Okay a coffee shop opened on PI, its a major franchise in the US- SO WHAT! I bet there won't be a problem if another Wendy's, KFC, or McDonald's opens. All these are US based companies, but they are licensed as franchise, operated by(or fronted by) Bahamians! That's more jobs for us! They are only competing agains each other, Dunkin Donuts is not Bahamas based, so the better coffee house wins! I hope this venture is successful that way they can expand to the Cable Beach area- more jobs for us! We only have Bamboo Shack and Dirty's to call our own- and they don't sell coffee!:dancer2:

Walmart? in Freeport? Never heard of that. I know they are building a "superstore" for the Home Centre. Maybe that news got twisted in the grapevine and came out Walmart.

Why worry about Freeport-Walmart been in Nassau for years now. It goes by the name Solomon's "Super Center". Step inside and see if you can tell the difference:gi:

wwwwhhooosssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! this went RIGHT over your head! :sparky: yes Starbucks will create about 20 jobs. Yes its good to be able to get good(ish) coffee and enjoy it in a nice atmosphere. BUT is it worth it to continue americanising our country to the extent where we compromise our own culture? Is it worth it when a tiny 'caribbean' country boasts more american style coffee houses/fast food restaurants/shopping centres than bahamian? what then is the use of coming to the bahamas?! imagine going to a place like vanuatu and as soon as you step off the plane you are bombarded with australian (restuarant) chains? or american chains? imagine going halfway around the world to eat McDonalds and have coffee in Starbucks? JOKES....one Starbucks is tolerable, but two on such a tiny island (already boasting far too many fast food restos) is FAR TOO MANY! :wipe:

I Dont see a problem with it. I mean we need more jobs, as the economy is hurting bad and there are basically no jobs in the bahamas, if you go by the Government Job Center - every job is a gardner for $100 a week or a Maid.

And the tourists can visit any number of outislands to experience the Real Bahamas.

You are not the only one by any means. I am incensed by the proliferation of American fast food and other cultural exports. It bugs me that our young people and even some of our older people--are so brainwashed into living the American lie....the thoughtless, consumer lifestyle that slavishly follows every new American fad that comes along. It's in our devotion to new cars, to the clothes, the fancy phones, the over-rarted and expensive colognes--just about everything.

Not to say that we shouldn't enjoy the nice things of life if we can afford them, but we must know how to make wise choices. It's the thoughtlessness that bothers me.

What do we really know about how these cheap goods are produced? What do we know about the sweatshops where poor people, including children, work under unspeakable conditions to provide us with our chocolates and other goods that we just cant do without? What do we know about how the hamburgers and the chickens are produced? What do we know about the conditions under which animals are raised and slaughtered?

Do we know anything about the junk we are daily putting into our mouths that result in all kinds of degenerative diseases and ailments not to mention the unsightly fat that hangs off all parts of our anatomy? But the surgeons and doctors are all getting rich off cutting parts off us, so they dont mind at all!

That is why we end up with all these fresh cars and an empty pocket. That's why we own nothing; all we do is consume what others make, and look for jobs rather than saving to start our own businesses.

So--why can't we say no to some of the nonsense? Just don't buy the darn coffee!

I was on another Caribbean forum, and apparently McDonalds is closing down in Jamaica. They need to shut down all Burger Kings in Nassau, and leave just one McDonald's open (just for the little brats). The food in any event is no good.

Apparently McDonalds couldnt compete with Burger Slop er I mean King. As well they couldnt find anyone to manage the chains, so they eventually had to bail out.

rory- i hope nassau is getting a home depot

Home Depot *SUCK TEET*. B boy please.....
