Rory 10-26-04, - 11:08 AM So Rory are you saying that our opinion does not matter? Not to me and probably not to them, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion, as its a free world. But then im not a politician.. Alien 10-26-04, - 09:51 PM im sorry to admit.. i have good freinds who are in bahamen, and they resemble nothing bahamian, or the leats but carribean!!! at least visage, stays caribean! PARA DEL NEGRA! Rory 10-27-04, - 12:33 AM still they are born in the bahamas so they are bahamians and as they are Bahamians and their band is a majority Bahamian represented band, regardless of the type of music sung, it is still a Bahamian Band.... Alien 11-20-04, - 04:08 PM still they are born in the bahamas so they are bahamians and as they are Bahamians and their band is a majority Bahamian represented band, regardless of the type of music sung, it is still a Bahamian Band.... you would promote them would you!! well they are technically a bahamian band..who doesnt pay bahamian music... that is good enough..i guess! :fly: parietal_03 12-03-04, - 05:00 PM To be a successful artist, you have to do two things: ONE: Come up with something new. TWO: Convey something already done, in a different light. Bahamen did the latter. They proved that Bahamian technically proficient musicians could go "pop." Now all they have to do is fulfill their contract and then they can use the acclaim their "pop" endeavours brought them to their advantage. Also, I think the skeptics who claim "such-and-such" is not "Bahamian" seem to forget that the Bahamian society is a melting pot of cultures. Listen to "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull and then listen to a Tony McKay album. Listen to earlier Ronnie Butler/Ramblers singles "Bahama Rock", "Burma Road" and you'll hear different influences from The British Invasion to zydeco. Earlier Lenny Kravitz had Beatles-King Crimson-Hendrix vibes to them...because he decided to sing "Eleutheria" accompanied by a moog and envelope filter all of a sudden it's Jamaican? Come now people, Jamaica does not have the monopoly on the envelope filter. Reggae maybe, but not the envelope filter. People who are not musicians aren't really cognizant that bands go through eras, periods of exploration, these are the people (who I'd bet)that don't know or even care what modes and roots Fred Ferguson plays from when he does runs in a song he composes. P.S. Also I hope all those who complaining about 'who Bahamian and who aint' have all of Joseph Spence and Cousin' Israel Forbes's CDs. dju 12-09-04, - 04:56 AM To be honest I feel there are too many that are trying to get over with the tourists instead of just being proud of the heritage and knowing that you have something special and truely amazing. Be proud and stand tall and know that there are people that wish we had what you have. The grass is not greener on the other side trust me. Ring of Fire 02-23-05, - 11:59 PM :uk: What bahamians don't understand is that they are doing what's getting them paid. Lets be real about this, if making 'corny music' is going to get my songs played on motion pictures and pay me well why not? but then again, i prefer our original bahamen, i feel that as bahamians we dont support our own, and when they make it big, we like to critize them like we were there for them in the first place thats my 5 cents so to speak BahKenya 10-12-05, - 02:49 PM Bahamen are very much Bahamian. They are now away working and making money, this is their right. If you have the opportunity to go abroad and make money, that is what we expect you to do. Before who let the Dogs out, did anyone ever talk of Bahamen. Please Bahamian people, Do not hate the players, just hate the game. Bahamen you are the "BEST" Go Moe, beat that Drum. lynette 10-13-05, - 07:05 PM [QUOTE=cvm] Of course Bahamen is Bahamian. Any music played and recorded by a Bahamian is Bahamian. Its as simple as that. The Bahamas is a melting pot of culture...I am sure that each time the culture 'morphed' it was met with resistance from those who were use to the way it was. Its just evolution. They saw that they could make money doing it another way and they did. They have talent. Leave it at that. How many other 'traditional' bahamian songs are played in movies seen around the world? Very few.:uh: How many other 'traditional' bahamain songs are played at sports arenas around the world? None...:uh: Nough said:shaky: RockWell 10-14-05, - 12:29 PM :dgi: So singing Rake & Scrape makes you Bahamian? Fred 12-14-05, - 03:31 AM [QUOTE=cvm] Of course Bahamen is Bahamian. Any music played and recorded by a Bahamian is Bahamian. If this answer is true then I have a couple simple questions? If a Jamaican or Japanese artist records a Junkanoo, or Rake 'N Scrape song, would you call it Jamaican or Japanese music? Would you allow an artist from another country to claim Junkanoo or Rake 'N Scrape as their own music without a fight? If your answers to these are no, then why is it that the rule only applies to Bahamians? I believe that any music recorded by a Bahamian artist is simply that - Reggae recorded by a Bahamian, Soca recorded by a Bahamas. However those styles of music belong to Jamaica and Trinidad. So we do live wit a bit of hypocrisy. There is such a thing such as cultural independence and it is time that we claim ALL da tings that are ours wit pride and stop finding excuses to own other people tings. garnelleo 12-14-05, - 03:55 AM Yea they Bahamian, a tad-bit mainstream, but they are one of the best Bahamian singers out there (IMO). One of the few I can listen to and enjoy (throw in KB, Ronnie Butler and a few others). You want them to grab a rake, scrape it and sell it, for them to be 'Bahamian'? If thats the case then Junknoo with the brass, aint Junkanoo. Bikes are apart of Chinese culture right, yet I doubt they invented them. |
