View Full Version : Bahamians and eating healthy to live
Tafadhali 11-15-05, - 09:34 PM My sister went a funeral this past Saturday, one of her coworkers past. I didnt ask how but when I saw his picture I now know why. He killed himself. A black man under 45 big and I dont know what. The starch and greasy food killed him, (with the onset of diabetes she later told me).
This coupled with reading a Dr. Weil book got me to thinking of my mortality and how Im trying to be here when im 95, that should be the aim of us all...to live a healthy prosperous life.
Then I thought about our prime minister and his health scare and how he's coping, and im thinking why didnt he bring us along with him and encourage us to eat right to live longer. (it could have had us in his back pockets come election time, but I digress)
so I started up my yoga tape again and drinking more water...that's a start I know I could do better. Lord know I love a sweet every now and then, but like I said I wanna live healthy and prosperous life so in moderation.
What healthy eating habits do you guys have?
Abiskan Moon-Angel 11-16-05, - 04:26 AM like i said before, just eat properly. the diets and quick fixes dont work. eat well and exercise. simple. i will be honest with you, every now and again, i eat loads of sh!t (normally around that time). i'm not big on sweets, but love my carbs! i'm a french fry girl! but otherwise, i have my musli and yogurt every morning. sometimes on w/ends i treat myself to pancakes. but i eat my leafy greens and salads. it also helps when you make your food attractive and tasty. no, really. obvious, but do we do it? yoga is excellent. been falling back on it, but im sure you can attest to ones overall feeling afterwards!
if we take a moment to consciously stop and think about they amount of salt, sugar and fat in something before we eat it, we might change our minds!
WinterGrace 04-20-06, - 11:02 PM I tell you obesity, hypertension and diabetes is killing Bahamians, they are all silent killers. They effect every vital organ of our bodies.

I am guilty, but what can I do. I am not over weight, but I do eat the Bahamian diet. It is what I was brought up on.
Tonight I went to the food store and saw some salmon, now that will cost me to change my diet. I am trying, i am cooking for myself, no or very little salt, absolutely no oil.
Pray tell me what can I do.
islandgyal 04-21-06, - 12:21 PM um, lots of swimming, some yoga, bike wherever i can, no red meat, no processed foods if at all possible, tons of conch salad and scorched conch. love the occasional mac and cheese, peas and rice, but not so much the fried chicken anymore. grilled fish.
and the occasional glass of gold rum and fresh lime serves as an excellent preservative ;).

That was an opportunity missed! It could have been a nation wide program. Good for votes? Likely. Good for the people? Without doubt.
nationbuilder 04-21-06, - 02:24 PM Well yall seriously i am the poster-girl for healthy eating! even doctors look at me funny when i tell them my diet and exercise regimen.:bouncy:
kibbles 04-21-06, - 03:14 PM In January my coworkers challenged me to lose 30 lbs by August $150.00 if successful. :jawdroop:
Boy what I need $150.00.. hell yeah. I went in all gung ho, all organic, salads, whole grain, white meat, olive oil, trans free, no fried, low sodium whatever it took, after a while, 10 lbs lighter and lots of reading later and deciding to more or less forget about the $150 (not totally) I want this to be a lifestyle for me.
HOORAY... until reality struck. Eating healthy is EXPENSIVE. My gosh. Olive oil almost $15 for a good size, organic food $$$$$$, Chicken breast$$$$$$$$, Whole grain bread $$$$$$$, fish $$$$$$$$.
Well needless to say I want to eat healthy but I would be broke. Its depressing Im stuck at being 10 lbs lighter with 20lbs and 3months to go and broke.
Any advice?

The only diet that works it to eat less and exercise more! :bouncy: A person can still get fat on healthy foods when they eat to much.
As for eating healthy it is a strain on the wallet. Most of us can’t afford the grocery bills that can be twice as high. We have to learn to be more creative with the foods we can afford. Boiled and roasted instead of fried is a step in the right direction. Eating less is another. Cutting down on carbohydrates is another - rice, potatoes, etc. We all eat too much anyhow! Far more that we need to keep body and soul together! :)

yoga may be good for you...go running on the beach everyday...eat more vegetables...bake more...grill more...2% milk last a week longer on average...or use soy milk that you can also freeze and last even longer...substitute ground beef with ground turkey...buy your olive oil in Miami from costco...(like everybody else or)...get you kit of fish from off the outisland...

dont forget, only eat 1 carb serving a day .. eat more protein ..
eat more frequent .. 5-8 smaller meals a day opposed to 3 big ones ..
eat a small can of tuna for example as a meal .. no mayo ,, just mustard, line or whatever ..
boiled eggs are your friend.. believe it or not ..
i lost 50 lbs in 3 months eating like this .. (that said I need to do it again!!)
Note. I did cut out all sugar alltogether though .. includes no Ketchup, mayo, anything that contains any form of sugar.
also, i hardly ate veggies when I did that, took alot of Vitamins, like 3 a day Multivitamins, GTF, Vit B 100 Complex, and Vit C .. Food was cheap, the vitamins were not .. Veggies are good, but the ones in the food stores here are not that healthy .. (insectiside sprayed every night inside the stores)
oh yeah, i also exercised .. road a bike every day, that was all. That was in the Us, its hard to do here, but you can buy an exercise bike for under $200 i think .. i got one from the Sports Center on sale ..
