canewry 09-08-05, - 02:03 PM One should ask: Should Americans expect the comforts of home here, be it fast food restaurants, or should they be forced to go to bamboo shack? Also, what the Bahamas would be without Burger King, McDonalds or Ketucky would we be better off? What about these 5 star restaurant chains that Atlantis is encouraging, should that be stop? What about these international stores and boutiques...should they be allowed?
Teniel 09-08-05, - 02:42 PM We been given up our Bahamian identity and traditions all over the place in the name of 'progress'. I just want my clapboard house, shingle roof and outside toilet back if we can get rid of all this so-called 'progress'.
Outside terlet. No boss, I don tink so. Les not get carried away nah. I like my privacy when I doing da do! :D
Teniel 09-08-05, - 02:47 PM PS. same could be said for Canada .. arent they now too americanised?
Pretty much, at least the larger metropolitan cities like Toronto, and Vancouver, except for maybe Montreal (they have hung on to their French flavour nicely). But Canadians abhor the Americanization of their small towns and cities just like alot of Bahamians I feel, would be about the out islands becoming Americanized.
I reside in a small University town and they have been protesting the establishment of a Walmart for years. Their resistance was recently overturned, but the residents are now taking it to a higher court for appeal. They are also concerned about loosing the character of their city, and aligning so much of it to that of a US city.

They should at least be open to a different cultural experience, which alot of them are. I think we would be better off with alot less Fast Food establishments (particularly Burger King). Bahamian Food, though just as greasy sometimes, taste so much more good :D I ain given up my conch salad, stewfish, crack conch, chicken in da bag for no double whopper. If these 5 star resturant chains arent at least featuring Bahamian food as 30% of their menu, then yes they should be stopped. As for the international stores and boutiques, they shouldnt be stopped, but their numbers shouild be in moderation. We dont need a million and one Tommy Hilfiger stores and Guess boutiques, particularly at those ridiculous prices.
Teniel 09-08-05, - 02:57 PM To Bahmaboy:
If you are spoiled by the convenience of Walmart and other jumbo franchises in the states that is fine, but I am not that spoiled to want to alter the identity and character of my country. I'll hop on a plane to Florida first, and then come back to some island peace and quiet (relatively speaking). I have been in N. America log enough to realize, it aint all it cut out to be.
Abiskan Moon-Angel 09-08-05, - 03:08 PM Alot of tourists (particularly North American tourists) that I have spoken to, abhor destinations whose atmosphere and experience is so similar to what they can find in their own backyard.
the first time my boyfriend made a trip to the bahamas, he only visited nassau. he wasnt very impressed. like these people teniel are talking about, he thought...this doesnt feel 'caribbean'/west indian. his second trip we went to Eleuthera/Harbour Island and he abosolutely loved it. When his parents come next year, we gon ship them straight directly to the island!
the point is, we dont have to be backward or hick to retain our culture and our image of a quaint tourist destination. fact is, there will soon be no point in coming the nassau if it looks like south florida (not in terms of infrastructure, but shopping, eating, clubbing). look at turks for example, to my knowledge their govt is very strict on fast food franchises, and TRUST, there ARE people lining up to go there! it just pisses me off when i always have to 'prove' to my caribbean friends that we are a west indian nation with our own culture and not 'lil america', as they all seem to think!
Abiskan Moon-Angel 09-08-05, - 03:10 PM DAMN teniel! you on fire! :shaky:
it is nice to walk into a store an buy everything you need at rock bottom prices though ... heck even Sears is cheap compared to nAssau. I hadnt been to the US in 8 years when i went last year for 3 days, and shopping was even better than i remembered ... course it cost some $300 to get there and more to stay in a hotel and rent a car. I know im no f reak for Walmart or any of those stores, but would be nice to be able to get a decent meal 24 hours a day ... which doesnt exist in nAssau.
If a tourist really wants to get away from it all then they need to goto an outisland, and go naked.. leave their everyday clothes behind and cover up with some palm leaves when they arrive .. and forget toilets, they need to go in da bush and wipe their but with some leaves :shaky:
bahmaboy 09-08-05, - 04:54 PM people still forget that fact that if an american wants to experiance out island peace and tranquility they have the keys for that and many parts of hawaii. I am all for the preservation of bahamian culture in SOME parts of the bahamas but the fact is this is 2005 and people NEED cities. we need malls, the internet, boojy restaurants, places to go and things to do. If bahamians were SOOOO concerned about culture preservation, why do so many live in nassau, back up the streets towin mcd's drive throughs, filling tommy hifiger up so much some times they have to lock the door to stem the flow of customers.
sleepy little islands are fine for a while but comon can yall honestly spend 95% of ur time on them?
