candy45 06-14-03, - 12:05 PM I don't know about u, but I have a problem with the amount of Haitian flags I see popping up on cars. In the midst of my celebrating my independence, while I am proudly displaying my flag, the Hatians are displaying theirs, what is that all about? It is an insult to me, if they are proud of their country then they should go home and put up their flag. How dare u come in my land and put up your flag. Wake up my people. This is seriuos times, this may seem like a small thing but is only the beginning.
Today it is the flag, tomorrow it will be streets named after them, they will be running for public offce soon, and then in the very near future peas and rice, and names like Cox and Bain will be replaced by Haitian names and dishes. They have already started to open businesses and guess who they employ?
This up and coming generation is in for the fight of their lives, we must fight to keep this land for our children.

skept 06-20-03, - 03:13 PM I don't know about you, but I have a problem with lop-sided views. In the midst of me celebrating creative, logical thought in my land I see this crud.
Just in case you still have not stopped to re-read the first post and think about it, let me break it down.
People from Haiti are - guess what -- Haitian. And that means they have a flag. Just because they look for a better life for themselves and family doesn't mean they can't have national pride. By your measurment Bahamians should not have their flags on cars when in the US.
"Today it is the flag, tomorrow it will be streets named after them"
Crack has to be back in style! First of all last I checked I didn't see any Arawaks left anywhere around, so all our people from somewhere else. Second, I don't see you saying poop about N. Americans or Europeans coming here, taking jobs Bahamians can do, and then bashing the country every chance they get. To be clear I'm not talking about those whose skills truly are needed and actually mix with Bahamians. To those others: 1) Shut up!
2) If it's so bad here why are you here? Carry ya you-know--what back to you 'great' white country of no sun where you can't hang out and pretend to be elite because you come from a 'first world' nation.
Back to that statement. As I said we have other people who you seem to deem unfit for criticism but they have streets named after them already! Hell, whole areas - can you say Oakes Field?
You ain' lie about these being serious times. People like you are making it serious with these kinds of comments.
If I have one more hypocrite who calls themselves a 'Christian' Bahamian - not that you have - talk to me about fighting I'll give 'em one. Christianity is about love and embracing people. Why don't you try extracting the massive lamp-pole of a stick from you and your people's eyes before you start trying to do it for others?
If you don't like potcake society you in the wrong place.
Just in case your ignorance extends to politics a Hatian was one of the first, if not THE first, black MP in Bahamian Parliment.
Sometimes I wish Cuba would open up and a few other things happen to the economy for some of you 'Bahamians' to have some hard friggin' times. Before we get anywhere near as bad as Haiti (i.e. when y'all can't buy no friggin' racist Tommy b.s. anymore) yinna 'ill be on the boat to Miami and I'll be praising the day cause won't be so many of you round to eat all the g. damn fish and f. up the coral anymore, or leave ya g. damn KFC and Guniess bottles on the beach.
Find something worth while ranting about or I'll slap you with some more incomprehensible-to-you logic!
The only fight I need is the one to keep my children away from such festering ignorance being spouted around the country like this.

islandgyal 06-23-03, - 06:44 PM You GO ... exceptional post! I too am so tired of all of the ignorant Haitian bashing happening these past thirty years, all against people who are NOT too proud to work for an honest dollar ... and ask for nothing more than some peace and quiet.
The Bahamas has always been a proud collection of Spanish, English, Dutch, Bermudan, African you know ... when was the LAST time you opened up a history book anyhow?
What I love best about the Out Islands -- because Poster No. 1 can ONLY be from Nassau -- is that we celebrate our differences! Fly the Bahamian tri-colour, the Union Jack, St. David's Cross, hell ... fly a pirate's flag, 'cos we've all got pirates in the family bloodlines, too.
We are family! Stop ranting on other people just so that you have a scapegoat that you can look down on. As Bob Marley said so well, 'As you judge me, someone else is waiting to talk bad about you.'
candy45 06-23-03, - 06:44 PM My Haitian friend, yes I know that u have your flag and yes I understand that u have national pride, but what I don't understand is why display it here, go home and be proud, go home and fight for your rights, go home and fly as many flags as u wish anywhere u wish, I will reiterate, God is not making anymore land so therefore the space he gave to me I will fight for it for myself and my children, yes ignorant me will fight for it and teach my children that illegal can't make legal, maybe since u are so smart u should teach yours the same.
If I don't leave my guiness bottles and Kfc for u to pick up, what kind of jobs are u going to have.Oh never mind I forgot u have all the good jobs now, we will pick it up.
The other nationals come here but they are not leeches like your people, free everything, education, free health services, even getting free cemetery space, guess what? most of them are making some positive contribution, they pay their way.
So because Stephen Dillet was the first black MP that happened to be a Haitian, does that makes it right for all of u to come? So tell me something, How much of u coming to the Bahamas is enough, do u think all would be enough???
Maybe we should move to Haiti and let all of u come here and when u have finished friggin this up{ your words not mine}then u will take your flag and go with your national pride to someone else's land.
There is so much jealousy in your response, How can u come in my land and hate me, that is deep my friend, u gave yourself away when u referred to us as 'you Bahamians" If u have this countries best interest at heart how can u wish us pain? How can u wish that we would catch hell and have to jump on the boat and go to Miami? My friend I knew all along there was an agenda, yes the Haitian agenda is to bring us all down to your level and then leave us bruised, battered and torn, then u will go somewhere else with your flag. Yeah u musse tink we stupid eh?:dunce:
Yes my views maybe be lopsided, but these are my 100% Bahamian views that I am expressing in my country, I wonder what would happen to me if i tried to express them in Haiti????
We Bahamians are really a passive or I guess u would say stupid people, to sit and watch the things that we love and cherish being stolen from us with our eyes wide open.
WAKE UP MY PEOPLE. I wish every Bahamian can see your repsonse,
THIS LAND IS MY LAND GOD GAVE THEIS LAND TO
ME:bahamas:
He gave u your land , so sail away my friend, flag and all:haiti: Go and fight for your rights, go and be patriotic, go and build your nation. Leave me with my nastiness, with my land that God gave to me, let me litter it with guiness bottles, kfc, let me eat my fish, let me pollute my coral reefs and water, let me buy Tommy b s until I am fool, let my grass grow over my head if I can't find anyone to cut it, after all it is my grass in my land.
Yes and guess what I am a christian, but if u know your creole bible Jesus was no wimp.
So if u go home i won't have to run to Miami for refuge, that space will be on the boat for u and your children that u don't want to grow up in ignorance.
So walk:walk: ride:escape: sail:sailing: man do whatever u have to do, but go back home, guess what:uh: ? we gon be jus awright. so see ya and good luck with that 75 million dollar aid, don't spend it all in one place, or better yet send some for us so we could go buy some tommy b s,:bye: sit tight on the boat na:sailing: Don't fall u may get polluted with our polluted reefs

ronnie 06-23-03, - 07:39 PM hot hot, hot hot.:hot: skept man u gat ta be haitian in my best vernacular:haiti: :: .u really think we are stupid.bahamians, have bren more than tolerant,of haitians.enough is enough .it seems as though bahamians can,t speak on this issue before some migrant get all hot up telling us some nonsense about some other nationality guess what i am fifth generation bahamian and i have more than enough rights than to say if your'e illegal go home .all and sundry:: guess what , whatever, benefits bahamians enjoy ist becausw the lord has blessed usmaybe if youll stop practicing voodoo and legitimizing it you guys would be better of .jealous, jealous, jealous
islandgyal 06-23-03, - 07:55 PM all i can say is, i am sixth generation bahamian, and have seen so many changes in this country for better and for worse. times are hard now, and people must need a scapegoat. as many haitians are illegal here, and yes it can be a problem, there are as many bahamians working illegal in other countries as well. when people need work, they go to where the work is. you would think that we in the bahamas of all blessed people would understand that first. we are supposed to do for others as we would have them do unto us.
ronnie 06-23-03, - 08:23 PM bahamians in other countries illegally sholud be sent home also.if you are wrong,u are wrong. it seems as though some people want the full 8-10 million haitians here. how much is enough they need to change that ridiculous law anyway if u come here illegally your child is also illegal. immigration need to be set up at all clinics .once u come in pregant find out your status and have them deported .before that baby is born . in my estimation there is at least 150,000,00 haitians here legal and illegal combined ,and i am being generous. we have sat back and watch the haitianization of over the hill.it jus aint right
Delroy 06-24-03, - 04:20 AM Guys lets be professional about all of this.
If we are sons and daughters of the Most High we should not be afraid of anyone ( Cuban, American, Jamaican or Haitians ) coming to "take over our land".
The truth is that it all belongs to God because He was the one who created it and we all dwell in one world that isn't getting any bigger.
Another truth is that Haiti needs our help and the help of the world right now. Too many of them are dying for reasons that shouldn't be for a country that is so close to wealth.
But most of all: HAITI NEEDS JESUS! And if we have Christ within us we should embrace these people for who they are; our brothers and sisters. We need to bring the Word of God to Haiti. There is a physical and spiritual famine in Haiti which is a terrible situation for any country.
We also need to follow the teachings that the LORD gave us in the book of Exodus in regards to how we should treat foreigners:
Exodus 21: “Do not oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.” All who are of Christ were once foreigners in the land of Egypt, if not physically; spiritually.
We should also take heed also to the warning that the LORD gave us in the following versus if we disobeyed this command:
Exodus 23: “If you do and they cry out to me, then I will surely help them. 24 My anger will blaze forth against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Your wives will become widows, and your children will become fatherless.”
Leviticus 19:34 says that “They should be treated like everyone else, and you must love them as you love yourself.”
Let me show you why some Haitians are being blessed in the Bahamas:
The Bible says in Deuteronomy 10:18 “He (God) shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.”
And again He commands us in verse 19: “You, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.”
There are many verses in the Bible quoting that very same thing and I can show you all of them but I think you understands it about now.
Why is the LORD repeating this command over and over in the Bible?
Its a simple but easily forgotten principle that Jesus summed up in Matthew 7:12 "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Another example of this principle Christ said in Matthew 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
I call it The Give and Take Principle! It however is not a principle to be taken lightly because it is very serious. "Whatever you sow you shall reap."
I was born and raised here in the Bahamas but this is not my home. My house is in Zion, the new Jerusalem and there I will dwell with Jesus when all is said and done. God didn't place me here to fight for land that is here today and gone tomorrow. I am here to fight for souls for the Kingdom. I am a Kingdom Worker and I see no difference between the soul of a Haitian or anyone else. I have only one goal in life and that is to carry out the last command that Jesus gave to me before His ascension into Heaven.
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon; who is the wises man that ever lived tells us in verse two of the first chapter that “All is Vanity”. Land, house, cars, anything that vanishes away “All is Vanity”. Will I fight for Vanity? It makes no sense because Jesus died for us to live and in doing so we should live for Him. Not land, house, money or even family.
Did not Jesus accept us as Gentiles/Foreigners in days when we weren't even considered pure enough to step foot in the House of God so we had to listen to the teachings from the outside. And now that we can go to church freely; people don't.
If God accept me as a Foreigner into His home then why must I be contrary?
If I can call myself a Child of God, live freely in His Kingdom, have all the benefits of others within His Kingdom who I met there before I arrived, live and work in His Kingdom; why must I treat anyone else contrary? Are we more intelligent than God? Think about it.
Let me conclude with one of my favorite scriptures again from the book of Ecclesiastes which sealed my belief on what I should considered to be important in life.
Ecclesiastes 12:13
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
People of the Bahamas “Love never fails”. :bahamas: :heartbeat :haiti:
skept 06-24-03, - 05:41 PM Let me clear up a few things.
First I am at least sixth gen. Bahamian - which doesn't mean anything if I'm not dedicated to my country - which I am. I am gonna protect its environment from abuse and try to build a loving, stable society - as cheesy as that sounds. It seems you assume that I'm a Haitian because my views are not your own. That's interesting, but not very plausible.
Secondly, I stated the kind of people I don't want in this country, but to make it clear I'll say it again.
- People who don't use logic.
- People who dis this country while they're here and/or mess it up. I know more Euros, N. Americans and other primarily white 'First World' people like this than I do Haitians, but I don't care if you are N. American, Haitian, Bahamian or from outer space - If you're like dat, carry ya yes, yes, yes.
- Thirdly, you are right. Jesus wasn't a wuss. He stood up for what he believed in. Now, let me make this very clear- what I have a problem with is people who are 'Christians' who are supposed to follow Jesus, but are really just along for the comfort of being in a big group that can bash minorities. These are the kind of people who would be FNM when the FNM is in power, PLP when the PLP is in power, Lakers fans today, Bulls tomorrow and Spurs the day after.
Jesus left EXPLICIT instructions on how to treat people. He taught love, not how to get rid of other people, no matter who they are and especially if they are in need. They even wrote a song about it, perhaps you've heard it: "And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love."
I do NOT want the entire nation of Haiti to come on over. In fact I don't know anyone who does. If you know someone tell me who they are so I can slap them with a dead fish. My primary points on the Haitian situation boil down to:
- Compassion for those who are worse of than yourself.
- We ALL have ansestry not from here
- If a Haitian or a Martian, learns to communicate with us and contributes positivly to society, then I know lots of 'Bahamians' I'd make a trade for.
So, again, I don't see your logic in the flags-hating or the pride hating. Asking people to ditch personal identity is like trying to make them into people who bleach.
Besides, I never heard anyone complaining about all those Red-White-and-Blues flying downtown on the 4th of July - or is that our independence day now?
What you are afraid of is change, period. The nation so many Bahamians worship, the US, is a melting pot and only got where it is because of it.
People don't like player-haters these days, but being a human-hater seems to be a feather in the cap.
ronnie 06-25-03, - 12:01 PM its not about hate.it's simply a matter of being over run with immigrants, most of whom happen to be haitians.u simply have to protect this country of which we are stewards of .if you're illegal go home . no summer jobs for students, gas station ,movie houses, fast food eateries, hotels,u name jobs are gone.high and low end. also the lord himself was wary of his people mixing with foreigners.jus read about, solomon, and goliath,i say it before, and i will say it again, all,ILLEGALS GO HOME
so the american flags should be taken down too??
If you go to the US would they tell you to not display your flag??
Isnt all Flags displayed in the Olympics??
Anyway, on topic, what does the Bahamian Flag represent? I mean what do the colors on the flag stand for? I am just curious since i see tons of bahamian flags beeing sold all across nassau from stores to jonesors on the side of the street.
YorickBrown 06-28-03, - 07:16 PM All that this discussion is about is the fact that someone decided to display a Haitian flag. As a Bahamian I say go ahead and display it, but at least respect the country that you are in, first and foremost.
What exactly does that mean? Simply to obey the Bahamian immigration laws and stop taking advantage of a situation that will put ALL of us in economic and financial jeopardy. I have one question though: How can anyone truly respect a country in which the first thing that they do is break the country’s laws and enter it illegally? Citizenship is all about the love and respect for the country that a person is a citizen of. By sneaking into The Bahamas, every illegal immigrant (Haitian or otherwise) is in actuality disrespecting The Bahamas and its legitimate citizens. Desperation to find a better life is not an excuse in the slightest when it comes to breaking Bahamian immigration laws.
Haiti's current situation is really sad. This entire world is more than aware of the horrendous conditions that exist there. With an upcoming 200-year independence anniversary on Jan 1, 2004, their celebrations should be filled with happiness. Instead they have a scattered and unhappy populous that risks their lives leaving their homeland to find a better place to live. Haiti is a broken country in that regard.
One thing that the nations of the Caribbean need to COLLECTIVELY realize is that none of us will make it to an elevated level of success if we are continuously putting a strain on each other. Mandates by the more powerful nations already keep the semi-successful Caribbean countries in check (e.g. OECD BLACKlisting). So how is the Caribbean going to make it if we burden each other down with mass influxes of immigrants? Selfishness is the plague that will destroy this region because its citizens do not see the bigger picture. Instead of working on our own problems, the mentality is to desert them or wait until someone else comes along to help us. When will Caribbean people wake up? We are all in this together, so we need to each do our part to make sure that we pull our own weight and not drag or burden others down (Black crab syndrome).
Anyway, this is a delicate subject that involves stepping on many toes and ‘mashin’ plenty corns, but HONESTY  is always the best policy. Invading by cover of night, hiding in the bush and building houses on the land of other persons is not symptomatic of honesty in the least. And no, it does not matter if a foreign person works harder than any native person in the country. Bottom Line: Do not be deceitful. Do not break the laws of a foreign country. And do not expect handouts when the actual citizens of a country are not offered the same courtesies.
I more than gladly welcome and work alongside my Haitian brothers and sisters when they make proper applications for citizenship, without living here illegally first. It shows that they are making an honest effort to better their lives and the lives of fellow Bahamians. The same applies for those of other countries that apply for citizenship LEGALLY. So like I said at the start of this: Go ahead and proudly display the flag of your descent, but at least respect the country that you are in, first and foremost. :bahamas:
