View Full Version : Poor Police Services
We need the police. We need the police to do their jobs. Unfortunately, too often, too many sections of the police force do not do their jobs.
It is clear the Police Force is poorly managed.
In police work response time is everything. We all know that the Police have a very poor response time unless you live in certain sections of town or happen to be a bank. The Police are so unresponsive that it is not unusual for the phones to just ring unanswered. This has happened a number of times when calling the Carmichael Police station and when dialling the emergency number.
The emergency number should be answered on the first ring. Try it and see what happens.
If the police do answer, by the time they show up a crime in progress would be completed and the culprit would have gotten away. To a large degree, crime pays in the Bahamas because for many policemen their occupation is simply a source of income. They do not perform with any pride.
Check the warrants section. See how long it takes for a warrant to be effected or a summons served. Unless you chase the matter yourself, warrants just sit.
Is the Commissioner of Police managing the force properly? Clearly they are too busy with the public relations to do a good job. The police need to be managed by the numbers. A critical number is response time. Another number is crimes solved. Another important number is crimes prevented though this may be a more difficult number to obtain.
We need a professional manager to lead the Police Force. Someone who has management and leadership training and can apply them; someone who knows about police work intimately, someone who cares about the people being served and protected.
Care is shown by positive action. There is no sustained programme of activities from the police force. They start a programme and after a few months you hear nothing for a while. New management and leadership is required for an effective police force.
The segments of the Police Force should be clearly divided. The Fire Branch should be removed from the police force and set up as a separate entity. The police band should be focused on public relations and touristic promotions. They need not be concerned with enforcing the law.
On the flip side of this we need to treat the police better. The police need better insurance, more humane work hours, civilized benefit packages, and care for widowed spouses and orphans. A policeman who is killed in the line of duty should have his/her family cared for properly and completely by the state.
Police also need to know the law. But we will address ths issue later.

its not his job. its the government's job to hire professional analysts from other countries if need be. they should at least do their research on how to improve the force.

Oh really if I can tell you what you are doing wrong I should then be able to tell how to do it right.

only if I am getting paid for it ;-) Otherwise I have other things to do, so I can make money to eat and pay my loan.

i would like to take this time to get my two cents concerning this matter it is not the poor service but it is the fact that we are not proactive a force as we ought to be (acccording to the westmester system) :screw: we are thought to only do what is told and nothing more. the police force has a great amount of dedicated officers but allot are being held back, :footmouth because of the colonial style of policing. :bye: there are educated and qualified officers who see the force as a career but internal factors stop the smooth flow of the system. :liar: most of this can be contributed to bad management and person being in position who do not know how to manage. :bigmouth: also i noticed that there are persons in the system who should be retired for growth, but instead stay and stagnant growth. :footmouth another factor is there is no succession plan or a contingency plan where as the administration sees growth in a proactive manner for the force , :screw: which makes it hard to generate new ideas. we have great leaders but no incentives to motive the men. if a leader shows his men he has a heart to see the best the lower ranks would follow to the end.
You have to remember to, that alot of cops, join the force because it was a sure paying job.
Although I have no evidence to support this point, but I would guess that a person is less likely to perform well if their hearts aren't into what they are doing.
Sorta like how everyone tells me to play basketball competitively because I'm relatively tall. So if I decide to join, I'm not gonna play as hard or take it as seriously as the dude who wants to make it in the sport.

I don't quite understand the highlighted areas. Many times in doing what you are taught or told would require you to use your head or common sense and do a little more, which would be required to get the job done right!
When you say "we have great leaders", do you mean in the Police Force or in the government? Whether the great leaders be in the govt or the police, shouldn't they have strategies and incentives in place to motivate the police officers? If they are truly "great leaders"?

The police force is slowly changing, the pace can be much quicker if we didnt have so much political interferrance. It is truly a shame when people run to the gov for promotion. But that is a diffrent story.
I think in order for the force to change we need to look at recruitment. In the past few years the entrance standard was raised from 5bjc including maths and english to 7 bgcse and you must pass a written exam. There is also a week of physical training that you must go thru before you are considered. Then comes the part where most Bahamians can make there country a better place. VETTING. The police force is made up of members or OUR COMMUNITY. The police force chose these people on your advice. When they come around and asked you about john doe and you say he is a good boy and we never had no trouble with him, but you ddint mention all the time john doe stole your mangoes off your tree or beat up the neighbour boy. We then give John a police number and badge and he goes out there and commint crime. Then people say ya see all these police is theif, but he was always a thief just now he has a chance to steal on a greater scale.

I totally agree with Kassad. To add to that, people cover up for their neighbors, former employees and friends by giving good references so that they can be employed knowing that they don't worth a phart. These are the same persons who eventually commits crimes and sooner or later turn out to be a discipline problem. Both conditions bring discredit to the police force.
With the help of the good law abiding citizens (you know who you are) these situations could be a thing of the past OR when you call the police for assistance I wish they send the same friend you cover up for and then you will see how you deal with that. So please do the right thing.
