Hey CG, and the rest of you older, wiser more well informed ones on this board. Who were these people? From wikipedia

Vanguard Party, original known as the Vanguard Nationalist and Socialist Party, a socialist political party in the Bahamas. The party was founded in 1971 by a group belonging to the youth organization of Progressive Liberal Party. The party was inspired by the Black Panther Party in the United States.

The Vanguard Party has failed to reach electoral success. In 1977 the party had put up five candidates, but could only muster 55 votes. In 1979 the party contested 18 seats, and won 173 votes. In the period 1979-1985 John T. McCartney was the party president. The party has close relations to the Communist Party of Cuba.

The party publication is The Vanguard.

I never heard of them till now, but "Communist Part of Cuba"?, "Black Panther Party"?

They were a small annoyance on the political scene. As a matter of fact I had forgotten all about them. I don't know if they are still around. Obviously, their ideas did not strike a cord here. Anyone from the Vanguard Party on this site? Perhaps you can give more info than I.

Dr. John T. McCartney teaches at a University in the US, Iowa I think.

The Bahamas only true Socialist Party. I think I still have a copy of their manifesto - the struggle for freedom in the Bahamas - lying around somewhere. Had some good ideas, but socialism was never going to take hold here. Their one legacy - they were the first to get Bahamians to go to Cuba for Medical Care and University.

Dr McCartney wrote the book Black Power Ideologies. The co-leader of the party Lionel Carey is still in Nassau I think.
