View Full Version : Terrorists at C.O.B?
canewry 08-31-05, - 07:30 AM Did anyone read yesterday's Tribune concerning COB's lecturers threatening to strike, asking for the entire COB counsel to reside over the Dr. Smith feasco? If this threat of terror isn't terrorist/treason, I do not know what is? The Bahamas needs to be up in arms, COBUS needs to be up in arms, Bahamian students need to be up in arms, protesting, this evil thought, this terrific wickedness!
It is clear that these Lecturers are educational terrorist and their objective is clearly to put the country at a stand still.

But I do agree, he is bold to be complaining about his due process...I conclude that he takes Bahamians for light!
lynette 08-31-05, - 02:37 PM and according to Frankie Wilson he got $140 plus they offered him a consultant job that the PM knocked down so he got an additional $156 and he gets to stay in his rented home for another year and his insurance paid for another year and the use of the government car for 12 weeks...what more does he want? :what:
If the teachers are talking strike for him then I hope he shares what he getting with them.
Now if they talking strike because of the old long standing problems that COB cant seem to solve...that is another story..and about time.
lynette 08-31-05, - 02:54 PM :shaky: I dont know the author but he makes alot of sense.....

canewry 08-31-05, - 06:33 PM An unfortunate situation
It is unfortunate that Dr. Rodney Smith had to wait to be asked to resign the presidency of the College of The Bahamas. As a practitioner in the highest echelons of academia he should be fully aware that in such situations convention dictates the route, which should be taken.
It is unfortunate because the day that Dr. Smith admitted he had knowingly used material authored by Dr. John Sexton of New York University, without acknowledging that fact, was the day he should have tendered his resignation. Because even though he said that Dr. Sexton advised him by e-mail of the availability of the speech on the Internet and it being public knowledge, that was after the fact and cannot excused what was done.
Dr. Smith spoke at the COB Honours Convocation on May 15 using lengthy paragraphs of Dr. Sexton's material as though it was his own work and admitted to having plagiarised Dr. Sexton's work only after it was brought to his attention that he had not given credit to the author.
He did not resign until Aug. 4 when the report from the Council appointed panel was imminent and after he had been given the choice of resigning or being terminated.
It is now time to make public the recommendations of that five-member advisory panel which was responsible for investigating the plagiarism charges and what was the determination. No doubt the panel would have looked into all the facts, including having talks with Dr. Sexton with regards to whether a person with Dr. Smith's position in academia was free to use that material without acknowledging the source.
The costs of the panel during the course of its investigations were borne by the public and therefore it is the publicās right to know.
And if there is truth to the assertions allegedly made by Dr. Smith that it would take at least 10 years for COB to achieve university status, then he is guilty of deceiving the Council, the Government, the staff and faculty who still religiously hold fast to him, and every Bahamian with the belief that the College could be a university by 2007.
Dr. Smith demonstrated on Monday that he has no regard for authority when he did not seek permission or inform the College's Acting President of a meeting in the school's auditorium where he told staff and faculty members of the Council's decision. That should not have happened, it cannot be seen favourably in any light and every right thinking Bahamian should condemn it.

I am trying to find the story now, but in an interview Dr. Smith gave a statement to say exactly why he was upset. It was in part due to the fact that he communicated with the person he plagiarized via e-mail and was given permission to use the statements. Granted, this was after the debacle I believe. His point was that regardless of the timeline, he was given permission. This in his book means that he committed no crime.

I remember that trick...
When I was young I used to take .50 cents out of my mothers purse to purchase candy. I knew it was stealing, so right before she entered her purse, I use to ask her if I can have .50 cents, so she wouldn't realized that I was in her purse without permission. But guess what, as I look back at it, even after the post permission, it was still stealing.... Dr. Smith needs to stop manipulating the Bahamian public, and own up to his mistake...He already had acknowledged that he had plagiarized, now he is trying to justify it.

Depends upon how you look at it...If it were a crime, he would have been arrested and sentenced, or at least fine...however, if you look at it as an academic sin, surely he did just that, consequently he needs to confess his sins, and wait for the judgement.
finekameo 09-01-05, - 11:57 AM Read this article. This is the statement that Dr. Smith gave regarding the situation. Don't get me wrong, I agree that was he did was kinda shady and he should resign out of common decency. I also understand his situation and irritation as to how the matter was handled.

Maybe he should not have been in the academic world, then we really would be sure that he had no academic sins to confess!
