Are you for or against a "National Honours Programme"?
1) Why or why not?
2) Would it be as prestigious as the Queens Honours?
3) Is the Bahamas to young a nation to establish the system?
4) Is it long overdue?
Let us know; we want to hear...
Are you for or against a "National Honours Programme"?
For!
1) Why or why not?
Because every country needs to honour its own.
2) Would it be as prestigious as the Queens Honours?
No, but that is not the point.
3) Is the Bahamas to young a nation to establish the system?
No.
4) Is it long overdue?
L-O-N-G! A program should have been put in place the day after Independence.

I am in favour of a National Honours Programme, and I agree that it should have been put in place since Independence.
This would give us role models, persons of our own country we can look up to and emulate, which would be especially good for children and youths. Could well eliminate some of the present antisocial behaviour.
Maybe those British honours should be scrapped -- as time goes by, at least to me, they seem less and less desirable and not conducive to our sense of independence!

Any honour awarded is good in some way. Your kid gets a ribbon for swimming, a trophy for softball, etc. It instills a sense of pride in oneself that is tangible to others too, like it's evidence. Just because the Queen doesn't give you a ribbon for the 100m relay doesn't make it any less valuable to the recipient.
I do think that the National Honours criteria should be more select, though. The real creme de la creme, for Bahamians by Bahamians. But that's just me talkin'

I am totally for a Bahamian Honor Programme and I do think it is long overdue. I hear so many tales about that famous night in 1973 when the Bahamian flag was hoisted high in the air, I heard some people had tears in their eyes, proud of what they have struggled to achieve finally becoming a reality. You ask why. I would ask why not? Why should we continue to vie and feel proud of an award bestowed upon us by our former oppressors. Isn't that why we wanted to be independent in the first place? Wasn't the idea to remove the oppression hanging over our heads and be truly free? Why should we feel so honoured to essentially receive a pat on the head from our former master saying, "Good boy (or girl)!" If we are old enough to declare ourself independent, we should be old enough to have our own award. The award may not mean as much to the rest of the world, but to me as a Bahamian, it would be priceless. I would call it a great live achievement to know that my people have decided I have contributed so much to my nation that I deserve to be honoured.

WELL, I hear Fr. Sebastian Campbell shouting from his glourious pulpit, ZNS all the time about his so called Bahamian National Honours. As one who is intuned to regional issue, even the awards that Fr. Campbell talk about will not be BAHAMIAN. His talking points that he uses to promote them are all from another country.
SO DUE TO THIS I suggest we hold on to what we have untill we can come up with something uniquely Bahamian. Designed by and for Bahamians.
Until then they will not be appreciated as much at all.

So you are saying because the awards will be modeled after another country it is not really Bahamian? For those of us not in the country can you tell us what these talking points are.
