I haven't said much on this topic, 'cause I've already been in Starbucks a couple times, despite my not being a coffee drinker. :D <--"da look on ya face say ya guilty"

However, I do agree that something needs to be done about the virtually uncontrolled proliferation of foreign fast food restaurants. It does "water down" we culture and ting.

On the other hand, I wonder if ya'll ga make this much noise if I was to open a CompUSA over here? Or will I have to call it CompuBahamas to be "culturally correct", despite my selling the same computer equipment and software "from the US"?

Or is that "different" somehow?

Good thing about a franchise, most of them, as far as I understand it, you get everything taken care of, as far as a full ready to go set up. Now, question, do they all get funds for advertising etc? I Imagine they get alll the literature and materials they need.

I have the same set up going through right now, If I were to bring xyz in from taiwan, i going to need a big loan, then there is the 20,000 brochures i need, plus f unds for advertising, and stocking the equipment, then comes warranty back to Taiwan.

Now, if mr BroughtItInFromTaiwantToTheUsForResaleToTheBahamas, wants to sell me the product with his name on it, even though I know the manufacturer, he is branding it, with that branding i get all the stock I need, free demos to place around town, and all the advertising i need, and I dont need to take out a loan. Mr Brou .... etc is not a local business partner, just a foreign supplier, in essence an investor.

works out good for me, and the end users get a very low priced decent product with local warranty.

Didn't Friday's Come Soon try that before. It amounts to copyright infringment (international) if you follow the same idea.

Problem is that Starbucks has many full time 'cuppers' that blend and create coffee in their 'labs'. It's a fairly involved process that, if you don't have the resources to replicate it, leaves you behind the curve. It's like trying to write a new operating system knowing that MicroSoft is the giant. It's not impossible, but it's costly. Sometimes its easier to walk down the same road someone else has defined for you...

I still don't like their coffee though!

Starbucks coffe is a good thing in the Bahamas. Sometimes, tourist needs at least one thing that they are familiar with. Speaking from personal experience, when I come to Nassau, I enjoy the food. But, I still need to pass through McDonalds to get a hash brown at some point and time. So, I would say, leave Star Bucks alone and wait and see. When they do not make it, then their doors will be closed. If they make it, you will see Starbucks for a very long time. Plus, Bahamians who travel, they love the experience of having a Starbucks there. This is a modern society and things are changing.

I would prefer to see authentically Bahamian coffee and tea cafes. Ones that would sell not only international coffees and teas, but teas that are made here locally. I am sure the last time I was home I saw an advert on locally made Bahamian teas. These establishments can provide the same ambience and the environment that Starbucks apparently provides, but with a Bahamian flavour. I am sure tourists and citizens alike would enjoy it. In fact I will add this to my list of future endeavours...God's willing.

There is another Starbucks in Palmdale.

I was there today! Just to check it out. I hear that one is going to be built in the Harbour Bay Mall as well.

Well I frequent the Sandyport area every other day, (can't say why) but haven't seen any signs of one being built or opened, but I'll keep an eye out for it!
