finekameo 09-07-05, - 04:32 PM It is nice to have those conveniences at home if you can't always travel. But I agree with Moon here. What is the point in going to that country at all if it is a clone of your home? I like the little hole in the wall coffee shops too, because you get a real taste of the country and the culture from the people you meet in there.
Vicky 09-07-05, - 08:11 PM Am I the only personally slightly disturbed with the opening of yet another symbol of American capitalism on Bahamian soil??? I was made aware yesterday that now we have a STARBUCKS on PI! As far as I know, we arent even (traditionally) a coffee drinking nation! However, my friends will tell you, I for starters LOVE coffee...can't survive without it..but it bothers me, the amount of starbucks popping up all over the globe! it takes something away from your cozy local cafe, when there is this huge, overrated coffee store, mass producing 300 calorie coffee! indeed i wonder how the company will survive in nassau, where many do not even drink coffee! or is that why its on PI?
Personally, i think we are becoming far too americanised/commercialised, far too quickly, and quite frankly, i am quite tired of trying to defend nassau, when discussing it with people who have been there...we are seen as nothing more than an extension on florida, and thats sad.
:bahamas:
I like http://www.timhortons.com/ my family are a bunch of coffee guts as we used to say.

LOL...this is so funny to me for some reason. I know some people would let a friend buy things like a computer, tv, or other expensive item especially electronics...but even down to the coffee?? I guess when you want something really bad...

Strange, I would think the other way round! :)

bahmaboy 09-08-05, - 01:08 AM i for one was very excited by starbucks and johhny rockets coming to nassau. to those who have doubts starbucks will survive, truss they will...... thats why it is on PI. dont think for a minute they came to make money off of bahamians. i cant speak for johnny rockets cuase its only a regional chain but they are on royal carribean ships and seem to be doin well.
tenial, walmart has been in nassau for about 3 yrs now. wake up baby booo that red strip along solomans floors. those bags they hand out, and the big slogan "always low prices always" didnt that ring a bell
i am also excited by the thought of a real walmart in freeport.
this is very intresting:http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/1857.htm
accourding to the american government FTAA IS going to be a reality in the bahamas along with tax reform
so yall dont have to search that entire link here the quote:
"Economic challenges facing the Bahamas include meeting continued employment demands, jumpstarting a lagging privatization process, and monitoring increasing levels of government debt. Another major challenge for Bahamians will be to prepare for hemispheric free trade. Currently, Bahamians do not pay income or sales taxes. Most government revenue is derived from high tariffs and import fees. Reduction of trade barriers will probably require some form of taxation to replace revenues when the country becomes a part of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). As evident by domestic opposition to the Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME), the advantages of free trade may be hard for the government to sell."
Teniel 09-08-05, - 02:51 AM Bahmaboy:
I am in no way excited or enthused about additional American franchises, particularly Wal Mart setting foot on our soil. I would hope that the government stomp out any such move, or at least enough concerned citizens protest these establishments. First of all we dont need to further dilute our Bahamian character with an American one (and dont start that crap about we is the same). If we dont try to hold unto some semblance of our Bahamian and Caribbean culture, what incentive will tourist want to visit our shores. If they can stay their behind in Florida at a much cheaper rate. If we continue this trend, in a couple of years we will be digging for a cultural identity out of our a$$e$. Secondly places like Walmart, particularly those Super Centers, can eventually put smaller businesses and franchises out of business, since Wal mart sells almost everything. Thirdly why the hell would the government want to turn Freeport into another Dade County or Miami shopping strip. Do we as a people lack that much direction and identity.
Abiskan Moon-Angel 09-08-05, - 03:41 AM :what: :what: WALMART TOO???? oh lord! BB, im sorry i totally agree with teniel on this one! i dont know what johnny rockets is, but im telling you guys...bahamas already looks/is soooo americanised...now we even have their ultra-cheap/low-quality/sub-fashionable walmart!?!?!? lord help!
