Yes, I do think that Bahamen are Bahamians and has, in the past, represented our music and culture with due respect. However, I found that their last two albums did not showcase the Bahamian culture to the full extent.
I know that one of those albums spawned a multi-platnum hit "Who Let The Dogs Out," which was a Trinadadian song and was nice to see that they recieved accolades and success with. But the album had a more calypso flava to it and did not justly expose Bahamian music and culture to the world.
After that album, they really haven't put more focus in allowing this new audience that they have captured because of "Who Let the Dogs out" success to hear, feel and get a taste of the Bahamian culture---which could have perhaps lend hand in the world getting to here KB, Sweet Emily, Gino D, IRA, Ronnie Butler, and others. This would of open doors for many of these great artists bringing the Bahamian music and culture to a whole new level.
But, hey, this is just my thinking. Bahamen, I feel, still have time to make good on showcasing and exposing the Bahamian music and culture on a larger scale as well as giving exposure to the rest of our Bahamian artists.
Of course Bahamen is Bahamian. Any music played and recorded by a Bahamian is Bahamian. It might not be our distinctive style or conventional music but it is Bahamian. They are now global and have hit upon a sound that the world likes. I say go for it however you can break into the competitive world of music. Once you've got to the top you can do your own thing - meanwhile in getting there you have to play by the rules. It's not selling out - it's good business sense. What's the one about kissing before you can kick it? I say go for it Bahamen, stay strong and you will always be a part of our conch salad and peas and rice culture no matter where you go in the world. You are 100 percent Bahamian. Now we are sharing you with the rest of the world and I am extremely proud of your accomplishments.

Bahamen's success is simply due to their producers knowing how to guide the outstanding talents of the band in a way that is marketable to the rest of the world (particularly the US - the largest commercial market in the Western hemisphere).
At first I was skeptical about the almost-overnight evolution in their sound, but all they were really doing is playing what the US wants to hear. Hey, it worked extremely well and they need to be congratulated for it. They're not the only ones to benefit from an Americanized sound either. Groups like T- connection and individuals like Lenny Kravitz have benefitted from a switch in genres as well.
:sailing: Face it, Bahamians dont appreciate their music as much as they truly should, especially younger generations. How many cars do you hear going down the street each day blasting Rap and Reggae? Lots of 'em! With our relatively unappreciative market that hardly supports Bahamian talent, I wouldn't blame them for going where they can truly gain some respect.
So yes, Bahamen is a Bahamian band. They just happen to have morphed themselves into a more popular product. Such is the evolution of Bahamian music.
Kimberley 07-01-03, - 12:20 AM No, they are not Bahamians they are already influenced by the American culture. Of course they are Bahamians because they were born here in the Bahamas but in terms of their music it could be more Bahaminize.

So i listen to rock music, im not bahamian?
So i eat mcdonalds, im not bahamian?
I eat potato salad and macaroni cheese (originated in the US), am i not bahamian?
No band can make it big in the Bahamas, hence they must go elsewhere, or they end up in a dead end band for the rest of their lives. They may however now be considered Bahamian/American.

Bahamen are Bahamians ok lets look at who put use on the map when it comes to music yes we had the T connestions did they sing bahamian music. But yet people still have them as the greatest bahamian band every. Why is it that we as black people always put our own down they are doing a great job and i wish them all the success go for it I say bahamen and do what you have to Uncle Jeff.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 09-11-03, - 06:42 PM well, they're bahamian citizens but I definitly do not think that their sound is bahamian at all. it's the exact same pop formula you hear from the likes of britney spears, madonna, christina aguilera,. and countless others...so no, i do not consider the bahamen's new sound and image bahamian.

they sing west indian music, nothing like pop or rock man, geez, what kind of music do you listen to!
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 09-15-03, - 06:49 PM i've listen to a few of their "new" music and it sounds VERY much if not the same as american pop music. i don't blame them...they have to do what appeals to their market (even they said this). but when i was in the states and heard them say the bahamen were up next i didn't recognize them at all
GavinK 03-16-04, - 10:37 PM yes in short.
Could their hit song really fall under the heading "Bahamian Music" I doubt it but....maybe "New Bahamian Music". There's nothing wrong with new musical styles. In country they have alot of "New Country" which is bigger now than "Contemporary Country". It's all good to me.
I'd like to see more "New Bahamian".
Btw the beat from "Who Let The Dogs Out" is a basic style of beat used often in many dance songs that came out of Miami in the 90's. I love that Miami bass. I'm sure they are still writing songs with it.
lukku cairi 08-25-04, - 07:31 PM Of course dey's Bahamian!
GavinK wants to see more "new Bahamian" - I'd like to see someone do something with the heritage we already have, e.g. George Symonette, Blind Blake, all the old calypso singers nobody remembers these days. We shouldn't forget them.

I guess next she wants sidney poitier to act in more 'bahamian' movies.
Bahamen experimented with who let the dogs out. The leader of the band hated it but he was overrule and it was released. you know the rest.
Bahamen have absolutely no control over what they release right know. The record label has the first and last word so they are dictating bahamens sound.
