View Full Version : National Heroes......Can we name them ALL???
licks2 10-21-05, - 07:21 PM This is something that I'm very passionate about as a Bahamian. It has been a complete disservice to this country and its educational system for FAILING to introduce Bahamian History as a legitimate subject in our schools.
The blame game can go on for an eternity on this issue, which it not what I want to get into.....that's water under the bridge. But what I would like to do however, is recognize those men and women who have made paramount contributions to the economic, social, and political development of this country.
Let's see if we can name them all...the WHO'S WHO of our great country!
I'll start.
Sir Lynden Pindling
1st Prime Minister of The Bahamas
One of the Poineers for majority rule, Bahamianization, and Independence
Main character in the Infamous "Black Tuesday"
My father was the greatest Bahamian man who ever lived. He has left the greatest legacy...ME!:bye:
If I get to be half the man he was, then I too will qualify for herohood some day! He marched to beat of no man...raised all successful children.
At his funaral, all agreed...he was exceptional in courage and honesty...he was a pace setter. He left me a guide to follow...what a man!

You go boi, Lick...
I am sure your dad was a real gem...
Nevertheless, we have no idea who your daddy is and what impact he made upon the Bahamas besides having you that is!
canewry 10-22-05, - 12:49 PM The six PLP's who won seats in the 1956 election were Lynden Pindling, Cyril Stevenson, Clarence Bain, Milo Butler, Sammy Isaacs and Randol Fawkes, so I guess they are the fabulous 6
There ya go, thanks Androsann. I just need Giann to respond now...

If my memory serves me correct, Randol Fawkes was not under the PLP ticket at that time.

Actually, according to Bumpy Wakins in this weeks column, Randol Fawkes took over as chairman of the PLP after Henry Taylor. Then he was ousted by Sir Lynden, then formed his own Labour party.
androsann 10-22-05, - 05:28 PM To quote from "Pindling- The life and times" part 3 pg 71
"If the PLP were to act effectively in parliament, it would need a leader in the House. From their performance in the election the two most dynamic candidates were Randol Fawkes and Lynden Pindling...... As the Senior Member from the South and, as Pindling himself admitted, the more popular on the hustings, Fawkes had no doubt that he was the man for the job."
So if Randol Fawkes was not under the PLP ticket how could he be considered for PLP Leader in the House?

Yes, this was definitely so. I recall Fawkes and Pindling winning what was called the Deep South seat. This was a very large area in those days so it had two reps. They even had a slogan: "Fawkes and Pindlin, Girls in Crindlin" (Crindlin - Spell? - was some kind of fancy skirt young ladies used to wear those days). Marichal and others may be too young to recall this.
Fawkes was very dynamic and had lots of charisma. He could gather a large crowd at the drop of a hat. He was the best in the PLP at this in his day!

That sounds about right....
gian_18778 10-22-05, - 07:05 PM actually, you may be surprise if you looked through the history books...the PLP was formed as an alternative to the Bay Street Boys... Henry Taylor, conchie joe, cyril Stevenson, black conchie joe and others formed the PLP...thats a fact...If one would go through the entire list, you would find that the majority of them may could have passed for white in todays Bahamas...
Bahamians just need to do some research on what is what, and perhaps, then we can stop being racist and accept one for just being Bahamian...
To my own ignorance I have never heard about a *black* conchie joe. Sounds like an oxymoron. But anyway,it could have been how they describe light skinned peple at the time...

Actually they were a little more than just light skinned...They had white features, white parents, but, that black blood surfaced after being dormant for maybe 10 to 20 years....Spanish Wells has a lot of black conchie joes.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Interesting enough though. I thought that there would have been a least about 15 folks named by now, I guess it should come as no surprise seeing that we never really gave it a lot of thought.

Was just basing this on something told to me by the man himself, but who knows maybe I misunderstood him.
