Now Island gal, I was agreeing with every word you wrote until this

What I love best about the Out Islands -- because Poster No. 1 can ONLY be from Nassau -- is that we celebrate our differences!

If you knew your history, especially your Bahamian history you should difinitely never wrote that. I agree that some bahamians do accept some foreigner more than others but I think you are a bigger hyprocrite when you can't even accept your own bahamian people. I am a proud Nassauian, I am a black educated bahamian woman. You are no different from Candy, she wrote ignorant things about peolpe of Haitian background, but you made the assumption that she is ignorant because she might be from Nassau.

You are in no way different.

One Bahama Land, I am waiting for that day.

Yes We are family, so the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

In most of the world people can fly flags from whatever country they wish. In America, haitian, Bahamian, French, English and American flags are all shown proudly and very few people would complain about it. I do not understand why Bahamians are so distrustful and hateful of outsiders. In most countries, hard workers like the Haitians would be welcome. Also, the excellent quality of expat workers the Bahamians get would be enviable. In Canada, we wish those expats in the Bahamas would come back! And here you try to kick them out. I will never understand why that is.

My Haitian friend, yes I know that u have your flag and yes I understand that u have national pride, but what I don't understand is why display it here, go home and be proud, go home and fight for your rights, go home and fly as many flags as u wish anywhere u wish, I will reiterate, God is not making anymore land so therefore the space he gave to me I will fight for it for myself and my children, yes ignorant me will fight for it and teach my children that illegal can't make legal, maybe since u are so smart u should teach yours the same.
If I don't leave my guiness bottles and Kfc for u to pick up, what kind of jobs are u going to have.Oh never mind I forgot u have all the good jobs now, we will pick it up.
The other nationals come here but they are not leeches like your people, free everything, education, free health services, even getting free cemetery space, guess what? most of them are making some positive contribution, they pay their way.
So because Stephen Dillet was the first black MP that happened to be a Haitian, does that makes it right for all of u to come? So tell me something, How much of u coming to the Bahamas is enough, do u think all would be enough???
Maybe we should move to Haiti and let all of u come here and when u have finished friggin this up{ your words not mine}then u will take your flag and go with your national pride to someone else's land.
There is so much jealousy in your response, How can u come in my land and hate me, that is deep my friend, u gave yourself away when u referred to us as 'you Bahamians" If u have this countries best interest at heart how can u wish us pain? How can u wish that we would catch hell and have to jump on the boat and go to Miami? My friend I knew all along there was an agenda, yes the Haitian agenda is to bring us all down to your level and then leave us bruised, battered and torn, then u will go somewhere else with your flag. Yeah u musse tink we stupid eh?:dunce:
Yes my views maybe be lopsided, but these are my 100% Bahamian views that I am expressing in my country, I wonder what would happen to me if i tried to express them in Haiti????
We Bahamians are really a passive or I guess u would say stupid people, to sit and watch the things that we love and cherish being stolen from us with our eyes wide open.
WAKE UP MY PEOPLE. I wish every Bahamian can see your repsonse,
THIS LAND IS MY LAND GOD GAVE THEIS LAND TO
ME:bahamas:
He gave u your land , so sail away my friend, flag and all:haiti: Go and fight for your rights, go and be patriotic, go and build your nation. Leave me with my nastiness, with my land that God gave to me, let me litter it with guiness bottles, kfc, let me eat my fish, let me pollute my coral reefs and water, let me buy Tommy b s until I am fool, let my grass grow over my head if I can't find anyone to cut it, after all it is my grass in my land.
Yes and guess what I am a christian, but if u know your creole bible Jesus was no wimp.
So if u go home i won't have to run to Miami for refuge, that space will be on the boat for u and your children that u don't want to grow up in ignorance.
So walk:walk: ride:escape: sail:sailing: man do whatever u have to do, but go back home, guess what:uh: ? we gon be jus awright. so see ya and good luck with that 75 million dollar aid, don't spend it all in one place, or better yet send some for us so we could go buy some tommy b s,:bye: sit tight on the boat na:sailing: Don't fall u may get polluted with our polluted reefs

you go boy well said

ZZRIGBA, did you and candy45 read my exchange with Haitianboy in this thread? There are bigger issues here than immigration!

HaitianBoy and CG: Your dialogue has brought tears to my ears, as the truth of which you both write is so necessary and yet still so far away. Thank you for sharing such poignant thoughts in this forum, and for opening up a discussion that is long overdue.

As a Bahamian, I celebrate Junkanoo and bush medicine and calypso music and Susan J. Wallace and fresh conch and Yer ho rum. But my college roommate in the USA was from Petionville, just outside of Port au Prince in Haiti, and we shared so many thoughts as to the great strength of the Haiti that once was compared to the pain of the present country.

Thank you taking the ongoing discussion of Haitians in Haiti and the Bahamas to another level, and God bless ...

You are right when you say that what we talked about is far away, how far is up to us. You and your room mate have shared something important - each others stories. I hope you continue! If not with her, with others.

When I was in college I shared rooms with people from Africa, by choice, as no one else would. I learned things that I never knew. I did learn that even if we are different we are all brothers/sisters under the skin. I would encourage you to do the same thing LEARN, not just from books but from other people's hearts.
Who knows what the future brings? But it can be a brighter future if people like you (and other readers) make it so. REmember, you ARE the future! Make that your major in college! P.S are you still in college?

I am sorry that where and when you went to college, that most people would not have chosen to room with the Africans. What a story that tells as to way that they were raised. My attitude was always more important than my appearance.

I have been out of college for a very long time, but still work hard with my various assignments. Bottom line, your actions and the way you live your life absolutely reflects your values. Bahamaland is such the melting pot of so many differing cultures, and I look forward to the day when we can see Haitians for the strength and historical importance that they offer this country, and as more than gardeners and housekeepers willing to work for slave wages of $50 per week. Haiti is the oldest black democracy in the WORLD, and is more than 500 years old. There is a lot to be learned here. :haiti: - :realmad:

First of all, if the Bahamas is a democratic country they should be able to show there flags and open up Haitian owned companies. When Bahamians come to the US, they display there flags and open up business so Bahamian don't have respect for Americans and should go back home.I don't know about u, but I have a problem with the amount of Haitian flags I see popping up on cars. In the midst of my celebrating my independence, while I am proudly displaying my flag, the Hatians are displaying theirs, what is that all about?:Wake up my people. This is seriuos times, this may seem like a small thing but is only the beginning.
Today it is the flag, tomorrow it will be streets named after them, they will be running for public offce soon, and then in the very near future peas and rice, and names like Cox and Bain will be replaced by Haitian names and dishes. They have already started to open businesses and guess who they employ?
This up and coming generation is in for the fight of their lives, we must fight to keep this land for our children.
THIS LAND IS MY LAND. Sail away my friends :bahamas::sailing::hot:

*VERY* well spoken. We are where we are today (like it or not) due to racial, social, and religious diversity.

Wow it looks like I gave up on this discussion too early, It is interesting reading all the things I missed...

CG I want to thank you for this exchange, I sent some of my Haitian friends online here and they also wanted to say thanks...I would like to thank the one that started this thread also because though we visit the Bahamas for weddings and vacations, we never took the time to reflect on how the Haitians presence on the Island is viewed

Islandgyal, you are very welcomed

I am a Caribbean boy, I love all aspects of the Caribbean and all the people that occupy it...I dont care for color, religion or nationality...I hope one day we can all put aside our cultural differences and work as one...my country may be struggling now, but as we embark on our Bi Centennial, we are celebrating for all who were oppressed and we are celebrating the fact that we once served as a good example...as Haiti has shown time and again, we are survivors and like our saying goes "peyi nou pap tonbe" - Our country will not fall...next time you see someone of Haitian heritage in the Bahamas, I ask you to please put aside any prejudice you may have for a second and get to know a little bit about them, you will be suprised how much you may learn about yourself...

Love love to you all and god bless

CG, I have never forgotten about our exchange here. You have thought me alot in a short time. I came here merely to defend my fellow countrymen and women and never thought I'd end up learning so much. I had to step away for a while to work on my project...as things are developing and the project is getting closer to launch, I can afford some time now to come back again and get a load of knowledge. I am still very interested in your lessons on Budha. I dont know if you remember but I have been on a search for spirituality ever since I decided to turn my back on Christianity.

I look forward to learning from you again my friend.

I hope you will check my threads in this site, under Bahamas Religion. One is "Buddhism...What is it about?" There is a second one you might find interesting called "A Connoisseur of clay feet." It is a long story but I think it is worth the read for someone seeking the real meaning of religion.
