interesting article discussing how many educated africans are leaving the continent for europe/n. america. i know this isnt a new issue, but do you see this as a serious issue facing our country? are there really so many of us that leave home and never come back? i'm playing with the idea of moving home, but the prospect terrifies me. that might sound stupid, but the longer you are away from home, the harder it might be to re-adjust. of course home is always home, but well...so anyway, any thoughts on this?

The brain drain is not Bahamians leaving the Bahamas to go the the United States, its, Bahamians leaving the public sector and going over the bridge to Atlantis....At Atlantis there are people with BA and AA lifting luggage and serving food.
garnelleo 11-13-05, - 12:26 AM I think there actually is a bit of a brain drain.
I know of a girl, went to St. Andrews on scholarship, and by being in the right place at the right time, got a scholarship from Lehigh University. Now she graduated and is making a starting salary of 50k+ as an engineer. You know how much she would have been making here (probably 1/2 that), or better yet, what kind of job opportunities would have been available.
I'm sure there are more stories like this, especially with persons pursuing majors like Aerospace or chemical engineering etc.

I was thinking more on the lines of a person @ COB, working towards their degree and hoping to and make some good money. Then they look at their friend who is working @ Atlantis making probably more than they gonna make. So our COB student may say, you know what forget school, and lemme go clean some pools.
some people are just lucky :D
what is leigh??
I think kids these days could be alot smarter than they are, or more so than we were, due to the advancement in computers. If only they would cut out the MSN instant messanging and actually get down to business. :D
PS. i got brain drain, but its from thousands of lines of code, 2 hours a night sleep, and tons of fast food .. what other brain drain is there ..???

Seen that; experience that!

Sometimes you have to leave, Im thinking about leaving myself for other reasons like more education to distinguish myself. I don’t know where it will take me but I know eventually Ill be back home. I cant clean up in a hotel or do construction work. It’s not that im above it; I find manual labour and domestic work not easy task and quite honourable, but that just een me. I have a strong business savvy and articulate mind- with that said, my goals will not be aligned doing any of those things. And you know how I feel about gov’t so…
Do yall see how education and the economy is related?
But like the article said, you have to find your niche by using your head and be innovative.
You coming from abroad have an advantage, you see need and where these is need there is money to be made.

May I ask why it terrifies you? Is it just the re-adjusting? It would seem to me that this country could only benefit from your brain and experience.

it terrifies me because im a 'mover'. a true sagittarius who gets bored v. easily. i cant be in one place for too long and i have to always keep myself occupied. now, nassau, is really too small when you combine these two! ok,there could be projects/voluntary work i can do apart from work, but its just so...small man! i love being at home, dont get me wrong, but when you think the closest place you can go for a change is miami :biggie: ...oh dear.
on a much less superficial level. i think that one gets settled and relaxed too easily and too quickly. you might put this down to the individual, but think about it. you come home with a particular way of thinking, different habits and you're shot down (very fast) because of your 'big world ideas' which are 'impossible to work in da bahamas cuz dis DA BAHAMAS' and you just lose your momentum. you have to deal with people on a dialy basis who dont know the importance of time and on top of this, you have to barricade yourself in your house because apparently its a 'war zone out there'....need i go on?

I understand, I do. Some times I get "itchy feet" myself. I miss the museums and plays, art, and culture of England, the US and other places. But the Bahamas is a great place, with so much work to be done. There is always something to do, if one looks. If one gets board, there is always a flight out to refresh oneself.

This is true, but until people like you come and teach, and demand performance, we will never change. You went away. You learned better ways. The time will come when you must teach!

There is crime everywhere! Look at France! England itself has a crime problem. I am aware of the problems here but if we allow the "dogs" to drive us out!!???!! Crime is a problem that needs keen minds to address.
Sometimes I envy you in England, and the other countries you live lived it - steeped in history. I understand your reluctance to leave. I loved being there. But think about it - the Bahamas is our home, it need us all. It will never change until keen minds make it happen.

yes i know...its true what you said. i think most of it hinges on the things that i wont be able to do anymore. have a beer in a nice park. walk home from clubbing. snow! shopping! the eurostar...and it goes on....but i know its up to people like me (and my peers) to come home and push our country forward. we lack progressive young people i think...thing that bothers, will anyonme give us a chance? im considering working for the AGs office...but you know, are the salaries competitive? are they willing to let young lawyers have a bit of responsibility...you know.. those things bother me!
