New Flu Pandemic Could Kill 150 Million

"We expect the next influenza pandemic to come at any time now, and it's likely to be caused by a mutant of the virus that is currently causing bird flu in Asia," he said.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has swept through poultry populations in Asia since 2003, infecting humans and killing at least 65 people, mostly poultry workers, and resulting in the deaths of tens of millions of birds. The virus does not pass from person to person easily, but experts believe this could change if the virus mutates.
Nabarro said with the almost certainty of another influenza pandemic soon, and with experts saying there is a high likelihood of the H5N1 virus mutating, it would be "extremely wrong" to ignore the serious possibility of a global outbreak.
"The avian flu epidemic has to be controlled if we are to prevent a human influenza pandemic," Nabarro said.
The 1918 influenza pandemic killed more than 40 million people, and there were subsequent pandemics in 1957 and 1968 which had lower death rates but caused great disruption, he said.
In a new pandemic, Nabarro said, "the range of deaths could be anything between 5 and 150 million."
"The work we're doing over the next few months on prevention and preparedness will make the difference between, for example, whether the next pandemic leads us in the direction of 150 (million) or in the direction of 5 (million)," he said.
He said Asian leaders met with Secretary-General Kofi Annan during the recent U.N. summit and asked for U.N. assistance in coordinating the response to the bird flu epidemic.
Annan asked Nabarro to take a leave from his current post as WHO's executive director for sustainable development and health environments to become the U.N. system's coordinator for avian and human influenza.
Nabarro said he plans to travel to Washington on Friday to work with the U.S. State Department on preparations for the first meeting of the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza on Oct. 7. The U.S. initiative, announced by President Bush at the U.N. summit on Sept. 14, is designed to increase global readiness to deal with a human flu pandemic and will "garner political will," he said.

i just told you kill the chickens!:duh: like they did the cows I just hiope poprah doesnt open up her big mouth again and get herself into unwanted legal trouble.
canesfins 09-30-05, - 04:20 PM But what happens when the ducks have it, kill them too? THen the pigeons, then the sea gulls. We should just quarintine that side of the world
We really need to worry about this possible Pandemic. It has happened before, it will happen again. Just to name two of them - In 1347 The Black Death. 25 million people died in five years- that is one-third of Europe's people. The Great Spanish Flu of 1918 (already mentioned in another post) 40 million died in that one. My father as born in 1908. He remembered the fear that one caused and the deaths.
I have been watching this "Bird Flu" as it makes its way across the Far East. If it takes off, and it just might, we will be in trouble. Don't worry about the birds! Once this virus mutates and "jumps species" humans will pass it on to humans very, very quickly - within days! With the advent of quick travel it could come quicker that we think. If it comes, Hurricanes will be child's play in comparison.
Take your vitamins folks! The Biological time bomb is ticking.

I doubt you could get it from a cooked bird! The heat of the cooking would have killed any viruses. Besides, the flu is not on this side of the world - yet!

so you think i could try the peking duck before it reach?:) i could be wrong but i don't think the Asians that died from poultry-flu ate raw chicken,CG do you know whether birds migrate from China with this flu and it becomes airbourne or is it contracted from consumption? or both?

As I understand it, most birds migrate from the North to the South. Some do stray a little West or East but by and large, the birds that migrate from Asia don't come our way. However, you will have to ask a bird expert on that one.
As for how it is transmitted, I would think it was airborne - most flu is, or the germs are transmitted from hand to hand contact. If I have the flu and I sneeze on you, you will get it. If I shake hands with you, you will get it. If you are exposed to infected birds, you will get it from the air or contact with the birds themselves.
It would be interesting to know if anyone has a relative who was alive in 1918 (the last BIG flu.) If they are still alive ask them if it came here and if they got it. The reason I ask is that there is some indication that the 1918 flu was a "bird flu" too. If it was, their relatives might have inherited some immunity to it - but who can say?
P.S. Enjoy your Peking Duck! I had some a few weeks ago. I am still here!!
