So I found this info online that might clarify the issue...not sure if anyone else has seen it yet but this is one account of what happened...

Meanwhile on the southern end of the island of New Providence, The Tribune reported that some 50 young women were made to stand in the hot sun for hours as punishment for wearing what were described as “gay shoes”. An unnamed source said that the shoes are Clarke’s brand that are actually unisex but the dominant culture identifies this with butch women, and being lesbian. Punishment ensued reportedly. No word on whether it is true or not. Certainly the Ministry of Education should investigate such a report. Not only would the idea of identifying shoes as gay be over the top but what about making children stand in the hot sun for punishment. The report appeared on Friday 9th September.

Did the report say anything about the schools dress code?

:dgi: While I'm sorry to hear about your parents,What does that have to do with this discussion? You brought up the issue, the least you should know is if your group was invited to respond to the Ministry Of Education on behalf of this child & her PARENTS.

My Parrents are more important to me than the Alliance and or looking into gay shoes so I can report back to you. Now understand this as soon as I get info I will post it. Just as I am sure you would as well.

That is in the members hands that is dealing with it. I do other things with in our group.

Right now I am spending a lot of my time taking care of my Mom and Dad. Dad fell last week and told no one. I did not find out until I went to bath him and saw this huge swollen bruise on his back near his waist. Mom is in Canada and Just got the news she will not be able to come back to the Bahamas because of the dialysis that she needs and all her other complications. This is what we though might happen Mom and Dad are very depressed. Seems they will have to live the rest of their lives and die separated. I am still checking into it and hoping but for now its a no go.

Sorry ta hear bout your family. Prayers out to dem!!!!!

Vicky, even though I am not gay, if you quit standing up in the face of "illogical" renting and snide bigotry dressed in scarlet of social intolerance (Christianity Bahamain style), then the Bahamas will be thrust back into our past of social ignorance and "bush bucky" reasoning! The result, we all lost the opportunity to learn how to resolve national conflicts as a thinking people!

Girl, when you think about it, the people who talk the loudest are the ones that you have pushed into a conner! Keep pushing! Sticks and stones?

We Bahamians that are comfortable in our sexuality and religious beliefs may not agree with your life style, but we damn sure won't deny you the God given and Constitutional rights to live as you see fit nor will we judge your worth as human or hold your right of expression based on your straightness!!

If you stop talking...then maybe I will Start! :bye:

Gay shoes now? Ugh, what a mess. Such ignorance from the 'supposed' establishment of learning. I have beef about the stupidity of some Bahamian teachers anyway, but this is downright sad. The embarassment brought about will not be short-term. Those girls deserve an apology. An apology they'll probably never receive.

Edit - I hope and pray that your home situation improves Vikki.

Just in. The following is an article in The Voice our online new.letter

GAY SHOES?

A member of staff speaking anonymously to the Tribune confirmed reports of female students being disciplined at C.V. Bethel High School for wearing 'gay shoes'. Apparently the girls were being reviewed by a senior teacher for possible uniform irregularities when they were told that their 'Clarks' uni-sex shoes were 'gay shoes'. The girls were then ordered to stand in the sun for an unknown period of time. Despite the complaints of concerned and angry parents two more girls were disciplined in the very same manner, the following day.
The Ministry of Education maintains that it has not received formal notice of this matter to date, and has referred inquiries to the Principal of C.V. Bethel High School; who to date has been unavailable for comments

I think the person that started this mess at CV is just plain silly. All that needed to be said is that, "Your shoes do not conform to the dress code established by the ministry of education. Take them off or go home." Simple as that and everything would have been done. They just had to go and call them "gay shoes" and stir up problems.

she should have come back at them with a better line, since the gay shoes line is old school ;) She could have turned it around if she had any sense .. i dont have nothing against gays, hetro back enders, whatever, but just she could have taken care of it herself ..

come on, i grew up in Freeport as a so called "white boy", the most racist (against whites) island in the bahamas at the time, and I was singled out all the time .. couldnt call discrimination anyways as it was the PLP regime though i never would have even thought of that, but no matter what, I never let them (the racist jamaican teachers) get away without me having the last word .. :friday:

Oh yeah, i still loved living there ;)
It sure beat the bananas air trips to the nassau ghetto :p
(which crashed one time I was on it by the way, early 80's)

what we used to say at school, gawd save nassau,
cause it needs it!

Why do you keep insisting that it was the school that called the shoes gay? FYI: They were disciplined for not being in dress code. Why are we not concerned that a group of females were allowed to leave their homes dressed in MALE shoes? SMT :taped2:

Well, if you notice, my comment came directly after and in response to what was stated in the post by Vicky. I also posted a link earlier from another source stating the same kind of comment was uttered. My entire stance so far has been targeted at the girls simply being out of uniform. It isn't my fault that someone had to utter some derogatory remark and skew the issue.

I don't think Freeport is that bad. Then again, I am black so I guess that would have something to do with it. What school did you attend out of curiosity?
