yes i know...its true what you said. i think most of it hinges on the things that i wont be able to do anymore. have a beer in a nice park.
True, but there is always the Montagu to sit and enjoy the sunshine and eat you lunch.

walk home from clubbing.
True, walking is dangerous after dark!

snow!
Very little danger of that here! I loved walking in the snow - the crunch, the chill! Wonderful!

shopping! the eurostar...
Selfridges and just about anywhere on Oxford Street

and it goes on....but i know its up to people like me (and my peers) to come home and push our country forward. we lack progressive young people i think...thing that bothers, will anyonme give us a chance?
The question is not, will they give you a chance but are you will to make your own chance?

im considering working for the AGs office...but you know, are the salaries competitive?
Most likely not.

are they willing to let young lawyers have a bit of responsibility...you know.. those things bother me!
I can understand. But remember, old Lawyers were once young lawyers. Responsibility comes with time.

:what: do you mind elaborating? why is that mikki? oh dear god! see CG!!! :screw:

I don't know how to elaborate more than that. He graduated in 2003 and tried finding jobs but when you're broke -- suddenly a job becomes a job. I tried to tell him that there were hundreds of jobs in the US at factories that would pay a healthy salary, if he didn't mind living in a rural area.

But hard-headedness...couldn't tell him anything..

He didn't want to live in a town with 30,000 people. No beach. No clubs. But making 100,000 a year -- you could fly to nassau every weekend if you wanted. I can't feel sorry for him. I got tired of sending him on interviews and he would turn them down because he didn't like the town. He wanted to do the right thing and go back to the bahamas and help his people.

Right. Now he's 30 years old living at home, hanging out with strippers and alcoholics. Pathetic.

I think that you will agree that Christmas begins when the lights go on, on Oxford Street! Post a picture if you can.

Our family used to own a small hotel just off Oxford, in Portman Sq. I could not wait for the sun to go down so that I could see the lights come on. If there was snow, it only made the whole thing more magical.

There is something that happens here in the Bahamas that is almost, if not more, its equal - a winter sunrise over the sea! The sun rises, it could be blood red, pink, or yellow or orange. It lights up the sky with its colour. Talk about the "dawn coming up like thunder!"

and OH! how can i forget: Speaker's Corner on a Sunday afternoon - love it.
Me too! Free speech in action!

Nassau is rank with nepotism. Half of the law firms or accounting firms are family businesses. You need to know somebody's nephew, cousin or auntie.

Once those old lawyers start making good money, they'll never retire. Same with bank managers. Same with politicians. Same with most bahamians. If they aren't forced to retire, they'll sit in that position until they pass away or realize that their nephew needs a job.

Abiskan:

I'll probably go to Turks & Caicos before Nassau.

True with most old lawyers anywhere.

Same with bank managers.
True again.

Same with politicians.
True again or they get voted out!

Same with most bahamians. If they aren't forced to retire, they'll sit in that position until they pass away
True, but most Bahamians, most people world wide are reluctant to leave a job with power and money.

or realize that their nephew needs a job.
They all have nephews?

Let me ask you a question. What if Pindling or many of the other Black leaders of the country gave into your attitude? I'll tell you what! The UBP would still be in power.

Not a big time hotel. In fact many a year it cost more to run it that it made, but it was fun for a while.

You say that as a bad thing.

And you speak of my attitude as if I'm uninformed and ignorant. I'm well aware. You can't compare an instance where the economies allowed for opportunity. Circumstances dictated that the glass ceiling in a majority black country would break. But history has shown that when the glass ceiling is self-imposed, then eventually civil war is the result.

The current socio-political climate of the Bahamas does not welcome growth. And there are only so many opportunities Bahamians can create for themselves without stepping outside of its borders. In fact, without completely overhauling the political and economic structure of the Bahamas, sooner or later the islands we once regarded as home will be divided amongst our debtors.

Show me the growth opportunity.

....Show me the growth opportunity.

Ask those who have already found it. Every business in the Bahamas was started by someone who saw a need, an opportunity and took advantage of it. Business is hard work! But hard work is rewarded by growth - be it modest, but it is growth. Not every business can make one a millionaire but they can make a comfortable living. Sure there are those that fail, but that happens. The question is, are Bahamians ready for the risk, the hard work, the set backs, and the hundred and one things that plague a business? Or are they looking for a free ride?

I have faith in the Bahamas and its people. I only wish they had the same confidence in themselves.

I am bahamian. My family is bahamian. Your rhetoric is baseless. Again, show me the growth. Don't dismiss it with ambiquity like asking those that have found it -- like whom?? Give me numbers. What are the rates of success?? What are the rates of lending?? What are the employment rates?? What are the retention rates?? Growth is dictated by the government. The government is manipulated by those with the economic force to do so. So forgive me if I'm not as misguided. Call me a doubting Thomas -- so shed some truth on my doubt. Show me the money.

Tiger Finlayson had done rather well. The Kellys, Pick up a phone book it is filled with names.

What are the rates of success??
What is your criteria for success? GDP? Which was 3% (2004 est.) The US had 4.4% (2004 est.)

What are the rates of lending??
5.50 Prime Lending

What are the employment rates??
10.2%.

What are the retention rates??
Of what? Businesses, employees?

Growth is dictated by the government.
How so? Growth is dictated by the market and its need for the product, plus the wit and imagination and creativity of the business man. If government is an obstacle, find away around it. There is always a way.

The government is manipulated by those with the economic force to do so.
If that is so, then more fool those with no economic force that vote them in. Perhaps you are not old enough to see it but the growth of this economy has been amazing. It could be again, if some folks would stop whining and use "the little gray cells!"

Sometimes you have to leave, Im thinking about leaving myself for other reasons like more education to distinguish myself. I don’t know where it will take me but I know eventually Ill be back home. I cant clean up in a hotel or do construction work. It’s not that im above it; I find manual labour and domestic work not easy task and quite honourable, but that just een me. I have a strong business savvy and articulate mind- with that said, my goals will not be aligned doing any of those things. And you know how I feel about gov’t so…
Do yall see how education and the economy is related?
But like the article said, you have to find your niche by using your head and be innovative.
You coming from abroad have an advantage, you see need and where these is need there is money to be made.

Bingo!

Honestly, going off to school and coming back home, really limits you in a lot of capacities, unless you have a MP or Prime Minister friend who can help you out, you know how that is. But if you're just the average joe w/ an over-acheiving academic transcript, and NO ONE knows you!!!!!....then guess what? You have to be really creative to make the kind of money that you would like to make in the Bahamas. And what I've discovered, is that you find yourself engrossing yourself in your hobbies rather than your profession because having a degree in the Bahamas means that there is a 95% chance that you WILL NOT be doing EXACTLY what you studied in school as your bread and butter, but rather a by-product of it.

With that said, a lot of time will be spend thinking about the pittance you make called a salary, the constant BS, and limited-vision supervisors, and managers on the job. Thus sparking a need to clear your mind and free your thoughts, usually though your hobbies, and that is where you have to use your brains to make your money at home.

What is your criteria for success? GDP? Which was 3% (2004 est.) The US had 4.4% (2004 est.)

GDP for the US in 2004 was 7.2 according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. I liked how you used the percentage change from one year to the next. That was cute. How about this. Per capita GDP for the Bahamas was 17,000 in 2004 and 40,000 in 2004 for the US. Big difference wouldn't you say??

5.50 Prime Lending

Ouch. Painful. No wonder growth is stagnant. And inflation is only 1.2?? Somebody's making millions somewhere. In the US the inflation rate is 2.5!!!!! The Feds just raised the discount rate to 4!!!!!!! A 1.5 percent spread compared to the 4.3 spread in the US!!!! Ever heard of the Loanable Funds theory?? When you want to slow or speed up an economy you adjust the rate of interest for loanable funds. The higher the rate the poorer the economy. The rate is usually within 1 percent to 2 percent higher than the inflation rate. Which means Bahamians have no growth prospects for a reason. Somebody's stealing their money.

10.2%.

The employment rate is only 10.2 percent?? Ahhh. You meant unemployment. Unemployment in the US is 5.5 percent. Almost half. Wow!!

How so? Growth is dictated by the market and its need for the product, plus the wit and imagination and creativity of the business man. If government is an obstacle, find away around it. There is always a way.

Growth is dictated by the market?? There are legal, political, and social dynamics that facilitate growth. The market is the arena for growth, that's not the same thing as dictating growth.

The government is an obstacle. The pressure to keep ones job and provide for ones family is also an obstacle. I know hundreds of Bahamians that don't speak their minds or vote their hearts for fear of repercussion.

I agree. The growth of the Bahamas could be amazing again. But it should be done by force. When Ping did it, they were too nice. There was still a power differential. I agree that we should stop whining. Burning and looting is more appropriate. There are no mechanisms in place to protect the socially disadvantaged. Name the agencies?? There are none. No FDIC. No SEC. No IRS. No regulatory agencies that ensure fair and equitable economic practices. So we should elect Smith and Wesson.
