The average smoker smokes 3 packs a day.

This can't be right. 3 packs a day? I used to smoke heavily and I only could get through 2 a day, and it hurt.

Depending on your definition of 'smoker' (occasional, social, light or heavy) I think the better average is around 1½ a day, unless you're taking the 3 packs from some survey or something.

Still 1½ packs is enough to kill you and those close to you as well, so I agree with the rest of your statements in this post.

Heaven help us if 3 packs is the real average! :rip:

Yes, Tar is quite a natural and bio-degradable compound. Formaldehyde, arsenic, benzine and cyanide. The average smoker smokes 3 packs a day. The amount of tar has decreased over the years from 65mg to 11mg per cigarette. 20 per pack. Means 220mg of tar per day. And let's say this is only done for 300 days of the year to adjust for days when a person only smokes 2 packs. 66000mg of tar per year. 66 grams of tar. Lets say that there are only 80 million smokers worldwide. 5.3 billion grams of tar is poisoning the earth every year.

People don't use bleach every day.

So you are saying they add tar to the leaves before they are turned into cigarettes. I don't know I am asking. I know tar is used as a binder in charcoal briquets.

What I am saying is if you are going to stop people from smoking because of pollution then you must stop people from burning fossil fuels as well.

I don't know why anybody would add arsenic or cyanide to something people ingested.

I don't disagree that we should stop using fossil fuels. But fossil fuels serve a purpose. And we are specifically talking about cigarettes as a luxury, or to be more accurate, an addiction. If we stop using fossil fuels today, the world's economic stability would be in jeopardy. If people stopped smoking cigarettes the world would be a better place.

Perhaps not the world, but certainly the individual.

I work with cyanide I know about it. But these additives are so small in cigarettes its less of a worry than bleach. When you handel bleach you absorb it through your skin. There is also trace amounts of cyanide in apples.
and other stuff we eat.

almonds, millet sprouts, lima beans, soy, spinach, bamboo shoots, and cassava roots

Yeah I know it's in a lot of food....especially cassava....but cigarettes are the leading source of cyanide intake by humans. Imagine a person who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day...and the amount of cyanide isn't that miniscule as you make it seem Vicky.
AND IT'S DEFINITELY NOT NATURAL LIKE BURNING WOOD OR LEAVES!

How about insecticide on fruit.

I don't disagree with you about smoking I avoid hanging around people that smoke. But it is their right as long as we non smokers pollute in other ways. If we tell someone outside to put out their cigarette because of pollution as we start our car we are hypocrites. Smoking is part of the economy as well, many people earn money in the sale and production of cigarettes and the things used to ignite them.

Just a thought people should not burn incense either.

If there was enough cyanide in cigarttes to kill there would be no smokers.
It is the amount of cyanide that kills, as the human body can take it in and break it down and dispose of it.

How about insecticide on fruit?? Insecticide contains arsenic and cyanide??

Pollution is only part of the problem involved with cigarette smoking. Cigarettes kill humans as well as the atmosphere. I object to smoking mainly because active and passove smoking kills. That is a pretty dangerous luxury without any benefit to society.

Cigarettes are a part of the economy like crack is. Acid or marijauna.

cigerrettes are bad for the smoker, and ofcourse if they live with someone else, that person also. But vehicle emmisions is the real problem for the earth, there is no comparison.

While you mention insecticide, check out those large bug sprayers when you go in supervalue next time, they let them off at night, right over the veggies

Ever listen to Jim Rome, he is a sports talk radio/tv personality who did a bit on a Russian lady who smokes cigarettes as a living, to test their quality. Russian cigarettes have more tar in it and they have no filter.

How many people died from cancer causing cigarettes in 2004?? About 90,000 -- not including cancer caused by asbestos and other cases. Now, how many people died from skin cancer caused by vehicle emissions in 2004??

umm you were mentioning cigerrettes dangering the earth ... i said, emissions is the real issue ... no one will deny cigerettes is bad for your health ... so is grass, cigars, alchohol, and sugar containing foods like chocolate.

90,000, darn, thats alot of dead bahamians, whats our population now then??

A for vehicle emmissions, much more deadly consequences than skin cancer.

Good, but vehicles are WAY more necessary than cigarettes, wouldn't you agree? And we mostly live on small islands where all the sea breezes would clean up those emissions rather quickly. (At least I hope so).

And if everybody were to stop smoking, maybe the cigarette manufacturers could go into an industry that is more health promoting, like health foods, for instance!

Hey Rory, do you know if all the food stores spray that stuff near the veggies at nights? Right now, I get most of my veggies from City Markets.
