Thank you for the explanation. I hadn't realized that it required a person to be here for generations to be a conchie joe. My children are mixed and they look more white than black. Would they be considered as "conchie joe"? I'm Bahamian (umpteen generations) and black and my husband is a white American.

depends...
there is such a thing as black conchie joe
and kahki coloured...

Eventhough we are greatly influenced by America when it comes to race, the Bahamas perceives colour completely different from Americans...
Americans would say that there are no white persons living in the Bahamas, as our conchie joes have a tinge of black in them....however, we look at colour as whatever you appear to be, you are obviously that...
That is why we have black conchie joes in the Bahamas and white conchie joes.
Colour is subjective in the Bahamas. There are some people living here who have no idea what colour they are...All they now do is identify with whomever they feel most comfortable with.

Note that in the Bahamas there aren't any cenus based on race.

In all my years, I've never heard of a black conchie joe :) Give me an example of a person who might be considered as a white conchie joe and a black conchie joe. Hopefully I'll know them. (I'm learning here)

The strange thing about race in the Bahamas is, you are what you appear to be. If you look Black, you are. If you look White, you are. The truth is that there are few, if any White Bahamian families that cannot claim a Black relative somewhere in their family tree.

So, I think you are right. There is no such thing as a "Black" looking Conchie Joe. A Conchie Joe would be a White looking person, with long, deep, ties of blood to the Bahamas. i.e. he has some Black blood coursing through his veins.

At one time this was a condescending term used by some Europeans to describe the local Whites, whom the Europeans did not consider truly White at all. Happily, we now wear that label with pride!

a black conchie joe would be a white/black person whose entire family seem to be white however due to some reason, the long ago black genes comes out strong within them:making them either having really 'hard hair," or possessing a permanent tan, broad nose etc.

Most long island people are black conchie joe, where as Spanish Wells are conchie joe and white conchie joe, are blond haired blue eyed white Bahamians who usually mix with Canadians....

Inagua has a mixture of all the different sects of conchie joes.

White, conchie joe, black conchie joe, long island red, khaki and black...
then there are: mango skin, red, brown, black, jet black, blue black, and blurple!

I thought lobster pink was the colour of tourists when they are on their way home from a vacation in the Bahamas?

Maybe that's radioactive red...

radioactive red only happens if they vacation in Andros or Eleuthera...

There could be a number of reasons: Filling out a form that requires "race." When describing some to someone else. For police identification.(It always makes me laugh when the police put out a description of a wanted man "He is dark skinned, black hair and black eyes." That covers about 99% of the population.)

"God" made five major racial groups: caucasoid, negroid. mongoloid, amer-indian and australoid. We are all different color flowers growing in the same garden. I dislike it when people say they don't check about race. I know they mean well but when one thinks about it all those races, and more, are here. We should be proud to call ourselves what we are and to let others know as well - if they should ask.

No. If we treated people with the respect they deserve that is the only language one needs.

Based on my research, Europeans and their decedents (Caucasian Americans) are the starters and propagators of the idea of race. What happens if someone from one area of the world has offsprings with someone else in another part of the world with different traits. Their offspring is biracial? Rubbish…
