This article is essentially incomplete. Quoting the increase in the number of visas issued to Haitians, but simply stating that the number has quadrupled for Chinese obscures the extent of the visa problem. The number of visas for Chinese could have started out at 4 (in 2002) and now stands at 16 (2004 or 2005). This increase is hardly problematic. By reporting the number of visas increased from 120 in 2002 to 2200 in 2004 suggests a large number of visas were issued to the Chinese; but we don’t know for certain. So, we have to infer from the information we’re given.
The information, as presented in the article suggests a link between visitors’ visas and work visas. Perhaps I am incorrect in my assessment, but I don’t confuse for a moment visitor’s visa with work visa.
If we are asked to believe that there is a scandal about the issuance of visitors’ visas then I have two questions: (1) Are we not a tourist destinations? (2) The Haitian and Chinese tourists spend money when they visit, do they not?
Finally, I would like to know why anyone connected with the government may have to apply for a visitor’s visa for a foreign national. There is a perception of impropriety by those applying on behalf of the foreign nationals. However, I am unclear as to whether this is a true scandal needing us to spend precious resources on another inquiry.
Such a story wrapped in the guise of a scandal plays into our prejudice against the Haitians and Chinese. We should read these articles more closely.
that's crap and you know
102 in 2002 to 2200 in 2004 is something wrong with that picture
read deep into that

it has to be more than coincidental why our loose butt minister has himself in a pickle. When people say comments like this it makes you wonder do they want the Bahamas to be better Bahamians or illegitimate immigrants?
The underclass that is developing is mainly Haitian based, a new group emerging that will eventually run this country.
no matter when this was written, (I think he was a private citizen at the time) this is his opinion and we all know that old people dont change their views on much. Given his arrogance, I woudn't be surprised.
How can anyone make such pernicious statements and call yourself a Bahamian!
Any right thinking Bahamian should be incensed and insulted by this remark.

All this Visa scenario proves is that it is the politicians who are trafficing the Illegal Immigrant!
All this time we thought the Haitians were coming into our country undetected on their own accord. NOW we know better! Dese people should be guilty of treason. They selling out our country with us looking at them...and what will happen to this all boys club? Absolutely nothing. Not a damn thing! Business is usual.
Think about this for a moment. The bahamas spends thousands of dollars to feed, house and eventually ship Haitiens immigrants back to their country of origin. And on the other hand equal amount of haitians come through the Ministry of foreign Affairs and is eventually lost in the system. What in the world Fred and his 'Happy' friends(Trevor and Sydney) are doing. This is a serious issue. The Prime Minister just came from CHOGM in Malta. while there he told that body that we 'need help' because the bahamas is being overrun by haitians, and his minister who is on that same trip was letting in thousand of the same people into the country. Go figure. Are our Prime Minister serious?

you know one thing about his trip to malta he should have had a conference or held somekind of PR stunt before he left saying " My fellow Bahamians im going on this trip to talk about illegal immigration plagueing our country we need your help to rid ourselves of this situation....these are the IOM findings...we have a big issue...when I come back we have to help each other take care of this Bahamian problem...." that would have mobilized us and rejuvenated belief in the people really doing something on their "Plan"
But he didnt do that...he just went and then came back...we had to read it in the paper or on the news. Its like he doesnt care about our opinion...why didnt he ask us? This is one of the reasons why he has to go.

I am not one to get-up into someone elses business "politics" but I feel I have a vested intrest on this subject.I am a part time resident in Hopetown, and I have a Bahamian Fiance with four wonderful girls.I am sadly watching an entire culture disappearing. The true treasure of the Bahamas is the Bahamian. In all my world travels I have never met a more friendly, kind and decent people than Bahamians.Hopetown and Abaco are in danger of becoming lost as part of the Bahamas culturally. It is a sad thing to watch people become the minority in their own country,to hear Creole more than Bahamian,to watch women and young girls being stared down by rude young men. Most of my female Bahamian friends in Hopetown tell me they are uncomfortable going out at night because of the boldness of these young Haitian men.I understand the plight of the Haitian people but the Bahamas is too small and poor to absorb so many. They need to clean up their own country or direct their efforts to immigrate elsewhere.

more so, because we are very much smaller than they are. They can handle an uprising, can we?
