They should at least be open to a different cultural experience, which alot of them are. I think we would be better off with alot less Fast Food establishments (particularly Burger King). Bahamian Food, though just as greasy sometimes, taste so much more good :D I ain given up my conch salad, stewfish, crack conch, chicken in da bag for no double whopper. If these 5 star resturant chains arent at least featuring Bahamian food as 30% of their menu, then yes they should be stopped. As for the international stores and boutiques, they shouldnt be stopped, but their numbers shouild be in moderation. We dont need a million and one Tommy Hilfiger stores and Guess boutiques, particularly at those ridiculous prices.
Plus Bambo Shack will full you better than BK any day.

Let them drink coffee... :friday:
the truth is, that we have just as much english influence and american influence just as much as negro black influence!!

it is what makes us different if you can beleive that!!

either which way...let entrepenuers be what they are.....

Yk you have a point, I fer that.

To Bamaboy -- I mean that it is better for us to be influenced by the US, than to adopt the way of life and customs of the illegals within our midst. Some believe there are already almost as much of them here as there are Bahamians. If that's the case our culture could gradually be lost. :bye:

I'd rather **** outside and have my daughters feel safe in their own house than to have pearl toilet bowls and have my daughters afraid to go outside and enjoy the beauty of their home.

people still forget that fact that if an american wants to experiance out island peace and tranquility they have the keys for that and many parts of hawaii. I am all for the preservation of bahamian culture in SOME parts of the bahamas but the fact is this is 2005 and people NEED cities. we need malls, the internet, boojy restaurants, places to go and things to do. If bahamians were SOOOO concerned about culture preservation, why do so many live in nassau, back up the streets towin mcd's drive throughs, filling tommy hifiger up so much some times they have to lock the door to stem the flow of customers.

sleepy little islands are fine for a while but comon can yall honestly spend 95% of ur time on them?

BB, why do you view adopting an overexcessive American character and lifestyle as the only route to progress in this country. I never said that we dont need big cities like Nassau and Freeport, but we also need to preserve some quaint slower paced communites and islands in our archipelago (and quaint doesnt necessarily equate to a rural or 3rd world lifestyle). We are a tourist destination and we have to be flexible in the vacation experiences we employ to our tourists.

We need to find a balance in this country between progress (and remember progress shouldnt always be determined by US standards) and cultural perservation.

did i ever say in order to progress you must follow the USA. In order to progress you must follow who ever is doin things the common sence way in terms of that situation weather it be usa, can, uk what ever. one thing that is clear we know who not to follow if we want to progress.

n e way i agree with most of ur post. so waha say, can we please slap starbucks', six flags, mcdonalds, muvico's, massage parlors etc etc all over NP, GB, and Andros (mentioned cuase of its size)

Common Sense was never common B Boy, and we dont necessarily need to follow, but to learn and adapt things to our own enviroment, character, and culture. There needs to be a time when we stop following and start being leaders and our own trendsetters. The Bahamas doesnt need to be following any particular country azz and foot, but we can learn from their acheivements and mistakes, to make our own country a successful nation on this earth.

Once again you equate the progress of a nation to over commercialization. How is having a Walmart or a Starbucks such a big trek to progress? I would rather this nation try to reform it education system, work on improving our Bahamian tertiary level institutions eg. COB, etc. That is progress my brother!

Dont dismiss the potential and common sense of 3rd world countries. 1st world countries like the US have repeatedly fallen short in that area....Hurricane Katrina anyone.

I have a contractual obligation with the state of arkansas that doesn't expire for another 3 years.

...besides, where I live my kids can play outside for hours. Gated Community. 24 hour security guards. I have several bushes in Freeport and Grand Turk.

yes many on here have shown this to be true. learn, follow, tomato, tomato. as far as i am concerned for the most part the bahamas is a sucessful nation, thanks to the american influence of course.

the reason why i did that was becuase that is the topic at hand. of course education, diversity etc are needed for a country to progress but right now we are talking about commercialization. BTW- when fortune 500 companies want to open in your country that is a sign of progress

definatly so. i mean how many hurricanes has the USA seen and after everyone splinters everywhere. note to USA buy some concrete. well i guess they aint checkin cuase they got fema, insurence companies, and every one elses giving them billions in the end. on a side note i think the USA could definatly follow the bahamas model on children born in the country unto illegal immigrants.
