of the Communications and Information Coordinator position will
include:

COORDINATION OF WWW.APC.ORG
===========================
More than one million pages are viewed on the APC website each month by
visitors from over 100 countries. The site focuses on internet and ICTs for
social justice and sustainable development. It is due for a redesign by the
end of 2006. We also plan a new website in French. The coordinator's tasks
will include:

* Coordination of the current websites (in English and Latin American Spanish)
* Production of the APC website in French in early 2006

COORDINATION OF SPANISH AND FRENCH NEWSLETTER PRODUCTION
========================================================
Much of the content that makes www.apc.org of current interest is produced
for APC's monthly newsletters (APCNews in English and APCNoticias in
Spanish). The news primarily originates with APC members around the world
and APC projects and programmes. You will work closely
with the APCNews editor(s) who produce most of the original content, to
introduce a new version in French. Your role will be to:

* Edit news articles received originally in Spanish or French from APC members
* Revise French and Spanish translations of APCNews content to ensure
fidelity to original text
* Research French- and Spanish-language resources and others for the
newsletters and website

MANAGEMENT OF APC'S MULTLINGUAL CONTENT PRODUCTION

Our websites and newsletters are produced in English and Latin American
Spanish. You will help us introduce French. APC has focused in recent years
on ensuring that both our original and translated content is of excellent
quality. You will work with the APC communications manager to develop
standards and ensure all APC-produced content adheres to the standards.
Your tasks will include:

* Quality control of content presentation in APC publications and websites
* Edit French and Spanish translations of APC-produced content for the
website and newsletters to ensure quality and semantic fidelity
* Ensuring APC language guidelines and policies are up-to-date and followed
* Administrative coordination of our team of professional freelance
translators and editors
* Periodic updating of writing guides and tools to be used by APC staff
* Occasional English-language editing and proofreading of articles and reports

MEDIA AND PROMOTIONS SUPPORT

In addition to your primary tasks, you will provide occasional support to
the APC communications, media and promotions manager in discrete tasks, for
example:

* Implement selected areas of APC media and promotions strategies
* Manage production of specific products (e.g. CD-ROMs, publications, posters)
* Logistical/promotions support at events


ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
============================
The coordinator will report to APC's communications, media and promotions
manager and will work on a day-to-day basis with the APC management team,
staff and members. Most of the work will take place in online discussion
spaces, email groups and mailing lists.


REMUNERATION/WORKING CONDITIONS
===============================
The remuneration for this position is negotiable depending on skills,
qualifications and experience.

The successful applicant is expected to provide his or her own computer,
have easy access to an internet connection, and work during normal office
hours. Reimbursement for office supplies and communication costs will be
covered by the APC. While much of the communications work will take place
online, some travel to meetings, conferences and workshops, is expected.
