jahbless 08-09-05, - 12:18 PM I wonder if I am the only one who feels that these insurance companies are total rip-offs. Especially when it comes to vehicular insurance coverage...rather it may be a matter of poor legislation, allowing them to manipulate the average consumer and free him up of his hard earned funds. They might as well travel with guns in their briefcases.
Can someone please explain to me why we allow the following practice to continue in this land: For example; Someone runs into your vehicle, you call the police, they do their investigation and determine that the other driver is at fault. You contact your insurance company and give them the report from the police. Your insurance company in turn gives the other driver's insurance company the police report and requests payment from the quotes you had to get, to have your vehicle fixed.
:hot: Here comes the good part, the other driver's insurance company says that they cannot pay you because this driver has not reported the accident to them!!!!!! Not reported it to them?! They have the police report :cop: , indicating the matter was investigated and evaluated by the police! Their client is subsequently charged by the traffic dept. Yet you cannot get paid to fix your vehicle, this is ridiculous! ludicrous! You now have to let your insurance company fix your vehicle and your premium now skyrockets the next term. How do we let these pple get away with this stuff???? :hot:

I don't think they are a rip-off, I think they are in business to take in money but they don't like to pay it out.
I had an accident about three years ago. The police came out and did their thing and in two weeks they made the determination that the other guy was at fault. I got the police report, gave a copy to my insurance company and a copy to his insurance company. And just like you say Jahbless, his company told me that they could not pay as he had not reported the accident. "Well," I said, "Maybe you should contact him! Because if I have to rent a car that is only going to cost you more." They did contact him. About a week later I had a cheque in my hands.
So, it took about a month to get the matter cleared up. That is too long but at least it was done. I was lucky, I could afford to get my own car fixed and pay for it out of my own pocket. The cheque from his insurance company reimbursed me. But what about folks who can't afford to shell out $3000.00 up front? What if the insurance company had not contacted him? You are right the insurance business in the Bahamas needs a shake up! So do our laws!
Many,.many years ago I guy crashed into my car. It turned out that he did not have a licence or insurance. The matter went to court. He lost, or did he? The damage to my car, plus court costs came to 250 pounds (We use pounds in those days) The judge order him to pay me back at the rate of one pound a year! 1 pound x 250 = 250 years it would have taken him to clear the judgement!!!! He paid the first pound and I never saw him, or any of the other money, again! If he is still alive and reading this, where is my one pound for this year? :)

plus interest and penalties! Can't he be arrested for default on a judgement?

If he could have been found but I would think that The Statute of Limitations has long past. But to tell you the truth I did not expect him to pay up.
Insurance companies have been pretty good to me :-) Its the lame Road Traffic non existant investigations that are the real problem, and ofcourse the drivers.
Actually, a few years back a driver was high, had no drivers license or insurance, car wasnt licensed or insured, and it wasnt his car, he hit me, and kept going, was stopped later down the road by the cops. They did no investigation, there were no brake marks as he kept going, he had hit me doing at least 100mph, ran straight through my little jap car splitting it in 2, luckily only me one and it was a right hand drive, and had a seat belt on. I was charged for it, cause i turned in front of him they claimed, end of story. Either way, he had no insurance and never got charged, regardless it was a write off and my insurance company had to pay for it.
The latest accident, my insurance paid for it all, comprehensive ... involved no other car, just a wacked out steering. So it goes up a couple hundred, it was double what im paying now, just 4 years ago when i first got the vehicle, comprehensive is worth it on this island, especially when the road traffic dept dont do their jobs.
bahmaboy 08-10-05, - 12:12 AM the jokey thing about insurence companies is we all piss and moan about them. but oh when we get in an accident, first thing we be like is "thank god i have insurence."

To tell the truth, If you didn't need it to be on the road nowadays, I sometimes think about doing without it....and being messed up like the rest of them who get away with all kinda foolishness. I think were having a negative paradime shift in this nation. People ar'nt honest anymore and too much pple are just all about what they can get for themselves, legally or not. No one wants to do an honest days work for a days pay....they need to be tipped to do what we're paying them to do.........we have alot of work to do!

yeah i hear you. i dont have full coverage, just liability. i have the minum alllowed by law. i dont know what the laws are in the bahamas on driving with out insurence, but over here its a big no no and its cheaper in the long run to have the minimum by law.
on the tip thing: i never got that you know, in my opinion a person should not be tipped for doing their jobs (i am sure persons that recieve tips would dis agree). when i was 18 i worked a job where we got tips but i never depended on them or expected to get tipped. if i got it that was fine and i wouldnt refuse, but if i didnt get one i didnt get all heated at the customer the way i saw others did. one time me and a friend got in a heated row becuase i refused to leave a tip at olive garden. i was like baby girl gets paid to bring my plate to me, i paid her by patronizing her establishment. now if she wants more go get a job that pays more otr make your bosses up the pay check.

Alot of restaurants in the US pay their staff $1 an hour or something small like that, so what they make is based on tips, a average sallary was $60 a week. I worked in 2 restaurants in NY and i never even got a sallary, just lived off tips .. thats just how its done at least up north.

yeah i know that. where i am restaurant folks get something like 3.50 an hour. my point is if the pay your r getting paid to do your job isnt enough, go and get something that does pay enough. either that or lobby to get your sector paid more. something other than expect payin customers to tip you.
the reason why they arent lobbying for more money is becuase they rake in a butt load of kachingas at the end of the week. usually more than if they were geting paid say 7 an hr. well all of that is fine with me, my problem comes in when you as a customer is expected or obligated to tip someone for doing the job they signed up for knowing full well what the job was paying.
so now i do tip but not all the time and its never more than $3.50

no you arent getting it, those jobs, at least up north, dont get a salary, they make their living off tips. They get paid $1 an hour, which, hmmm, 15 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week, its not a salary, its only for tax reasons. I used to make an easy $1000 a week off tips, thats why people do that work. Trust me, its no fun. Basically you dont get a salary, you work off tips and thats what you are told before you start the job. Simply, you dont eat in at a restaurant if you cant afford a tip, just get take out. :-) Thats what i do even in the bAhamas.

Sounds like I need one of those jobs man.....!

I feel insurance companies hate to pay out big money even though people pay their premiums on time. It's so funny when they change the reason why you pay for insurance in the first place:raw: So quick to point out that life insurance is so complicated:dgi: Can someone please explain why they try to run circles around pay out time! Why deny claims when you receive money over long periods but when the tables turn it's excuses a nice word to say :liar:
