I am sure we were ALL very proud to see Tonique kick butt during the IAAF Championships. She won that gold medal in grand style showing the world that the Bahamas aint going no where but up in the international track&field arena. But Tonique didn't start this upward motion, I thought that Pauline started to show this when she won her silver medal, and then the Golden Girls just blew them away with the gold. We were ALL very proud of our girls and their performance in the Olympics and there was talk then of naming the new highway after them(it was just in its initial construction stages then). So why is it that now that the highway is finished and Tonique has won a "new" gold medal, are we pushing the "original" Golden Girls aside and showering the "new" girl with so much. Do we no longer appreciate what the Golden Girls did? Did they not bring home the FIRST Olympic gold medal in track & field for the Bahamas? Is not an Olympic gold more prestigeous than an IAAF gold? Are we telling the Golden Girls "later fa you-we moving on"?

I love Tonique just as much as everyone, but I feel the government should keep the Golden Girls Highway and name their next highway after Tonique-its only fair.:raw:

I don't think it should be the Golden girls Highway either - this again is only one group of individuals they deserve to be honored but not that big of an honor when there are so much more talented people and many more to come The golden Highway is enough and all medal winners and athletics champion should be onit a photo that will weather the weather (LOL) so everyone can be seen. in sports is one accomplishment is greater than the next

Tonique is not getting all of the attention, she is getting what she deserves. Don't hate on her because of that instead we should congratulate her. I am going to bring the Bahamas goldd to one day

the golden girls and tonique and dexter and mychal and rick are all that, but in the overall scheme of things i wish that we offered one-tenth of the energy we expend in support of our athletes ... in support of education and environment. enough already.

anyone for getting a bahamian curling team together for the next winter olympics????

While I applaud the acheivements of our athletes like Tonique, I think the government needs to be careful of the precedent they set when it comes to monetary awards for our athletes. If we continue our upward trend in the international sports arena, we can expect more Bahamians to perform well and bring home Olympic and World medals. If or when that happens, can the gov. or rather the tax payers afford to give each athlete land, name a highway after them, give them a car, etc. etc.

The government needs to implement legislation on awards for athletes that medal at international sporting events, just to prevent persons high up from 'getting carried away'.

True! The Gov’t of the Bahamas (both parties) have made some bad judgment calls that lays heavily against precedents.

Also, the Ministry of Tourism spends millions to advertise the Islands of the Bahamas but when an athlete like Tonique wins a Gold at the Olympics or World Games which is views by billions it’s free and reaches billions as appose to a multi-million dollar advertisement campaign that the MOT runs that only hits one state.

But I think something should be set and if my memory servers me there is in terms of winning a Gold, Silver or bronze and an international event.

i all about da curlin mission jed... either curling or speed skating...

we need to change the name of the road to *fill in the blank* highway... have like a removable slot type deal in there... that's where the name can change just as quickly as the attentionz of our illustrious leaderz...

I happen to think that landmarks and such should be titled accordingly.
I like Williams..from since she was in St Johns. She was allways a hot piece of tail:taped2: ..... I mean TALENT!:)

But, com mon...at this stage she has clearly been touted and exploited prematurely!
What if she "even though I doubt it" turns out like Obead??
Will we be naming streets after her then?
We wont even name a puppy after Obead.....:taped2:

To be honest, an important highway as the ex harald road needs another important figure for it to be named after..just to show that we have our priorities in the right place.
What about the Orville Turnquest way???
He at least lived there, and did alot more for this country than she has done so far in terms of development.
Better yet..why not name a sporting complex after her?

I just think we get our priorities mixed up when we give things imporper status.
jmo!
