You aren't suggesting 'some sort of legal union' -- anyone serious about such a thing wouldn't refer to it so trivially as 'some sort of legal union'. Such a thing would be definitive and completely secular because what you seek are the civil liberties awarded by the state. Marriage isn't awarded or defined by the state, it is sanctioned by the state -- which I also will admit is ridiculous. Marriage by definition is discriminatory, as are the words 'female' and 'male'.
